Porches | 08/10/15

Image: Porches - press shot

Porches is the proliferation of Aaron Maine’s love affair with music. Never quite landing in any particular niche, Maine navigates through genres, learning, obsessing, and absorbing. Great victories and great defeats, cosmic or tangible, are the underlying elements that remain constant through his music.

Today, Maine has released the first song from his anticipated forthcoming album, the first via his new home at Domino. The track, titled “Hour”, streaming below now, features Frankie Cosmos, Maine’s long time musical and life collaborator. Together their voices weave through the layers of synth and keyboards, pulsing at every turn. The song touches on the music Maine is known for, with his previous releases on Double Double Whammy, Exploding In Sound and Terrible Records, but also shows a progression and maturity for an artist who has delivered his strongest work to date.

Porches will be playing CMJ in New York next week including stops at the FADER, Ad Hoc, Brooklyn Vegan and Terrible Records events. Maine and his band will also play at the special invite only Domino showcase on Wednesday October 14th. Porches will then head to Iceland Airwaves festival in November before a London headline show at Moth Club on Monday November 9th.

News on his full length will be announced shortly. Watch this space for more details.

Bill Ryder-Jones | 07/10/15

Image: Bill Ryder-Jones NL.jpg

With the forthcoming release of new album West Kirby County Primary, 6th November on Domino, Bill Ryder-Jones has shared the album’s latest track in ‘Satellites’. Watch the video for ‘Satellites’ below.

The new video, again directed by James Slater following his work on the video for the album’s lead single ‘Two To Birkenhead’ (watch HERE), follows Ryder-Jones at his recent performance at this year’s Green Man Festival.

Satellites stands out as one of the most personal moments of Ryder-Jones musical history to date. Speaking candidly of the song’s origin and sentiment he says, “The song revolves around something my ex-girlfriend said once that helped me in coming to terms with the awful thought I was having. She said 'something somewhere must be happening' - that line refers to the particular thought that life wasn't real for me and that no matter what it is that I felt I was experiencing, the fact that I'm experiencing something means that somewhere there must be something to experience.”

West Kirby County Primary, the third full-length album from multi-instrumentalist, producer and composer, Bill Ryder-Jones, is the follow-up to A Bad Wind Blows In My Heart was written and recorded by Ryder-Jones in his childhood bedroom at his mother’s house in West Kirby before being filtered through Liverpool’s legendary Parr Street Studios. A classic band record, West Kirby County Primary features Bill playing a multitude of instruments including the electric guitar with his trademark prowess

Mixed by James Ford, each of West Kirby County Primary’s ten tracks offers a sneaked glance into his private world; they eavesdrop on a set of encounters that go about “turning stories into beautiful truth” set to glorious molten melody that explodes like fireworks over water. It all adds up to a remarkable record by one of our most cherished musicians – a musical polymath as at ease on stage with the Manchester Camerata (where he performed ‘If…’ as part of the Manchester Literature Festival last Autumn) or on live guitar duties with Arctic Monkeys as he is on production duties with Hooton Tennis Club and The Wytches.

Bill Ryder-Jones will be performing live throughout the UK in November with a date at The Lexington in London on 11th November. He is also performing as a special guest to Spector on their UK October tour. Full dates with ticket links are as follows with headline dates in bold :

The Triffids | 29/09/15

Image: Sandy Born Devotional Deluxe

Available on vinyl for the first time since 1986; ‘Born Sandy Devotional’ by The Triffids! The beautifully remastered LP comes in custom, hand-numbered limited sleeves (250 only). Also includes lyric sheet, printed inner sleeve and download code and pressed onto 180gm heavyweight virgin vinyl.

Remastered following David McCombs’ original production notes (Audiophile Quality), this is the best this record has ever sounded. Below is a bit of insight into the process of the remastering:

When undertaking the re-issue of “Born Sandy Devotional” for vinyl, we thought long and hard about the best way to master it. This was an analogue (solid state) recorded album, tracked to 2” tape and cut from either ½” or ¼” reels. However, when re-mastered for CD back in 2006, the tracks were transferred to digital to allow the use of more modern and sophisticated eqs (parametric eq, limiting etc).
We could have returned to the original cutting tapes, but we were so impressed with the digital audio, captured at 24 bit / 96K resolution, that we felt these files should be used for the LP instead.
It was at this point that we decided to transfer the music back on to ¼” tape to add a little warmth and sparkle to the upper mids and high frequencies. More specifically at Gearbox studios on a Studer C37 – one of the finest tape transports ever built. Yes, it is a valve/tube machine, but it has been serviced to better than factory specifications, and the tiny amounts of “noise” added to the program are far outweighed by the sonic benefits of going back on tape.

