In 2008 James Yorkston released his fourth studio album ‘When The Haar Rolls In’. Returning with his trusty Athletes, along with some legendary English folk names - Norma Waterson, Mike Waterson, Marry Gilhooly and Olly Knight, there is much to mine for Yorkston fans of old and new within ‘When The Haar Rolls In’, all the ambition, beauty and pathos of his previous albums is sweeping through with the soothing, lush arrangements of all sorts: the timpani, clarinets, violins, vibraphone, concertinas, bull bass, prepared pianos, mandolins, bouzoukis, banjos and wine glasses.
Praise for ‘When The Haar Rolls In’:
"Amid sleepy fiddles and brooding harmoniums, these bleary love-drunk dispatches – especially the startling spectre-rattle of Midnight Feast and the swelling autumn mist of The Capture of the Horse – rank among the most breathtaking by anyone this year." ***** Pete Paphides THE TIMES
"The jewel in the crown of the Fence Collective, a close assembly of musicians domiciled in Fife's East Neuk, James Yorkston is a singer-songwriter who, on this evidence at least, must now rank among the best this country has produced." ***** Barry Didcock, THE SUNDAY HERALD
"James Yorkston's homespun song-world remains as enveloping as the titular miasma, which settles on his native Fife coastline. Tender but never maudlin, and positively dripping in melody, this is Yorkston's best work to date.” **** David Sheppard , MOJO Lisa Knapp www.lisaknapp.co.uk www.myspace.com/lisaknappmusic
‘The sexiest folk album of the year’ Word
Lisa Knapp burst on to the alternative folk scene in Spring 2007 with a stunning debut album ‘Wild & Undaunted’ which went on to become Mojo’s folk album of the year and led to two BBC Folk Award nominations for Lisa in early 2008. Released on her own label out of her life-long home of Tooting in South London, the album catapulted her to the heart of both the traditional and nu-folk scenes winning her main stage shows at both Cambridge Folk Festival and The Green Man Festival in summer 2007.Mojo describing her as ‘a major discovery’, Uncut described her as sounding ‘like young Maddy Prior with the girlish inflection of Bjork’. Meanwhile, Radio 1’s champion of experimental music Huw Stephens declared himself to have, ‘fallen in love with her beautiful album’ and featured a live performance by Lisa in his 2007 Christmas special.
Lisa has since gone on to appear at major festivals in the UK and abroad, perform on major collaborations with artists including Shirley Collins, Martin Carthy, Alasdair Roberts, Fairport Convention, Bellowhead and, in late 2007, with James Yorkston, as part of the 'Tribute to Lal Waterson' for the BBC Electric Proms. Lisa's second album is due for release in 2009.
