BONNIE ‘PRINCE’ BILLY SHARES NEW VIDEO FOR ‘WHEN THY SONG FLOWS THROUGH ME’, NEW ALBUM POND SCUM RELEASED TODAY

22/01/16

Image: Bonnie 'Prince' Billy Pond Scum photo

Pond Scum is an integral piece in the evolution of Bonnie 'Prince' Billy's progressive and prolific catalogue. A collection of sessions recorded for John Peel’s influential BBC show, it spans eight years of Bonnie's career and is essential for longtime fans and first-time listeners alike. Released today, Pond Scum captures Will Oldham’s powerful and compelling songwriting, accompanied only by a single guitar and a few subtle, yet captivating harmonies.

Recorded in 2001, ‘When Thy Song Flows Through Me’ is one of the finest paradigms of Bonnie 'Prince' Billy's illustrious career. Inspired by the devotional chant by Paramahansa Yogananda, the Pond Scum version is every bit as spiritual and moving as the original. To accompany such a poignant adaptation, Bonnie enlisted the help of Louisville based director Ryan Daly to construct moving images that soothe the mind and body. Partly inspirited by the works of Nathaniel Dorsky and Jerome Hiler, the video for ‘When Thy Song Flows Through Me’ is dazzling in its simplicity.

Watch ‘When Thy Song Flows Through Me’ here.

Additionally, Oldham shared another Pond Scum cut via NPR last week, a cover of Prince’s ‘The Cross’. Listen to it here.

Pond Scum is available on CD (WIGCD374), vinyl (WIGLP374) and digitally (WIG374D).  You can purchase Pond Scum via Dom Mart or iTunes.

The Last Shadow Puppets return with their new album ‘Everything You’ve Come To Expect’ on Friday 1st April 2016.  The album finds Alex Turner and Miles Kane reunited with James Ford (production and drums) and Owen Pallett (string arrangements) and joined by Zachary Dawes (Mini Mansions) on bass, recording the follow up to 2008’s ‘The Age Of The Understatement’ at Shangri La Studio in Malibu.

THE RANGE ANNOUNCES NEW ALBUM POTENTIAL RELEASED 25TH MARCH, LISTEN TO "FLORIDA" AND WATCH ALBUM TRAILER

The Range | 20/01/16

Image: The Range photo by Alexandra Gavillet

We're happy to announce the Domino debut Potential from Brooklyn, NY-based musician James Hinton, aka The Range, out March 25, 2016.

The magic of Potential, following 2013’s Nonfiction - is as a document of its time. The Range has made an electronic record inspired by Baltimore club, early ‘00s grime and mid ‘00s electronica, but also as a member of the last generation that will remember going online for the first time. Listen to lead single “Florida” below.

As its backbone, Potential utilizes a series of vocal samples that Hinton found in the deep corners of YouTube, introducing us to unknown artists expressing themselves unfettered by the constraints of industry. He might be fascinated by the code that determines his YouTube searches, but what truly grips him are the human stories behind the samples. Hinton explains, “I found each person by using a small set of search terms on YouTube. Each song is inextricably linked to the point in time that I came across each video. I endeavored to tie the songs of Potential together by telling my own story alongside the stories of the people I sampled. Every song tries to acknowledge a sense of vulnerability or difficulty in life, as well as an intense drive to cope with problems in ways that don't drag you into the abyss.”

In addition to the forthcoming album Potential, a documentary titled Superimpose, directed by Daniel Kaufman, out this spring, will look at the human stories behind the unknown artists included on the album. As Hinton states, “I am very conscious that these people who I have sampled elevate what I do, just as much as my record brings their work somewhere else.” Watch the documentary trailer below.

Potential will be available in CD, LP, deluxe double LP edition, and digital formats. The deluxe double LP edition, pictured above, is available to pre-order exclusively from the Domino Mart and includes a bonus 4 track Strings 12” EP and instant download of “Florida.” It will be limited to 1000 copies worldwide.

The Range will be playing a handful of pre-release shows in March. Dates below, with more extensive touring to be announced soon.

NIGHT MOVES ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM PENNIED DAYS, SHARE VIDEO FOR NEW SINGLE 'DENISE, DON'T WANNA SEE YOU CRY'

Night Moves | 19/01/16

Image: Night Moves - photo credit Bryan Derballa

Minneapolis band Night Moves are pleased to announce their new album, Pennied Days, due for release on March 25, 2016 on Domino. The first single from the forthcoming album, ‘Denise, Don’t Wanna See You Cry’, is released today alongside a music video, directed by Anthony Sylvester (director of Shamir’s ‘In For The Kill’ and ‘On The Regular’ videos) and shot in upstate New York late last year. Watch the video below now.

Formed in 2009 in the Twin Cities, Night Moves is composed at its core of John Pelant and Micky Alfano. Friends since high school, their bond was solidified when Alfano lent Pelant his copy of George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass, a luminous classic of turn-the-page melancholy that echoes through Pennied Days. Over time, Pelant and Alfano broadened their scope to allow for a wide array of maverick influences, ranging from traditionalist heroes like Leon Russell and The Band to r’n’b originators Curtis Mayfield and Sly Stone to pre-punk experimentalists Suicide. (They also love Joe Walsh, like all free-thinking Americans.)

For Pennied Days, Pelant channeled both his disillusionment and his quiet resolve into a set of beautiful, melodic songs whose sunny surface obscures an inner darkness. Pennied Days might ultimately be as breezy and pleasurable as the records Pelant grew up loving, but that description belies the years of work the band put into making the album.

“A lot of the songs are about trying to find yourself and what your future will look like and who you are – life overall,” Pelant says now — a seemingly simple statement about the most complicated of personal journeys. After releasing their 2012 debut, Colored Emotions — and touring with the likes of Father John Misty, Lord Huron, Django Django, and Poliça — Pelant set about recording demos for the follow-up. Originally, he planned on making another record quickly — Pelant is compulsively creative, writing loads of hooky pop songs in short bursts. (The band has few hobbies outside of music, beyond “drinking, wasting time talking about life, girls, and partying.”). But sessions for Pennied Days stretched far longer than anticipated, with the music veering from Flaming Lips-influenced doomsday dirges to the folky, laidback material the band were known for, and so eventually producer John Agnello was introduced to help steer things back on course, resulting in a 9 song collection of future folk-rock, paisley-tinged guitar licks, and even a piano jam or two.

