The Bohicas | 26/05/15

Image: The Making Of

Quickly building a stellar reputation on the back of a series of singles introducing their ludicrously melodic, snarling guitar pop, The Bohicas release their eagerly anticipated debut album ‘The Making Of’ on August 21st on Domino.  Watch the band in action in the trailer for Pulse Films’ director duo thirtytwo’s (Blur’s ‘No Distance Left To Run, LCD Soundsystem’s ‘Shut Up And Play The Hits’) tour documentary from the ‘Swarm Over Essexxx’ tour below.

‘The Making Of’ lands blow after blow. Featuring early singles XXX and Swarm, alongside Radio 1 playlisted To Die For and Where You At, the album is two barrels' worth of electrifying tunes and crackling 21st Century rock and roll.

The Bohicas are rock and roll painted in vivid primary colours. Hi def, loud, fast, shiny and above all fun. A barrage of killer hooks, razor blade riffs and choruses that slap you in the face, grab your hand and lead you onto the dance floor. All shot through with pulp imagery torn from the pages of a graphic novel.

‘The Making Of’ was produced by Mark Rankin (Queens Of The Stone Age, Bombay Bicycle Club), Chris ‘Merrick’ Hughes (Tears For Fears, Adam And The Ants) and Oli Bayston (Toy, Boxed In).

The Bohicas are Dominic McGuinness, drummer Brendan Heaney, guitarist Dominic John and bassist Adrian AcolatseThe Bohicas’ story began in Essex where, as schoolmates, McGuinness, Heaney and John first came together over a love of The Beatles, The Kinks, Ray Charles and the new wave of guitar bands who emerged at the start of the century after the scrag ends of Britpop had finally limped off.

‘The Making Of’ will be available on CD, vinyl and digitally. In addition, the album will also be released in two special formats - the Deluxe Edition will feature a bonus 7” single featuring In The Mood and Rewind Replay, and will be available from Domino Mart and select indies. The same two tracks will also feature on the iTunes Bonus Track Edition.

The album’s artwork was created by illustrator Tomer Hanuka. “The immediacy and impact of Tomer's style marries perfectly to how we want our music to sound,” explains McGuinness. “The subject of most of the songs is a boy longing for a girl. We thought the cover should be inviting and dangerous so we asked Tomer to draw someone who is about to fuck off into the future and this is your chance to join her.”

‘The Making Of’ tracklisting:

Owen Pallett | 28/05/15

Image: owen pallett the passions

Today OWEN PALLETT debuts a brand new video clip from his critically acclaimed In Conflict album. Director Brian Vu said the following about the video, which was premiered via i-D, ‘The Passions was filmed by my friends and I in familiar places. It’s an abstraction of the various stages of love shot within a video portrait style.’

Pallett said the following about the track: ‘I wrote “The Passions” after a period during which my definitions of “love” were being redefined.  Queers are united by our desires, by our prioritization of the needs of our bodies and souls over the needs of tradition and societal structures.  But I feel there is more to it than that.  Our lovers are our family, our brothers and sisters as well as our sexual partners.  “The Passions” is about the blurry distinction between these definitions.’

Following dates in Europe, Owen Pallett arrives in the UK later this week for 4 live dates culminating in a performance at Field Day Festival on London on Saturday June 6th. Pallett will also be appearing at this year’s Sonar and Green Man Festivals. Full live dates are below, with UK dates in bold. Tickets are available here.

In Conflict is full of love songs— more specifically, songs about liminal states and our loved ones locked in battle with them.  “The record is meant to approach ‘insanity’ in a positive way,” Owen says— emphasis on the ironizing scare quotes around singular notions of insanity.  “Depression, addiction, gender trouble, and the creative state are presented as positive, loveable, empathetic ways of being.  Not preferable, per se, but all as equal, valid positions that we experience, which make us human.”  Watch the album trailer for In Conflictfeaturing illuminating liner notes in an alpine landscape, HERE.

In Conflict is available on CD, digitally, standard edition LP, and on limited edition double LP (with 3 bonus tracks), through Dom Mart. You may order the album HERE.

Patrick Watson | 27/05/15

Image: Patrick Watson Love Songs For Robots

Acclaimed Canadian artist Patrick Watson confirms new U.S. and European fall tour dates in support of his new album Love Songs for Robots (out now via Domino Records). The tour will now run through December, concluding with dates in New York City (at Irving Plaza) and Philadelphia (Under Ground Arts). The first of his US Love Songs For Robots dates is tonight, at the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC.

In celebration of the commencement of the US tour, Patrick Watson is pleased to share a video for “Hearts”, recorded at a secret album release show in Montreal recently. Watch the video below.

In addition, KCRW yesterday featured previous single “Places You Will Go” as “Today’s Top Tune”—a preview to Watson’s upcoming appearance on KCRW’s “Morning Becomes Eclectic” on June 5.

