Prior to the release of their new album Why Make Sense? on 18th May, Hot Chip have announced details of their latest single in Need You Now. Watch the video for the single - directed by Shynola - below.
“We share a lot of the same references and attitudes - there’s a definite aesthetic affinity,” say Shynola of Hot Chip. “The idea for the video wholly came from our reaction to the song. What was intended to be a piece of thrifty filmmaking ended up being a mind-melting shoot - if you can imagine shooting multiple versions of reality, but completely out of chronology, plus in the pissing rain and wind.”
Why Make Sense? was recorded in Oxfordshire and London and produced by Hot Chip with Mark Ralph. The album will be available on all standard formats as well as a Special Edition available for a limited time only, featuring a bonus Separate EP with 4 new tracks recorded during the album sessions. Due to a unique and bespoke printing technique which has never been used before, the new album Why Make Sense? will come in one of 501 different colours making every cover unique. The seed of FFS was sown around the time of Franz’s debut album when word got back to the Maels that the band were big Sparks fans. “We thought ‘Take Me Out’ was very cool, and wouldn’t it be nice to say hello when they came to Los Angeles?” recalls Russell Mael. “We met and decided then it would be great to do something together. We put forward a couple demos, one was ‘Piss Off’. But they got swept up by everything, and it didn’t happen at that time.”
Fast-forward to 2013 when both Sparks and Franz Ferdinand appeared at Coachella. On the day of Sparks’ warm-up show in San Francisco, Kapranos was in the city trying to locate a dentist when he heard a voice behind him: “’Alex, is that you?’ It was Ron and Russell. They invited us down to see them play that night. We said hello after, and everyone agreed that the 10-year gestation period for this idea was long enough------- we should try and make it happen now.”
FFS was recorded during an intense 15-day period in late 2014. “We approached it the way bands do with their first record,” says Kapranos. “We had the songs first, rehearsed them and then recorded it all together, in a room. So no hanging around or fannying about.”
Very much a ‘new’ project, FFS doesn’t truly sound like either band, but a striking and fascinating mutation. “The real motivation was to make something new, not ‘Franz featuring Russell Mael’, or ‘Sparks with Franz Ferdinand backing them,” says Alex Kapranos.
“You can’t chart what is Sparks and what is Franz Ferdinand,” suggests Ron Mael. “I think each band unconsciously relinquished a little of who they were in order to enter new territory.”
FFS also play a handful of UK dates on their European tour this summer, including an appearance at this year’s Edinburgh International Festival.
We are pleased to announce that Sam Dust AKA LA PRIEST will be playing live in the UK and Europe in the coming months. LA PRIEST (pronounced ‘Lah Pree-st’) is a project from reclusive electronic musician Sam Dust. Having previously used the moniker for a 12" release on Erol Alkan's Phantasy label in 2007, ‘Oino’, Dust's new single, is the first material to surface from the artist since the hiatus of Late Of The Pier, his previous band, in 2009.
Sam spent much of his time after 2010 in Greenland, studying the effects of the Ivittuut region's electro-magnetic phenomena on recorded sound, and producing more than five secret uncredited projects - some of which have already trickled out into the world to public acclaim.
Evoking the disruptive pop spirit of musicians like David Byrne, Prince, Arthur Russell or Aphex Twin, Dust's revived LA PRIEST project once again sets him apart as a true outlying original. ‘Oino’ marks the beginning of this long over-due re-emergence and is just a glimpse of the gloriously alluring hole in the fabric of the universe he's torn for himself.
The video for ‘Oino’ was shot by Dust’s brother, director Isaac Eastgate, during the pair’s travels recently and was “inspired by a story our grandad told us about a man imprisoned in the desert who escapes by singing to a wizard”, according to the artist. Watch it below.
Following its worldwide premiere on Radio 1, we are pleased to announce the first release from Domino’s latest signing - multi-instrumentalist, producer and songwriter, Georgia.
Built on a truly monstrous rhythm section, ‘Move Systems’ (released as a single on 25th May 2015),is a frenetic, forceful and hugely imaginative track – offering as much cerebral charm as it does pure physical impact in the way it channels elements of early 00’s grime, dub, post-punk and hip hop into a genuinely new-sounding, globally minded brand of pop. The accompanying video, directed by Rollo Jackson (Hot Chip, Angel Haze, Danny Brown), is available to view now below.
Born and raised in north west London, the last few years have seen Georgia steadily establish herself as an important fixture in the city's most singular and imaginative artistic circles, playing drums for Kwes and Kate Tempest among others before emerging as an irresistible creative force in her own right with last year's Come In EP.
Newly signed to Domino, Georgia is currently putting the final touches to her debut album which she entirely wrote, performed and self-produced - details of which will be announced soon.
Georgia will be performing live at this year’s The Great Escape in Brighton on May 15th, and as a special guest of Kelela at XOYO onMay 26th. Further dates are to be announced.

Following a launch with The Fader, you can now listen to Patrick Watson’s ‘Places You Will Go’, the latest track to be taken from Love Songs for Robots, his highly anticipated fifth record which will be released on May 11th.
Love Songs For Robots is the follow-up to 2012’s Adventures In Your Own Backyard, which received widespread critical acclaim— Consequence of Sound calls it “Larger than life,” while Q Magazine hails “Sublime,” and Uncut adds “Confidently ambitious.”
The new music was recorded at Capitol Studios in Los Angeles and Pierre Marchand Studio in Montreal. Of the record, some of which was debuted at private concerts in small loft spaces, Watson explains:
“I wanted to make a science fiction R’n’ B meets Vangelis erotica with a zest of folk kind of record.” It was only halfway through writing the record when the artist found himself having, by his own submission, “a bad year” did more personal themes begin to creep in.
“I started thinking about how emotional reactions were more mechanical than we think and the only thing left between us and artificial intelligence is the act of inspiration. Just food for thought.”
Now approaching a decade as a band, it has been a truly interesting journey for Patrick Watson. While the man shines when composing over 15 scores for both film and television, Patrick Watson, Robbie Kuster (drums/percussions), Mishka Stein (bass) and most recently Joe Grass (guitars) accomplished such feats as playing to over 100,000 people at the 2009 Montreal Jazz Festival, receiving Canada’s elite Polaris Music Prize in 2007, performing in front of a full orchestra in 2011 in Amsterdam and again in their hometown of Montreal in 2013, and most recently performing two songs in Wim Wenders’s current 3D epic “Every Thing Will Be Fine”.
Patrick Watson will be on tour in May, including a date at London’s Bush Hall on May 11th. Full dates below:
Love Songs For Robots is available for pre-order on iTunes with an instant download of the title track. The vinyl edition comes with an additional 7”, featuring a non-album track, and can be preordered along with the CD on the Domino Mart.