YOUR FRIEND SHARES NEW SINGLE COME BACK FROM IT, DEBUT ALBUM GUMPTION OUT JANUARY 29TH

Your Friend | 14/01/16

Image: Your Friend - photo credit Crystal Lee Ferris

Taryn Miller, aka Your Friend, will release her debut album, Gumption, on January 29th via Domino. The second single from Gumption, “Come Back From It,” debuts today on Noisey with an accompanying video directed by Christophe Acker / Thatfilm and shot at the end of last year in Paris.

Says Miller, “We shot the footage on my last day in Paris, when I was there last November for Red Bull Music Academy, which was postponed following the awful events in November. It was freezing, and wild. He (the motorcycle driver) was weaving between highway traffic and at times, splitting the space between semis. It all came together at the very end of my trip, and was a really lovely way to leave after seeing what so many endured. There was this juxtaposition of the time that I arrived, and the night before I left. The streets were empty on my first day there, and it was exhilarating to be riding back into the city like that, and to have witnessed such resilience during such a dark time.”

“Come Back From It,” was composed of salvaged pieces of an almost entirely scrapped song during Gumption’s demoing process. The whirling, dark, drum loop (arguably the backbone) and the crackling drone were the only original pieces of audio from the demo. Producer Nicolas Vernhes encouraged that there was something about the lurching nature of those elements that was worth pursuing. Miller already had a sense of verses, but there wasn’t a “relief,” as Vernhes said, when referring to a chorus. Vernhes sat her in the control room of Rare Book Room in Brooklyn and played Lou Reed’s “Pale Blue Eyes,” with the both of them in silence, then said, “You have thirty minutes, go write a chorus.” After the structure was formed, Miller took on the task of creating several, separate loops for each chord in the entire song, and Vernhes collaging them and achieving an overall cinematic type of texture.

“Come Back From It” follows the album opener and first single, “Heathering,” a brooding track Miller had been working on long before entering the studio. The opening acoustic guitar sample was something that Vernhes had caught before she knew they were tracking. It was left as somewhat of a playful placeholder initially, but then ultimately became an endearing and important part of the opening.

Gumption deals with the dualities and nuances of human interaction, and questions how much we, as individuals, are responsible for in the ways we are perceived. It’s a record of courage, as its title suggests - of having the willingness to make necessary shifts, and to have a sense of self-awareness that ultimately leads to growth.

---

Gumption will be available on CD and standard LP via the Domino Mart. Pre-order the album from the Domino Mart HERE or iTunes HERE and receive an instant download of “Heathering.” The standard LP comes in a single jacket with a printed inner sleeve and is accompanied by a MP3 download card.

Preorder: Dom Mart / iTunes

PORCHES SHARE VIDEO FOR NEW SINGLE 'BE APART', NEW ALBUM POOL RELEASED 5TH FEBRUARY

Porches | 06/01/16

Image: Porches - photo credit Jessica Lehrman

Porches’ new album Pool is out via Domino on February 5th, and ahead of its release, the band is pleased to share a video for its latest single, ‘Be Apart’. Premiered via Fader earlier today, ‘Be Apart’ can be viewed below now.

The video was directed by Daniel Brereton (Connan Mockasin, Django Django, Kindness, Metronomy) and was filmed outside London during a recent UK/EU tour.

Says Maine on ‘Be Apart’:

“’Be Apart’ is sort of about moving to New York City and wanting to belong. It's about nightlife, about being taken away, losing control, longing for acceptance, and letting go. I imagine the music video portraying some sort of cult or family living in a mansion. The cult/mansion represent both what you might long to be a part of and also the sentiment of longing to be elsewhere, a part of what is outside.”

This video comes off the back of the previously released ‘Hour’ (watch HERE), which features Maine's partner and frequent collaborator, Greta Kline a.k.a Frankie Cosmos.

Next month marks the much-anticipated release of Pool, Porches’ debut full-length for Domino and a major step forward for Maine —as an evolving singer/songwriter, and as a nascent producer. Written and recorded almost entirely in his Manhattan apartment, and mixed by Chris Coady (Beach House, Grizzly Bear, Tobias Jesso Jr) in Los Angeles, Pool was influenced, in part, by settling in the city as an artist and a person. Says Maine, “there was something special about recording this album in my new home. To be surrounded by the city and in my own world at the same time. I quickly became obsessed with the energy around me, and my experience of New York - I was forced to see my music in an entirely different context.  This was challenging, but also exciting, when the songs started to sound like a true reflection of what I was feeling in my new surroundings."

Pool is available to pre-order now on limited pressing clear vinyl, CD, and digital download.

Pre-order: Dom Mart / Bandcamp / iTunes

Porches will be taking off on an extensive 2016 North American tour, starting March 9 in Washington, DC. The tour is a co-headline with label-mate Alex G, and will feature Your Friend, another fellow Domino artist, on support for all dates. Tickets to all shows are on sale now.

BONNIE 'PRINCE' BILLY TO RELEASE POND SCUM, A NEW COLLECTION OF JOHN PEEL SESSIONS, 22ND JANUARY

Bonnie 'Prince' Billy | 06/01/16

Image: Pond Scum

There are no Peel sessions anymore - that tradition was buried in the pyramids with John Peel himself upon the great man's passing. Of the thousands left in the wake, six are ascribed to Bonnie 'Prince' Billy - and of those six, three have been combined to form the deeply congruous experience of Pond Scum.

A span of eight years is covered, in reverse, and many chestnuts are rolled out, freed of former contexts with sparse arrangements. "(I Was Drunk at the) Pulpit" feels, ten years from inception, more vividly worn; "Death to Everyone" is loosed from its frame, the bones decoupled and spread out, giving the song a reflective air (as opposed the biting declamation of the original); "Arise, Therefore" adapts its metronomic base, the evangelic twist of its roots made palpable. With the centre of the performance in stark relief, the gnomic qualities of two "Get On Jolly" pieces are intensified. Further accenting the devoted spirit of this collection is the inclusion of Bonnie's take on Prince's "The Cross", as well as the previously-unreleased original "Beezle."

Bonnie's lone shadow casts over this lot, accompanied on the first four tracks by David Heumann, but otherwise playing solo through a set of original songs (and two covers) representing a decade of progress in the almost unbearably intimate-yet-unknowable manner that was so often the vibe of those strange and wondrous days.