Once these cutting tapes were created, the production masters were made by Darrel Scheinman using a fully analogue signal path (see the Gearbox website for more info: - a Scully/Westrex lathe performing the final lacquer cutting duties. One other note here is that the record was cut fixed pitch - it would originally have been done “varigroove”, but the somewhat lost “art” of “fixed pitch” can yield better results if done with care and skill!
The initial test pressings weren’t quite what we were looking for, so after many adjustments, 3 recuts (!) and input from all sides, including the pressing plant, who became interested in the way we were working, test pressings were received which exceeded all expectations.

We hope you enjoy the results. A great record, treated in the way we feel best.

Patrick Watson | 28/09/15

Acclaimed Canadian musician Patrick Watson is debuting a new live video shot entirely with GoPro cameras. The clip was filmed at St-Jean Baptiste Church in Montreal, one of five special orchestra concerts during Watson’s touring cycle for Adventures In Your Own Backyard in 2013, just before he went back into the studio to record his latest album Love Songs For Robots (out now on Domino). Directed by Tyler Johnson at GoPro, the video showcases Watson’s spectacular live show with a 56-piece orchestra, 48-piece choir and his regular 4-piece touring band (nearly 100 people on stage), performing the song “Man Under the Sea” taken from Watson’s 2006 album Close to Paradise

Love Songs For Robots continues to receive widespread critical praise: The new music was recorded at Capitol Studios in Los Angeles and Pierre Marchand Studio in Montreal. Of the record, some of which debuted at private concerts in small loft spaces, Watson explains, “I wanted to make a science fiction R n’ B meets Vangelis erotica with a zest of folk kind of record.” It was only halfway through writing the record when the artist found himself having, by his own admission, “a bad year” that more personal themes begin to creep in. “I started thinking about how emotional reactions were more mechanical than we think and the only thing left between us and artificial intelligence is the act of inspiration. Just food for thought.”

Watson composes, performs and records his albums with his full band of almost a decade, which includes Joe Grass (guitars), Robbie Kuster (drums/percussion) and Mishka Stein (bass). The recipient of Canada’s elite Polaris Music Prize in 2007, Watson and his band have performed to over 100,000 people at the 2009 Montreal Jazz Festival as well as with full orchestras in Amsterdam and Montreal. Raised and still living in Montreal, Watson himself has composed 15 scores for both film and television, including a trailer for “The Walking Dead” and Wim Wenders’ new 3D film “Everything Will Be Fine”, where he performed the songs “Cynical World” (an original for the film) and “Lighthouse.”

Julia Holter | 25/09/15

Image: Julia Holter image - photo credite Tonje Thilesen

Coinciding with today’s worldwide release of the highly anticipated and richly acclaimed new album Have You In My Wilderness, Julia Holter has today shared a brand new live performance film for ‘Betsy On The Roof’ in collaboration with Nowness. Watch the film and read an accompanying interview on Nowness HERE or below.

Directed by Federico Urdaneta and filmed in a picturesquely unique location within London St. Pancras clock tower, the new film sees Holter taking ‘Betsy On The Roof’ to its stark roots in a stunning acoustic performance, amplifying the song’s heart and character in a bright new setting.

Have You in My Wilderness was written from the heart – warm, dark and raw – and explores love, trust, and power in human relationships. While love songs are familiar in pop music, Holter manages to stay fascinatingly oblique and enigmatic, with some of the most sublime and transcendent music she has ever written. Like Holter’s previous albums, Have You in My Wilderness is multi-layered and texturally rich, featuring an array of electronic and acoustic instruments played by an ensemble of gifted Los Angeles musicians.

Have You in My Wilderness is also Holter’s most sonically intimate album, with her vocals front and centre in the mix, lifted out of the layers of smeared, hazy effects. The result is striking: clear and vivid, but disarmingly personal.

Have You In My Wilderness is available on CD (WIGCD341), digital (WIG341D) and LP (WIGLP341). For a very limited period the vinyl LP will come with a photographic print signed by the artist, via Dom Mart only. The album includes the single ‘Feel You’ (watch the video HERE) as well as previously released tracks ‘Sea Calls Me Home’ (watch the video HERE) and ‘Betsy On The Roof’ (listen to the official audio HERE). “The biggest thing ever to happen to indie pop in America... Most of what's written about this band is all about that sweet pop and those childish affectations, but that misses the substance at the core: Their music was dark, damaged, full of fright and sex and death and vulnerability-- just like any real childhood...their hopscotch stories felt punker than Black Flag tattoos ever could.” - Nitsuh Abebe, Pitchfork

Exploding the teenage underground into passionate revolt against the corporate ogre since 1983, Beat Happening formed in Olympia, Washington by Calvin Johnson, Heather Lewis and Bret Lunsford. The band combined a modern primitive pop sound with the D.I.Y. ethos of ‘anyone can do it’ and inspired countless bands and labels along the way. The music community that arose around the band and their label, K, may have seemed the sonic antithesis of their Seattle neighbors (and friends) but was no less influential.

