DAWN MCCARTHY & BONNIE ‘PRINCE’ BILLY REVEAL VIDEO FOR 'OMAHA'

Dawn McCarthy and Bonnie "Prince" Billy | 07/06/13

Image: Omaha

From the back pages of the acclaimed What The Brothers Sang album to the steamy shores of Malta comes the video for ‘Omaha’, directed by media artist, curator and filmmaker Ben Russell, in his first outing ever as a video director. Shoulder to shoulder, with only an ocean between them, Dawn McCarthy and Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy sing of and through the veil of time as the clock runs forward and back, and man returns to the water at the resigned finish.

Watch the video for ‘Omaha’ below.

The creepy streets and discotheques of Italy along with the peaked hoods and robes make you think that some little dwarf is gonna jump out and stick Bonny, Donald Sutherland-style, but he lives to love another day, thank Job!

Ben Russell acquits himself nicely and employs some of his vaunted experimental techniques that have made his an international art house name. Drinking game - take one every time you see the Senator from Gladiator in the video. OR - take a drink every time you see Dawn and Bonnie play this song live this summer.

What the Brothers Sang is available on CD (WIGCD300), vinyl (WIGLP300) and digitally (WIG300D).

The new single, ‘Somebody Help Me’ will be released on July 1st digitally.

SEBADOH RELEASE SECRET EP

Sebadoh | 05/06/13

Image: sebadoh news photo

Legendary indie rock pioneers Sebadoh have announced the release of their first new LP in 14 years.

Sebadoh, the longtime project of Lou Barlow, Jason Loewenstein, and Bob D'Amico, will re-emerge with the full-length album ‘Defend Yourself’ on Domino on September 16th 2013. ‘Defend Yourself’ will be the first self-recorded Sebadoh album since 1994’s ‘Bakesale’.

Effective immediately, the band has released a precursor to this LP, known as the Secret EP.

Secret EP is just that: an EP released in secret. The band quietly posted these 5 tracks on their Bandcamp page some months ago, disseminating the new material to the initiated without performing any of the standard rituals of promotion or distribution -until now.

Domino is giving the Secret EP a proper release, available immediately on digital, with a 10" vinyl in stores from next week.

The tracklisting for the Secret EP is as follows:

1. Keep The Boy Alive

2. My Drugs

3. Arbitrary High

4. I Don't Mind

5. All Kinds

You can buy the Secret EP HERE.

AUSTRA SHARE NEW OLYMPIA SINGLE 'PAINFUL LIKE'

30/05/13

Image: Austra photo

We're happy to share the new single 'Painful Like' from Austra's soon-to-be released album Olympia out June 17 (June 18 in the US).

Influenced by early Chicago house music when dance music was performed with a live band, "Painful Like" too was performed live in the studio free of any programming or loops. While the lyrics may deal with the disillusionment of growing up gay in a small town and finding solace in the arms of a lover, it's bubbly and buoyant and reflects that Olympia is fundamentally a dance record.

Principal songwriter/vocalist Katie Stelmanis says that was the band's aim all along. “We are really into dense harmonies and big beautiful melodies, but I also love techno and dance music. I wanted to bring those elements together.” Founding Detroit techno producer Kevin Saunderson recently remixed lead single “Home “ and it will appear on a forthcoming “Home” remixes 12" backed with a remix from Ital.

Olympia is available to pre-order now via the Domino Mart on CD, limited edition double colored vinyl, standard double vinyl. All pre-orders through Domino will receive an instant mp3 download of the Home single and the six track Austra + Gina X ‘Mayan Drums’ 12” collaboration released earlier this year for Record Store Day.

Austra have sold out release week shows in New York, London, Paris, and Berlin have announced new headlining shows in those cities.

JULIA HOLTER ANNOUNCES NEW ALBUM 'LOUD CITY SONG,' WATCH 'WORLD' VIDEO

22/05/13

Image: Julia Holter photo by Rick Bahto

We're happy to announce the forthcoming release of Loud City Song, the new studio recording by Los Angeles based artist Julia Holter, set for release on August 19th, 2013. The album is Holter’s third full length release in as many years – following 2011’s groundbreaking debut Tragedy and last year’s follow-up, the critically lauded Ekstasis.

Her first studio album proper, Loud City Song is both a continuation and a furthering of the fiercely singular and focused vision displayed by its predecessors, taking as it does Holter’s rare gift for merging high concept, compositional prowess and experimentation with pop sensibility and applying it to a set of even more daringly beautiful arrangements and emotionally resonant songs.

The songs that make up Loud City Song have origins that pre-date 2011’s debut Tragedy – coaxed out and finessed as demos in Holter’s bedroom studio and then finally coalesced into one thrillingly cohesive experience in the latter stages of 2012 by Holter and co-producer Cole Marsden Greif-Neill and an ensemble of Los Angeles musicians. The result is an album of enormous ambition – Holter taking inspiration from Collette’s 1944 novella Gigi and using it as a prism through which to explore her relationship with her hometown of Los Angeles and modern life universally, taking cues from the work of Joni Mitchell and the poetry of Frank O’Hara but forging those touch-points into something resolutely unique.

ABOUT GROUP - 'ALL IS NOT LOST'

About Group | 21/05/13

Image: About Group vid

All Is Not Lost will be released as the first single from About Group’s forthcoming third album on June 24th 2013. The album, Between The Walls, will be available on July 1st.

All Is Not Lost is a classic heartbreak ballad; hinting at a more modern r'n'b mode of writing, the strange but wonderful airlessness of such productions is replaced here with the electricity and liveliness of a straight to tape recording session, capturing the band in performance.

The accompanying video was directed by Swedish artist, Henrik Håkansson:

‘This film is a collage of projects that have recently been exhibited as single works, where bits and pieces are psyched together to create a visionary and open reading to words and music. The visions of my work use reflections of or by fragments in our surrounding environment, mirroring a personal statement on the state of our natural world today. In the end it is a shared vision of gain and loss.’ Watch it HERE.

About Group: All Is Not Lost on Nowness.com

About Group can also announce an album launch show at the Dalston Victoria in London, on July 4th. Purchase tickets HERE.

Between The Walls captures the sound of a band 'playing' together, in both senses of the word - experimenting and trying things, being playful, as much as being a group performing as a unit together. Between The Walls is the sound of people pushing towards and pulling against one another simultaneously. It is the sound of buzzing amplifiers, sudden musical non-sequiturs, loud blasts of straight synth lines cutting through melody and structure. And it is also the sound of beautiful and odd electronic textures and brilliantly defined and deliberate drums, underpinning fragile but deliberate performances of sad songs and country ballads.

Between The Walls will be available on CD (WIGCD292), LP (WIGLP292), DL (WIG292D) and on special edition 2 x CD, featuring a bonus disc with DJ loops, available through Dom mart and indie stores only. Pre-order the album HERE. Download album track, Walk On By, HERE.