Layers peel to reveal the subtle artistry and refinement contained within these sessions, so begin to dig deep into the vault on January 22nd, 2016! But wait, there's more! You can download a new arrangement of "Rich Wife Full of Happiness", (which is similar in tone, but not found on Pond Scum!)!

Listen to and download “Rich Wife Full Of Happiness” HERE

Pond Scum is available on CD (WIGCD374), vinyl (WIGLP374) and digitally (WIG374D).  You can purchase Pond Scum via Dom Mart or iTunes.

BILL RYDER-JONES SHARES VIDEO FOR NEW SINGLE WILD ROSES, NEW ALBUM WEST KIRBY COUNTY PRIMARY OUT NOW, FORTHCOMING HEADLINE DATES INCLUDE LONDON'S SCALA MARCH 3RD, TICKETS ON SALE NOW

Bill Ryder-Jones | 14/12/15

Image: Wild Roses video still

Bill Ryder-Jones has today shared a video for ‘Wild Roses’, the latest single taken from his highly acclaimed album, West Kirby County Primary.

The new video, again directed by James Slater, finds Ryder-Jones captaining a 5-a-side football team featuring his live band members against a team of local Evertonian heroes. Watch the video now below.

West Kirby County Primary, the third full-length album from multi-instrumentalist, producer and composer, Bill Ryder-Jones, is the follow-up to A Bad Wind Blows In My Heart and was written and recorded by Ryder-Jones in his childhood bedroom at his mother’s house in West Kirby before being filtered through Liverpool’s legendary Parr Street Studios. A classic band record, West Kirby County Primary features Bill playing a multitude of instruments including the electric guitar with his trademark prowess.

Mixed by James Ford, each of West Kirby County Primary’s ten tracks offers a sneaked glance into his private world; they eavesdrop on a set of encounters that go about “turning stories into beautiful truth” set to glorious molten melody that explodes like fireworks over water. It all adds up to a remarkable record by one of our most cherished musicians – a musical polymath as at ease on stage with the Manchester Camerata (where he performed ‘If…’ as part of the Manchester Literature Festival last Autumn) or on live guitar duties with Arctic Monkeys as he is on production duties with Hooton Tennis Club and The Wytches.

Bill Ryder-Jones supports the release of West Kirby County Primary and the new single with new live dates throughout 2016. The new dates include a run of UK headline dates in March, including London’s Scala on March 3rd. New European support dates with Mumford and Sons throughout May have also been announced. Tickets for all listed dates are on sale now, with UK dates highlighted in bold.

VILLAGERS SHARE BEHIND THE SCENES FOOTAGE FOR ‘HOT SCARY SUMMER’ FILMED LIVE AT RAK STUDIOS, LONDON

Villagers | 03/12/15

Image: Villagers Hot Scary Summer still

Where Have You Been All My Life?, released on 8th January 2016, is a collection of songs that distils five years and three albums of Villagers’ songwriting into one flowing narrative.

Recorded in one day at London’s RAK Studio with Richard Woodcraft (Radiohead, The Last Shadow Puppets) and Villagers live engineer Ber Quinn, the album is a re-imagining of older material seamlessly woven with present glories from Villagers’ most recent studio album, Darling Arithmetic.

Watch behind the scenes footage of the recording of the track ‘Hot Scary Summer’ HERE.

Released in April 2015, Conor O’Brien’s third album under the guise of Villagers was a more pared-back, intimate journey compared to the multi-faceted arrangements of Becoming A Jackal (2010) and {Awayland} (2013). This fresh approach was extended on subsequent Villagers tours, where old songs were reinvented to match the new. Then for one day in July 2015, 18 songs were quickly captured and 12 songs chosen for the final album, making it Villagers’ most intense, but satisfying, session to date. These recordings are all first or second takes, and the immediacy of the occasion was part of the magic that day, live and unadorned by overdubs or studio trickery.

The unique nature of these arrangements is due in no small part to the musicians in the room at the time of recording: Cormac Curran on grand piano and analogue synthesizer, Danny Snow on double bass, Mali Llywelyn on harp, mellotron and vocals, and Gwion Llewelyn on drums, flugelhorn and vocals. The result is a lush, harmony-laden and vibrant document of a time and a place.

Included in the album are new versions of ‘The Waves’ and ‘Memoir’ – a track written by O’Brien for Charlotte Gainsbourg’s 2011 album Stage Whisper.    Listen to ‘Memoir’ and ‘The Waves’ below.

‘Where Have You Been All My Life?’ will be available on LP (WIGLP368), CD (WIGCD368), Digital (WIG368D) and Deluxe LP (green coloured vinyl  with two bonus tracks on the download card, ‘Pieces’ & ‘No-one to Blame’). Pre-order the album from Dom Mart HERE and iTunes HERE.

ANIMAL COLLECTIVE ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM 'PAINTING WITH'; LISTEN TO "FLORIDADA"

Animal Collective | 30/11/15

Image: Animal Collective Painting With press photo

Animal Collective is pleased to announce the release of their eleventh full-length album, Painting Withreleased on February 19. Today, the band share first single ‘FloriDada.’ Listen to it below.

For fifteen years Animal Collective has been rewriting the musical map, their line-up and aesthetic shifting with each astonishing release as they continue their pursuit of a new psychedelia. Their wild path has taken them from cramped concrete basement shows and forest floor singalongs to immersive installations at the Guggenheim and performances to millions on national television. So where to from here?

Dizzyingly upbeat and gloriously realized, the new album bounces and pops with an urgent, ecstatic energy, propelled by polyrhythmic beats and gurgling modular synth, with Noah Lennox and Dave Portner’s vocals gleefully falling in and out of syncopation and off-kilter harmony.

Working as a trio, Portner (Avey Tare), Lennox (Panda Bear) and Brian Weitz (Geologist) began trading demos in early 2015, pursuing a goal of what Portner calls “really short songs: no B.S, get in, get out material…” The three met in Asheville during that spring and began exploring the songs together. Recording took place in the legendary EastWest Studios in Hollywood, home to sessions by The Beach Boys and Marvin Gaye. The album features contributions from John Cale and Colin Stetson, and was engineered by Sonny DiPerri.