30 years since the release of their self-titled debut album (the subject of a 33 1/3 book out next week), Look Around is a remastered, career-spanning double album anthology, handpicked by the band and a great starting point for the uninitiated as well a refreshing reminder to those who caught the wave the first time around. The 23 tracks range from their 1984 debut single, “Our Secret” b/w “What’s Important” (originally sold directly for $2.50 to individuals, but $4 to institutions) to “Angel Gone,” a single released in 2000 after eight years of inactivity.

Look Around is available on all digital services September 22, while the physical release, out November 20, will comprise the following formats: CD, gatefold double LP, limited-edition royal blue cassette, and a Domino Mart exclusive gatefold double LP bundled with a limited edition light yellow 7” of “Indian Summer” and “Foggy Eyes”. Domino is also planning an extensive Beat Happening album reissue series in 2016.

The oft-covered “Indian Summer” from 1998’s Jamboree LP — which Ben Gibbard once called “the indie ‘Freebird’” and was named one of Pitchfork’s “Best Songs of the 1980s” (“it means something slightly different every time it’s heard”) — is now streaming below.

Calvin Johnson will be returning to London in November for a headlining show at The Tin Tabernacle in Kilburn on Wednesday November 18th and a Rough Trade East Q&A on Wednesday the 25th of November.  More dates to be announced soon.

Beat Happening Look Around

“We are Beat Happening and we don’t do Nirvana covers. They do Beat Happening covers.”*

The legend of Beat Happening, and of K, the label that Calvin Johnson founded, is full of big names they worked with before they were stars (Beck! Modest Mouse! The Gossip!), and big names they influenced (Kurt Cobain! Sleater-Kinney!) Less acknowledged, however, is that Bret Lunsford, Heather Lewis, and Calvin Johnson created some of the most original and surprising music to come out of the often deliberately weird American punk rock tradition.

Working from a sonic template of the Cramps, Trouble Funk, Young Marble Giants, and messianic blues, Beat Happening confounded and often incited violence from audiences weaned on hardcore punk. In the place of macho aggression, Beat Happening confronted the all-ages scene with Heather’s low-key delivery and Calvin’s fey theatrics, topped off by his trademark dance move: rubbing his tummy. For a supposedly cutesy band, Beat Happening was adamant about asserting its right to exist, carrying itself with a punk as fuck attitude that would become a key inspirational lodestone for the generation of D.I.Y. bands that followed, including Bikini Kill and the Nation of Ulysses.

In Calvin’s own words: “This idea that Beat Happening was popular in some way was never true. And in fact, I don’t think people understand the level of animosity that Beat Happening attracted through most of our time performing live. This concept that we were this performing group that were some kind of—I don’t know—shy pop… our performances were clearly confrontational.”**

Fans only familiar with Beat Happening’s self-titled first album of 1985, or just the cat in a rocketship line-drawing on its cover, or the much-covered “Indian Summer” from 1988’s Jamboree, will be surprised at the band’s range and musicality. In the absence of a bass player, the guitar and drums had to carry more character in the songs, and alongside the de rigueur post-punk and indiepop moves, Beat Happening omnivorously shifted from go-go to surf to Shaggs-esque outsider pop to Krautrock. All this was accompanied by a sexual energy thinly veiled behind the band’s nostalgic celebration of childhood. The band’s final album, 1992’s forgotten classic You Turn Me On, was a gorgeous lo-fi dream-pop opus co-produced by bedroom pop legend Stuart Moxham of Young Marble Giants.

Look Around is a chronological survey of Beat Happening’s remarkable arc, from its deliberately amateurish debut, produced by Northwest punk legend Greg Sage of the Wipers, to its fluent and stunning 1992 finale, appended with one stray track: the lovely “Angel Gone,” a one-off single recorded in 2000 with then-K wunderkind Phil Elverum (the Microphones, Mount Eerie) to accompany the band’s now out-of-print career-spanning retrospective box set Crashing Through. At the turn of the millennium, we weren’t quite ready to rediscover Beat Happening. But in our age of omnivorous music consumption enabled by social networking, the story of Beat Happening, the band that helped create an international network of underground pop and then had the gumption to bring everyone to sleepy little Olympia, Washington for 1991’s epochal International Pop Underground Convention, makes a lot of sense.
