Bonnie Prince Billy | 21/01/15

Image: Bonnie Blindlessness

Bonnie 'Prince' Billy continues his endless march to the Singer's Grave with a third single from last fall's classic career highlight, Singer's Grave a Sea of Tongues, in which the same material that had been gathered to build 2011's Wolfroy Goes To Town was used, in a different time and under different circumstances, to make a different record, allowing the songs to impact in new ways upon the singers and the players - and, in time, our listening ears and restless minds.

The personal b-side to Mindlessness, aptly titled ‘Blindlessness’, features hallucinatory imagery, provided by Kyle Armstrong (Armstrong's 2012 short film MAGNETIC RECONNECTION was narrated by Will Oldham and scored by our comrade Jim O'Rourke). The visuals elevate Bonny’s brooding introspection to a new height as the cascades of light and colour illuminate brightly against the backdrop of succouring harmonies. Bonnie is seen blindfolded, safe and detached from his surroundings, yearning for a new reality. The steady and determined strums of his guitar echo as Bonnie sings, "Why can't I take what I have seen and get far away from here." His articulation is poignant and invites us all on an enduring journey of reflection, as vivid images blaze in the background.

If this video for ‘Blindlessness’ doesn't kill you, nothing will! And so the good news is ours - we won't have to live forever - just long enough to check out the new Bonnie 'Prince' Billy single. Watch below!

Fránçois & the Atlas Mountains | 15/01/15

Image: Francois1

In the summer of 2013, Francois & The Atlas Mountains took a 10 day trip to Africa to tour and meet up with local musicians, with the intention of collaborating. Francois’ existing obsession with African music led to this excursion and what emerged became L’homme Tranquille, a four-track EP recorded across Ethopia, Burkina Faso, Senegal and Benin.

In Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, Francois jammed with Papa Djiga Boubacar (on ngoni), Luc Kyenbreogo (bass ngoni) and Sanou Darra (balaphon) at the French Cultural Center, building on some simple compositions Francois had already prepared. ). Born from a jam built on some simple compositions Francois had already prepared, the track is about a European traveller dreaming about an African journey. This quickly developed into ‘Ayan Filé’, the EP’s opening track.

The EP will be launched via Le Monde on Tuesday January 20th, combined with the launch on January 19th of its new African channel. L’homme Tranquille will be available to download on January 20th and on 12” vinyl on February 2nd.

Until then, we invite you to discover Ayan Filé:

"’Ayan Filé came from a spontaneous jam. I started singing words about feeling spaced out as a European traveller landing in Africa. To which Sanou joined in by singing a line from a traditional Burkinabé tune that said ‘Look at us, we're arriving, pay attention to us’.

“We had a soundcard and a few microphones with us. We plugged them in to the computer and recorded all the instruments live. Because these musicians are so skilled and inventive we only did 2 or 3 takes for each songs.”

-       Francois Marry

Francois & The Atlas Mountains will be performing alongside Djiga Boubacar and Sanou Darra, who collaborated with them on the EP on the following dates:

29th: LEEDS, Howard Assembly Room (w/ Songhoy Blues support) TICKETS

30th: GLASGOW, The Arches (Celtic Connection) TICKETS

From Scotland With Love, which featured in The Sunday Times, Loud & Quiet and MOJO’s year-end lists and which critics described as ‘a lovingly crafted thing’ (Independent on Sunday) and ‘consistently superb’ (Loud & Quiet – 9/10), was created in collaboration with director Virginia Heath and Producer Grant Keir as an audio-accompaniment to a poetic documentary film of the same name. Featuring archive footage from the National Library of Scotland Scottish Screen Archive, but no narration or interview, the film works around themes of love and loss, war, resistance, emigration, work and play, and is driven as much by the music as it is the images. For the first time King Creosote found himself being able to write from other people’s perspectives. The result is From Scotland With Love, one of King Creosote’s most widescreen cinematic and finest pieces of work to date. From Scotland With Love is available now through Dom Mart, and iTunes, with an extended version available HERE.