The result: Painting With. Warm and personal, kaleidoscopic and high definition, concerned with art (Cubism, Dadaism, and the distorted way those artists viewed the world) and the human experience, and the meeting of both - creating something elemental, joyous, and unmistakably Animal Collective.

Painting With will be available in standard CD, LP, and a limited deluxe edition format. The album in CD and LP formats will be available in three different covers, featuring each Animal Collective member – Avey Tare, Geologist, and Panda Bear - as painted by Brian DeGraw and displayed below. The limited deluxe edition format exclusively available via the Animal Collective and Domino stores includes a choice of one of the three covers, 180 gram heavyweight vinyl, a zoetropic 12" turntable slipmat that animates when activated in part with a strobe light, and a bonus 7” featuring two exclusive non-album tracks mailed at a later date. All pre-orders, including from iTunes, come with an instant download of "FloriDada."

PORCHES ANNOUNCES NEW ALBUM POOL, SHARES VIDEO FOR HOUR, ANNOUNCES 2016 CO-HEADLINE TOUR WITH ALEX G

Porches | 19/11/15

Image: Porches - press shot photo credit Paley Fairman

Porches, the recording project of New York-based Aaron Maine, today announces the new album, Pool, set for release on February 5, 2016, via Domino. Written and recorded in his Manhattan apartment, Pool is an elegantly drawn set of gorgeous, synth-driven pop songs, expanding on and re-articulating the melancholy we’ve come to know from previous single releases on Terrible (2014’s Prism), Birdtapes (2013’s Townie Blunt Guts) and Seagreen (2014’s Leather), and a full length on Exploding in Sound (2013’s Slow Dance In The Cosmos).

Additionally, Porches today shares a video for the current single ‘Hour’, which was released digitally on October 8. Directed by Alan Del Rio Ortiz (Blood Orange, Danny Brown, St. Vincent, Petite Noir), the video stars Maine and Kline as star-crossed lovers on a night excursion. Watch the video now below.

Says Del Rio Ortiz of the clip:

"I wanted to create a simple but hallucinogenic montage dealing with a love affair that no longer exists but would never vanish. On the surface we see a young couple driving around the city and sneaking into a swimming pool. However we also see nostalgic imagery that creates a feeling of loss and illustrates a severed relationship."

Pool is Porches’ debut full-length for Domino and a major step forward for Maine —as an evolving singer/songwriter, and as a nascent producer. Written and recorded almost entirely in the Manhattan apartment he shares with his partner and collaborator, Greta Kline a.k.a Frankie Cosmos, and mixed by Chris Coady (Beach House, Grizzly Bear, Tobias Jesso Jr) in Los Angeles, Pool was influenced, in part, by settling in the city as an artist and a person. “I’m feeling like I’m in a more permanent situation than I’ve been in before,” he says. “There is something special about recording at home. It’s why it sounds the way it does. Being able to obsess over it on your own time and being in your own little cube knowing you’re surrounded by the city, being able to go so deep into it and to spend hours building it, loving it: all of that allowed me to reflect and focus on things a little closer.”

Pool is available to pre-order now on limited pressing coke bottle clear vinyl, CD, and digital download.

YOUR FRIEND ANNOUNCES DEBUT ALBUM 'GUMPTION', OUT JANUARY 29TH, SHARES NEW TRACK HEATHERING

Your Friend | 12/11/15

Image: Your Friend launch shot

Taryn Miller, aka Your Friend, is today pleased to share the first taste of new music since last year’s debut EP, in the form of new song ‘Heathering’.

The brooding, elegantly haunted track marks a new chapter in Miller’s career – one that will be fully revealed with the release of her debut full-length, titled Gumption, on January 29th, 2016 via Domino.

The release of ‘Heathering’ comes just ahead of Miller’s participation in the Red Bull Music Academy in Paris, during which she will participate in the Cosmorama event, to be held next Tuesday, November 17th, alongside like-minded artists sitting at the musical intersection of lush electronica and indie-inflected pop music.

Since the release of her debut self-recorded EP, Jekyll/Hyde, in early 2014, Taryn Miller has experienced many firsts as an artist – her first tour (with Courtney Barnett), her first SXSW (in 2014, in support of the EP release), and her first time working in a proper studio with a producer. And now, the 24-year-old who resides in Lawrence, Kansas and makes music under the moniker Your Friend, begins the process of another first – the release of her debut full length album, Gumption.

Miller began writing the songs that would become Gumption at her studio space and apartment in Lawrence, Kansas after returning from touring in mid-2014. As a part of the album’s process, Miller acquired a field recorder that she used to explore sound from a familiar place. She took it to her family farm in Dexter, KS and drove around, dipping her senses into childhood nostalgia.

From there, she started recording with producer Nicolas Vernhes (The War on Drugs, Deerhunter) at the Rare Book Room in Brooklyn, which helped Your Friend fulfill a penchant for drones, loops and found sounds. “I paid attention to textures,” Miller says. “I was trying to remove myself from an approach that I had followed before, but still wanted to bring in that melodic element that is most inherent to me, and marry it with a more sonically meditative landscape.”

Gumption will be available on CD and standard LP via the Domino Mart. Pre-order the album from the Domino Mart HERE or iTunes HERE and receive an instant download of ‘Heathering’. The standard LP comes in a single jacket with a printed inner sleeve and is accompanied by a MP3 download card.

YORKSTON/THORNE/KHAN ANNOUNCE NEW COLLABORATIVE ALBUM EVERYTHING SACRED

Yorkston/Thorne/Khan | 03/11/15

Image: Yorkston/Thorne/Khan

Yorkston/Thorne/Khan release their collaborative debut album ‘Everything Sacred’ on Friday the 15th of January 2016.  Listen to their cover of Ivor Cutler’s ‘Little Black Buzzer’ featuring the trio joined by the superb and distinctive young Irish singer Lisa O’Neill below.

Yorkston/Thorne/Khan are an experimental group that includes James Yorkston, one of the most “influential singer/songwriters on the Scottish folk scene”, Suhail Yusuf Khan, award winning sarangi player and classical singer from New Delhi and Jon Thorne, best known as jazz double bass player with electro outfit Lamb.