Love Songs for Robots continues to receive widespread critical acclaim:

“Expansive and intricate…”—NPR Music

“Passionate…as nearly hallucinatory as it is pleasing to the ears.”—The FADER

“Otherworldly…Simply put, Love Songs for Robots is gorgeous.”—Boston Globe

“Watson’s voice exists in that airy, impossible realm that seems
more spiritual than physical in form.”—Stereogum

“Watson has outdone himself.”—Paste

The music was recorded at Capitol Studios in Los Angeles and Pierre Marchand Studio in Montreal. Of the record, some of which debuted at private concerts in small loft spaces, Watson explains, “I wanted to make a science fiction R n’ B meets Vangelis erotica with a zest of folk kind of record.” It was only halfway through writing the record when the artist found himself having, by his own submission, “a bad year” did more personal themes begin to creep in. “I started thinking about how emotional reactions were more mechanical than we think and the only thing left between us and artificial intelligence is the act of inspiration. Just food for thought.” Watch the official video for “Places You Will Gohere.

Watson composes, performs and records his albums with his full band of almost a decade, which includes Joe Grass (guitars), Robbie Kuster (drums/percussion) and Mishka Stein (bass). The recipient of Canada’s elite Polaris Music Prize in 2007, Watson and his band have performed to over 100,000 people at the 2009 Montreal Jazz Festival as well as with full orchestras in Amsterdam and Montreal. Raised and still living in Montreal, Watson himself has composed 15 scores for both film and television, including a trailer for “The Walking Dead” and Wim Wenders’ new 3D film “Everything Will Be Fine”, where he performed the songs “Cynical World” (an original for the film) and “Lighthouse.”

Love Songs For Robots is available on iTunes. The vinyl edition comes with an additional 7”, featuring a non-album track, and can be along with the CD on the Domino Mart.

Ducktails | 21/05/15

Image: Ducktails press photo by Rob Kulisek

Ducktails, a.k.a. Matt Mondanile, is pleased to today share the video for new single “Headbanging In The Mirror”. Directed by Rose Schlossberg, the video was shot in and around Los Angeles, Mondanile’s recently adopted habitué.  The clip visually encapsulates the graceful wistfulness of the song as he ventures across the landscapes of southern California in solitude.

The recently announced new album, St. Catherine, Matt Mondanile’s fifth outing as Ducktails, will be released worldwide on July 24th. The album emerges from the roots of Mondanile's previous work, from the free-form, ambient bedroom experiments of seminal underground release Landscapes (2009), to 2013's eighties pop re-imagination The Flower Lane, but ultimately moves Ducktails on to a more refined, personal and sincere place.

St. Catherine is a finely-honed collection of baroque pop songs that take the blissful, cascading melodic fretwork that Mondanile has made his signature with both Ducktails and his other band, Real Estate, and applies it to songs of considerable new emotional heft and dynamic range.

St. Catherine will be available on July 24th on CD, digitally, standard edition LP, and on limited edition coloured vinyl LP through Dom Mart. St. Catherine is available through Dom Mart HERE and through iTunes HERE

Villagers | 14/05/15

Image: Everything I Am Villagers

Everything I Am Is Yours will be the next single released from Villagers’ acclaimed new album Darling Arithmetic, with an impact date of 29th June. The accompanying video was directed by Jamie Thraves (Radiohead, Sam Smith, Blur).

Echoing the song’s tender depth, the Everything I Am Is Yours video sees Conor O’Brien as the soundtracking leader of a lovelorn protagonist in search of solace with O’Brien himself becoming emotionally and physically connected to his every move.

Darling Arithmetic is the follow-up to Conor O’Brien’s debut, Becoming a Jackal, and its successor, Awayland - both hugely acclaimed and each nominated for The Mercury Music Prize.  It’s a breathtakingly beautiful, intimate album entirely about love and relationships. Panda Bear has shared a new video for Panda Bear Meets The Grim Reaper track ‘Come To Your Senses’. Watch it below or over at GorillavsBear as Noah Lennox is guest editing the site today. This follows the videos for previous PBVSGR tracks "Mr. Noah," "Boys Latin," and most recently "Tropic of Cancer." Also, listen to the recent remix of "Come To Your Senses" done by PC Music affiliate Danny L Harle below.

Lennox says of the Sam Fleischner-directed video shot in Lisbon where Lennox resides, “Rua da Rosa is the narrow but main street cut through the Bairro Alto neighborhood here in Lisbon. Visitors mainly stock the area during the day but it’s perhaps the principle target for partying Lisbon teenagers Thursday through Sunday nights. The constant shifts make it a particularly fascinating neighbourhood to me. It’s noisy except for Sunday mornings. I’d had an idea for a while to shoot the street for a bit to catch the traffic. When my friend Sam was here shooting a short thing we made for the recent album he was game to give the idea a go.”

Panda Bear is in the US this week for a series of shows and recently announced a three night run at Bowery Ballroom Oct 13-15 as part of this year's CMJ festival. See all the dates below.