The Bohicas | 12/01/15

Image: Bohicas To Die For

Poised for a major breakthrough in 2015, The Bohicas preview their upcoming debut album with the release of the new single ‘To Die For’ which impacts on March 2nd. The single builds upon the interest that was provoked by last year’s XXX’ and ‘Swarm’, two kraut-engined, lazer-guided garage rock missiles which introduced the band as a formidable new force of both brain and brawn.

Produced by Mark Rankin (Queens of the Stone Age, Bombay Bicycle Club), Chris Merrick Hughes (Tears For Fears, Adam And The Ants) and Oli Bayston (Toy, Boxed In), ‘To Die For’ continues to snap up disparate elements from the history of guitar music and forge them into something urgent and re-energised.

Currently completing their ‘Swarm Over Essexxx’ tour of their homeland, The Bohicas will next headline BBC Introducing at Club NME at London’s Koko on January 16th before they support Drenge at the Dome in Tufnell Park on February 12th as part of this year’s NME Awards shows.

Frontman Dominic McGuinness isn’t big on labelling their approach within the confines of genre. “You know when you go to see a great film at the cinema and come out of it feeling like you're the lead character, walking down the street like the Fonz or De Niro?” he questions. “I want people listening to our band to feel like that"

“People ask what sort of music we make, but if I say rock ‘n’ roll they instantly think of the fifties,” adds guitarist Dominic John. It’s the same starting point in terms of the energy behind it, but it’s not referential and it’s really not about looking back. It’s seeing that danger and energy, but taking it somewhere else.

Matthew E. White | 12/01/15

Image: Matthew E White Fresh Blood

Bandleader and soul visionary Matthew E. White has unveiled 'Rock & Roll Is Cold', the first full single from Fresh Blood, his new album for Domino that's released on 9 March 2015.

Despite White declaring that "everyone knows rock and roll is cold" in the first verse, 'Rock & Roll Is Cold' is actually the opposite, an effortlessly cool celebration of a song with a highly addictive piano melody and a slinky R&B groove. Sounding brighter and bolder than Big Inner with some serious pop chops in tow, it's unmistakably a Matthew E. White track - full of character and confidence as well as those pristine horn arrangements we've come to love.

"Rock & Roll Is Cold is about how we continue to take the most vibrant, soulful, deep music and make it a caricature of itself. We look into it, force it to turn in on itself, force it to turn back on itself, and we lose the source, we lose the mystery, the magic, and we seem to be unaware that any of that is even happening.“ – Matthew E. White

What's more, White's special solo show at St. Luke's on 10 March 2015 sold out mere hours after Fresh Blood's announcement. Full band shows for April 2015 detailed below.

Fresh Blood will be available on CD (WIGCD309), Vinyl (WIGLP309) and via digital download (WIG309D). Image: Clinic

We are pleased to announce that Clinic will be headlining our Domino night at The Half Moon Putney as part of a weeklong celebration of Independent Venue Week on January 31st 2015.

Following a hugely successful first year, Independent Venue Week is back in 2015 with a seven day long series of gigs running from 26th January – 1st February 2015. Domino returns for a second round at the Half Moon Putney following last year’s storming night of rock and roll with Archie Bronson Outfit and The Amazing Snakeheads.

It’s been fifteen years since the release of Clinic’s irrepressible debut EP and in that time they have essentially delivered an exquisite masterclass in fearless singularity. Their junkshop-trawling analogue fetishism and warm, smoky instrumentation give their songs such a vividly placeable sense of mood and atmosphere.  A band that never stray into the realm of the obvious or complacent; they truly represent the spirit of Independence.

Keep watching the skies for a new transmission from planet Clinic.

In the meantime, here’s the video for ‘Miss You’, taken from their last album Free Reign HERE.

Support to be announced soon. Tickets are £10 in advance and £12 on the door and available HERE.

Doors at 7:30 and DJs until 1am. Over 18s only.