This is Scottish-Irish-Indian-English music in the raw, Yorkston's familiar steel guitar strings pulled, pushed and bent into more unfamiliar acoustic drones, the bass dropping anchors through the floor. Rather than world music per se, this sounds more idiosyncratic, a temporary structure bivouacking by the side of the indie-folk, art music tradition, while its widening horizons extend back to the Sixties heyday of the Incredible String Band, and forward to this singular album's satellite orbit over the folk music, Indian classical and indie music of today – all these musical ley lines threaded into a new kind of eclectic, domestic setting.

“Playing together as Yorkston / Thorne / Khan, we tackle a wide array of different sounds and songs. Alongside pieces of our own, there’s a fair chunk of improvisation, plus covers of Ivor Cutler’s ‘Little Black Buzzer’ and Lal Waterson’s ‘Song For Thirza’. Jon’s jazz back-ground definitely comes to the fore, as does Suhail’s devotional singing and outstanding sarangi playing. I just do my best to keep up…” – James Yorkston

‘Everything Sacred’ will be available on CD (WIGCD367), Standard LP (WIGLP367), Deluxe LP (WIGLP367X) and digitally.  The Deluxe LP features a die cut sleeve with a bonus 7” featuring exclusive tracks ‘Peggio’ and ‘The Blues You Sang’ with download card.  You can pre-order the album  via Dom Mart HERE and iTunes HERE.

Many Moons, the debut solo album from Martin Courtney, is out now on Domino. The bright, lush, 10-song collection of soft psychedelia, which was previewed during a string of CMJ shows earlier this month, further cements the Real Estate frontman’s talent for writing deceptively affecting songs – jangly, melancholic jams touching on themes of past and present, loss and love, home and the heart.

Stream Many Moons here.

Today, Courtney is sharing a cover of Pavement’s ‘Major Leagues’. Recorded as part of a Sirius XMU session, the video can be viewed now below.

BILL RYDER-JONES STREAMS NEW ALBUM ‘WEST KIRBY COUNTY PRIMARY’, SHARES NEW VIDEO FOR CATHARINE AND HUSKISSON

Bill Ryder-Jones | 29/10/15

Image: Bill Ryder Jones credit Rachel King

Bill Ryder-Jones is streaming acclaimed new album West Kirby County Primary in full ahead of its release on 6th November. Listen now via NPR First Listen.

Alongside the album stream, a new video for album track ‘Catharine and Huskisson’, directed by James Slater, is streaming now – watch the video below. The new video follows Slater’s videos for the albums lead single ‘Two To Birkenhead’ (watch HERE) and ‘Satellites’ (watch HERE).

THE BOHICAS LAUNCH VIDEO FOR NEW SINGLE ‘THE MAKING OF’, DEBUT ALBUM OUT NOW

The Bohicas | 27/10/15

Image: The Making Of - video still

The Bohicas have launched the action packed video for their new single ‘The Making Of’ – watch the video below.  Directed by Ozzie Pullin, the video features lead singer Dominic McGuinness dealing with a personal struggle of a very unique kind.

Pullin conceived the idea and worked with the band on how to pull it all together, enlisting McGuinness as the main protagonist.

"For me the concept is all about the battle we have with each other as individuals and I wanted to explore this idea in a kind of purgatory way, in that it's never ending. It's something we have to deal with through our lives. So when the band were keen on the concept, I knew we could make something special that we all were happy with. I couldn't have asked for more from the guys, they absolutely killed it, that completely shows in the final product", says director Pullin.

McGuinness’ acting debut made for epic behind the scenes viewing: “I basically got the crap kicked out of me by the stunt double all day as my bandmates watched on in hysterics. Luckily, it looks like I’m throwing all the punches in the final video so we did what we set out to do!”

It’s been a busy time for the band; recently nominated for Best New Act at the Q Awards, they are currently on the last leg of their UK and Europe headline tour. The band will also be heading back to Japan in November where they will play the Hostess Weekender in Tokyo and Osaka alongside the likes of Bloc Party, Mystery Jets and Daughter.

The Bohicas are rock and roll painted in vivid primary colours. Hi def, loud, fast and shiny. A barrage of killer hooks, razor blade riffs and choruses that slap you in the face, grab your hand and lead you onto the dance floor. All shot through with pulp imagery torn from the pages of a graphic novel.

Blood Orange – aka Devonté Hynes – today releases a new song, titled ‘Sandra’s Smile’, accompanied by a video shot last week in New York. Directed and edited by Hynes himself, and featuring cameos from Junglepussy, Ian Isiah, and Waffle Crew, the ‘Sandra’s Smile’ video can be seen below.

Blood Orange will perform his first U.S. show of 2015 on December 12, 2015 when he returns to the stage at Harlem’s World Famous Apollo Theater in NYC alongside a cast of friends and collaborators.

The show at Harlem’s World Famous Apollo Theater will feature not only music from Hynes’ critically acclaimed first two albums under the Blood Orange moniker, but will also include the live debut of brand new Blood Orange material.

All proceeds from the show will benefit the Opus 118 Harlem School of Music, a program that transforms the lives of their students and families through access to quality music education both in-school and after-school.

Says Hynes, “Playing music saved my life; if it wasn't for the chance to play cello or piano when I was a kid growing up in Essex, I shudder to think where I'd be right now. At this point in my life, all that matters to me is giving back to communities and making people happy, so I have decided to put on a fun night of performances at the legendary Apollo Theatre in Harlem that is hopefully affordable to all, with all proceeds going to the Opus 118 Harlem School of Music.  New York City, let's have some fun!"

VILLAGERS ANNOUNCE ‘WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL MY LIFE?’ FOR 8TH JANUARY PLUS UK TOUR

Villagers | 19/10/15

Image: Villagers WHYBAML packshot

Where Have You Been All My Life?, released on 8th January 2016, is a collection of songs that distils five years and three albums of Villagers’ songwriting into one flowing narrative.

Recorded in one day at London’s RAK Studio with Richard Woodcraft (Radiohead, The Last Shadow Puppets) and Villagers live engineer Ber Quinn, the album is a re-imagining of older material seamlessly woven with present glories from Villagers’ most recent studio album, Darling Arithmetic.

Included in the album is a new recording of ‘Memoir’, which O’Brien wrote for Charlotte Gainsbourg; it can be found on her 2011 album Stage Whisper, but has never before been recorded as a live cut by Villagers until now.

CASS MCCOMBS TO RELEASE A FOLK SET APART: RARITIES, B-SIDES & SPACE JUNK, OUT DECEMBER 11TH

Cass McCombs | 13/10/15

Image: Cass McCombs photo credit Pony Cassels

December 11th marks the release of A Folk Set Apart: Rarities, B-Sides & Space Junk, Etc., an alternate retelling of the last decade in the life of extraordinary songwriter Cass McCombs.

Comprising songs from 2003-2014, the album showcases McCombs’ thematic and emotional diversity. A black mirror to his catalogue, there are varying moments of reflection, madness, and dark humor. Also of politics - “Bradley Manning,” which debuted on Democracy Now, is a modern folk ballad of the convicted Army whistleblower, and directly quotes Manning’s own Facebook posts. McCombs has a unique ability to stitch together ancient techniques with our current primitive mind.

For all their differences, this collection of songs reveals the artist as navigator of avoidance. They have been unearthed from the so-called underground - culled from the various limited, rare sources from which they were initially released on different independent labels on both sides of the pond, now compiled by Domino. For the past decade, most of these have been next to impossible to find, and for the first time are now readily available. Many were first unveiled as split 7”s, only sold at shows, whose artist pairings are as diverse as McCombs’ own musical tendencies: e.g. Meat Puppets (“Evangeline,” “Night of the World”), Michael Hurley (“Three Men Sitting On A Hollow Log”) and White Magic (“If You Loved Me Before”).

McCombs is a perennial favorite of many acclaimed musicians - as evidenced by the broad range of guests who appear on the tracks: Mike Gordon (Phish) co-wrote and lent his unmistakable vocal to the bizarre experiment, “Texas”; PREfection-era drummer, Tim Dewit aka Dutch E. Germ (Gang Gang Dance) on “A.Y.D.”; drummer Joe Russo (Furthur) on “Evangeline” and “Night Of The World”; Chris Cohen (Deerhoof) plays guitar on “Poet’s Day” and “An Other”; Tim Cedar (from noise/punk band Ligament) drums on “Twins”; among many other anti-heroes from the musical underground, proving community defies classification.

Parallel universes obviously exist, but where are they before we experience them? The occult world stalks us until the final coup-de-gras. But McCombs is not a mystic but a brutal realist, exposing himself warts and all, in the punk tradition.

These songs will both satiate and perplex those already familiar with McCombs, while compelling and rewarding new listeners, pointing a way towards his back catalog. It’s a glimpse behind the studio curtain at one of the greatest songwriters of the 21st Century. True trash esoterica.

A Folk Set Apart includes 19 songs (19 on CD, 11 on LP + 8 digital bonus tracks) all remastered for this release. Five of these songs are previously unreleased. The LP is a single vinyl in a gatefold jacket, which includes a printed inner sleeve and an MP3 download card.

Pre-order via Dom Mart or iTunes.

McCombs will be playing a string of US dates in the coming weeks. October sees him open for Kurt Vile on the West Coast, and November he’ll be opening for My Morning Jacket on one night of their four-night run at New York’s famed Beacon Theatre. Details below.

PORCHES RELEASES NEW SINGLE “HOUR”, SIGNS TO DOMINO, LONDON HEADLINE AND CMJ SHOWS ANNOUNCED

Porches | 08/10/15

Image: Porches - press shot

Porches is the proliferation of Aaron Maine’s love affair with music. Never quite landing in any particular niche, Maine navigates through genres, learning, obsessing, and absorbing. Great victories and great defeats, cosmic or tangible, are the underlying elements that remain constant through his music.

Today, Maine has released the first song from his anticipated forthcoming album, the first via his new home at Domino. The track, titled “Hour”, streaming below now, features Frankie Cosmos, Maine’s long time musical and life collaborator. Together their voices weave through the layers of synth and keyboards, pulsing at every turn. The song touches on the music Maine is known for, with his previous releases on Double Double Whammy, Exploding In Sound and Terrible Records, but also shows a progression and maturity for an artist who has delivered his strongest work to date.

Porches will be playing CMJ in New York next week including stops at the FADER, Ad Hoc, Brooklyn Vegan and Terrible Records events. Maine and his band will also play at the special invite only Domino showcase on Wednesday October 14th. Porches will then head to Iceland Airwaves festival in November before a London headline show at Moth Club on Monday November 9th.

BILL RYDER-JONES SHARES VIDEO FOR NEW TRACK SATELLITES, FURTHER UK HEADLINE DATES ANNOUNCED, NEW ALBUM WEST KIRBY COUNTY PRIMARY OUR NOVEMBER 6TH

Bill Ryder-Jones | 07/10/15

Image: Bill Ryder-Jones NL.jpg

With the forthcoming release of new album West Kirby County Primary, 6th November on Domino, Bill Ryder-Jones has shared the album’s latest track in ‘Satellites’. Watch the video for ‘Satellites’ below.

The new video, again directed by James Slater following his work on the video for the album’s lead single ‘Two To Birkenhead’ (watch HERE), follows Ryder-Jones at his recent performance at this year’s Green Man Festival.

Satellites stands out as one of the most personal moments of Ryder-Jones musical history to date. Speaking candidly of the song’s origin and sentiment he says, “The song revolves around something my ex-girlfriend said once that helped me in coming to terms with the awful thought I was having. She said 'something somewhere must be happening' - that line refers to the particular thought that life wasn't real for me and that no matter what it is that I felt I was experiencing, the fact that I'm experiencing something means that somewhere there must be something to experience.”

West Kirby County Primary, the third full-length album from multi-instrumentalist, producer and composer, Bill Ryder-Jones, is the follow-up to A Bad Wind Blows In My Heart was written and recorded by Ryder-Jones in his childhood bedroom at his mother’s house in West Kirby before being filtered through Liverpool’s legendary Parr Street Studios. A classic band record, West Kirby County Primary features Bill playing a multitude of instruments including the electric guitar with his trademark prowess

Bill Ryder-Jones will be performing live throughout the UK in November with a date at The Lexington in London on 11th November. He is also performing as a special guest to Spector on their UK October tour. Full dates with ticket links are as follows with headline dates in bold :

THE TRIFFIDS, BORN SANDY DEVOTIONAL OUT NOW

The Triffids | 29/09/15

Image: Sandy Born Devotional Deluxe

Available on vinyl for the first time since 1986; ‘Born Sandy Devotional’ by The Triffids! The beautifully remastered LP comes in custom, hand-numbered limited sleeves (250 only). Also includes lyric sheet, printed inner sleeve and download code and pressed onto 180gm heavyweight virgin vinyl.

Remastered following David McCombs’ original production notes (Audiophile Quality), this is the best this record has ever sounded. Below is a bit of insight into the process of the remastering:

When undertaking the re-issue of “Born Sandy Devotional” for vinyl, we thought long and hard about the best way to master it. This was an analogue (solid state) recorded album, tracked to 2” tape and cut from either ½” or ¼” reels. However, when re-mastered for CD back in 2006, the tracks were transferred to digital to allow the use of more modern and sophisticated eqs (parametric eq, limiting etc).
We could have returned to the original cutting tapes, but we were so impressed with the digital audio, captured at 24 bit / 96K resolution, that we felt these files should be used for the LP instead.
It was at this point that we decided to transfer the music back on to ¼” tape to add a little warmth and sparkle to the upper mids and high frequencies. More specifically at Gearbox studios on a Studer C37 – one of the finest tape transports ever built. Yes, it is a valve/tube machine, but it has been serviced to better than factory specifications, and the tiny amounts of “noise” added to the program are far outweighed by the sonic benefits of going back on tape.

Once these cutting tapes were created, the production masters were made by Darrel Scheinman using a fully analogue signal path (see the Gearbox website for more info: www.gearboxrecords.com) - a Scully/Westrex lathe performing the final lacquer cutting duties. One other note here is that the record was cut fixed pitch - it would originally have been done “varigroove”, but the somewhat lost “art” of “fixed pitch” can yield better results if done with care and skill!
The initial test pressings weren’t quite what we were looking for, so after many adjustments, 3 recuts (!) and input from all sides, including the pressing plant, who became interested in the way we were working, test pressings were received which exceeded all expectations.

We hope you enjoy the results. A great record, treated in the way we feel best.

Love Songs For Robots continues to receive widespread critical praise: The new music was recorded at Capitol Studios in Los Angeles and Pierre Marchand Studio in Montreal. Of the record, some of which debuted at private concerts in small loft spaces, Watson explains, “I wanted to make a science fiction R n’ B meets Vangelis erotica with a zest of folk kind of record.” It was only halfway through writing the record when the artist found himself having, by his own admission, “a bad year” that more personal themes begin to creep in. “I started thinking about how emotional reactions were more mechanical than we think and the only thing left between us and artificial intelligence is the act of inspiration. Just food for thought.”

Watson composes, performs and records his albums with his full band of almost a decade, which includes Joe Grass (guitars), Robbie Kuster (drums/percussion) and Mishka Stein (bass). The recipient of Canada’s elite Polaris Music Prize in 2007, Watson and his band have performed to over 100,000 people at the 2009 Montreal Jazz Festival as well as with full orchestras in Amsterdam and Montreal. Raised and still living in Montreal, Watson himself has composed 15 scores for both film and television, including a trailer for “The Walking Dead” and Wim Wenders’ new 3D film “Everything Will Be Fine”, where he performed the songs “Cynical World” (an original for the film) and “Lighthouse.”

JULIA HOLTER SHARES LIVE PERFORMANCE OF BETSY ON THE ROOF, ALBUM OUT NOW

Julia Holter | 25/09/15

Image: Julia Holter image - photo credite Tonje Thilesen

Coinciding with today’s worldwide release of the highly anticipated and richly acclaimed new album Have You In My Wilderness, Julia Holter has today shared a brand new live performance film for ‘Betsy On The Roof’ in collaboration with Nowness. Watch the film and read an accompanying interview on Nowness HERE or below.

Directed by Federico Urdaneta and filmed in a picturesquely unique location within London St. Pancras clock tower, the new film sees Holter taking ‘Betsy On The Roof’ to its stark roots in a stunning acoustic performance, amplifying the song’s heart and character in a bright new setting.

Have You in My Wilderness was written from the heart – warm, dark and raw – and explores love, trust, and power in human relationships. While love songs are familiar in pop music, Holter manages to stay fascinatingly oblique and enigmatic, with some of the most sublime and transcendent music she has ever written. Like Holter’s previous albums, Have You in My Wilderness is multi-layered and texturally rich, featuring an array of electronic and acoustic instruments played by an ensemble of gifted Los Angeles musicians.

Have You in My Wilderness is also Holter’s most sonically intimate album, with her vocals front and centre in the mix, lifted out of the layers of smeared, hazy effects. The result is striking: clear and vivid, but disarmingly personal.

Have You In My Wilderness is available on CD (WIGCD341), digital (WIG341D) and LP (WIGLP341). For a very limited period the vinyl LP will come with a photographic print signed by the artist, via Dom Mart only. The album includes the single ‘Feel You’ (watch the video HERE) as well as previously released tracks ‘Sea Calls Me Home’ (watch the video HERE) and ‘Betsy On The Roof’ (listen to the official audio HERE). BEAT HAPPENING “LOOK AROUND” 2-LP ANTHOLOGY TO BE RELEASED NOVEMBER 20 ON DOMINO

Beat Happening | 21/09/15

Image: Look Around

“The biggest thing ever to happen to indie pop in America... Most of what's written about this band is all about that sweet pop and those childish affectations, but that misses the substance at the core: Their music was dark, damaged, full of fright and sex and death and vulnerability-- just like any real childhood...their hopscotch stories felt punker than Black Flag tattoos ever could.” - Nitsuh Abebe, Pitchfork

Exploding the teenage underground into passionate revolt against the corporate ogre since 1983, Beat Happening formed in Olympia, Washington by Calvin Johnson, Heather Lewis and Bret Lunsford. The band combined a modern primitive pop sound with the D.I.Y. ethos of ‘anyone can do it’ and inspired countless bands and labels along the way. The music community that arose around the band and their label, K, may have seemed the sonic antithesis of their Seattle neighbors (and friends) but was no less influential.

30 years since the release of their self-titled debut album (the subject of a 33 1/3 book out next week), Look Around is a remastered, career-spanning double album anthology, handpicked by the band and a great starting point for the uninitiated as well a refreshing reminder to those who caught the wave the first time around. The 23 tracks range from their 1984 debut single, “Our Secret” b/w “What’s Important” (originally sold directly for $2.50 to individuals, but $4 to institutions) to “Angel Gone,” a single released in 2000 after eight years of inactivity.

Look Around is available on all digital services September 22, while the physical release, out November 20, will comprise the following formats: CD, gatefold double LP, limited-edition royal blue cassette, and a Domino Mart exclusive gatefold double LP bundled with a limited edition light yellow 7” of “Indian Summer” and “Foggy Eyes”. Domino is also planning an extensive Beat Happening album reissue series in 2016.

The oft-covered “Indian Summer” from 1998’s Jamboree LP — which Ben Gibbard once called “the indie ‘Freebird’” and was named one of Pitchfork’s “Best Songs of the 1980s” (“it means something slightly different every time it’s heard”) — is now streaming below.

Calvin Johnson will be returning to London in November for a headlining show at The Tin Tabernacle in Kilburn on Wednesday November 18th and a Rough Trade East Q&A on Wednesday the 25th of November.  More dates to be announced soon.

Buy Look Around via iTunes HERE, or stream via Spotify HERE.

Beat Happening Look Around

“We are Beat Happening and we don’t do Nirvana covers. They do Beat Happening covers.”*

The legend of Beat Happening, and of K, the label that Calvin Johnson founded, is full of big names they worked with before they were stars (Beck! Modest Mouse! The Gossip!), and big names they influenced (Kurt Cobain! Sleater-Kinney!) Less acknowledged, however, is that Bret Lunsford, Heather Lewis, and Calvin Johnson created some of the most original and surprising music to come out of the often deliberately weird American punk rock tradition.

Working from a sonic template of the Cramps, Trouble Funk, Young Marble Giants, and messianic blues, Beat Happening confounded and often incited violence from audiences weaned on hardcore punk. In the place of macho aggression, Beat Happening confronted the all-ages scene with Heather’s low-key delivery and Calvin’s fey theatrics, topped off by his trademark dance move: rubbing his tummy. For a supposedly cutesy band, Beat Happening was adamant about asserting its right to exist, carrying itself with a punk as fuck attitude that would become a key inspirational lodestone for the generation of D.I.Y. bands that followed, including Bikini Kill and the Nation of Ulysses.

In Calvin’s own words: “This idea that Beat Happening was popular in some way was never true. And in fact, I don’t think people understand the level of animosity that Beat Happening attracted through most of our time performing live. This concept that we were this performing group that were some kind of—I don’t know—shy pop… our performances were clearly confrontational.”**

Fans only familiar with Beat Happening’s self-titled first album of 1985, or just the cat in a rocketship line-drawing on its cover, or the much-covered “Indian Summer” from 1988’s Jamboree, will be surprised at the band’s range and musicality. In the absence of a bass player, the guitar and drums had to carry more character in the songs, and alongside the de rigueur post-punk and indiepop moves, Beat Happening omnivorously shifted from go-go to surf to Shaggs-esque outsider pop to Krautrock. All this was accompanied by a sexual energy thinly veiled behind the band’s nostalgic celebration of childhood. The band’s final album, 1992’s forgotten classic You Turn Me On, was a gorgeous lo-fi dream-pop opus co-produced by bedroom pop legend Stuart Moxham of Young Marble Giants.

Look Around is a chronological survey of Beat Happening’s remarkable arc, from its deliberately amateurish debut, produced by Northwest punk legend Greg Sage of the Wipers, to its fluent and stunning 1992 finale, appended with one stray track: the lovely “Angel Gone,” a one-off single recorded in 2000 with then-K wunderkind Phil Elverum (the Microphones, Mount Eerie) to accompany the band’s now out-of-print career-spanning retrospective box set Crashing Through. At the turn of the millennium, we weren’t quite ready to rediscover Beat Happening. But in our age of omnivorous music consumption enabled by social networking, the story of Beat Happening, the band that helped create an international network of underground pop and then had the gumption to bring everyone to sleepy little Olympia, Washington for 1991’s epochal International Pop Underground Convention, makes a lot of sense.

ALEX G SHARES NEW TRACK ‘KICKER’

Alex G | 21/09/15

Image: Alex G Press Shot 2

Kicker’, the third taste of Alex G’s forthcoming album Beach Music, is available to hear now. ‘Kicker’ comes off the back of previously shared tracks ‘Salt’ and ‘Bug’ following its premiere over the weekend on Sirius XMU as part of the Download 15, and is now available to stream or purchase via all good digital retailers.

Want to open your home to Alex and his band on their upcoming European tour? Alex and his 3 bandmates are looking for places to crash in Germany, France, The Netherlands, Belgium, Manchester, and London next month. To get in touch, reach out directly to Alex via his Facebook page HERE.

Alex G’s forthcoming new album Beach Music will be out via Domino on October 9, 2015. The album, his seventh full-length, follows on from previous beloved albums DSU (Orchid Tapes), Trick, and Rules, which have led to a fervent cult fan base, a number of Artist To Watch designations from outlets such as Fader and Rolling Stone, and a dedicated live audience who sing along with every word.

Beach Music is available to pre-order now via the Dom Mart on limited edition LP, standard LP, CD, and digital download. An alternative color run of cassettes has been announced as part of this year’s International Cassette Store Day, taking place on October 17.  Find a list of participating CSD retailers here and call to check availability.

Pre-order: Dom Mart / Bandcamp / iTunes

Beach Music was written and recorded in Giannascoli’s apartment, between the Fall of 2014 and the Spring of 2015, during breaks from touring with the likes of Elvis Depressedly, Cymbals Eat Guitars, and Gardens & Villa. While its predecessors often came in uninterrupted bursts—from his head to his Bandcamp page in a matter of hours and days—Beach Music was shaped in part by Giannascoli adapting to life as a touring musician. Songs were written within months of one another rather than all at once, with influences ranging from noise music to piano-based laments to Southern rock to the rhythmic focus of techno—whatever he happened to be most interested in at the time. “Every song is coming from a different place,” he says. “It branches off in all these directions, but it has its own sound. It’s not something I do intentionally, but I’m the common thread.”

BOB MOSES SHARE ‘TOO MUCH IS NEVER ENOUGH’ VIDEO, ALBUM RELEASED TODAY

Bob Moses | 18/09/15

Image: Bob Moses Talk Press Pic

Few bands can testify to be able to tour the world before even releasing their debut album, and few can do this by marrying a sound and performance that is equally at home in the club as it is an electrifying live setting. Bob Moses fulfil all of these points and it’s the reason they’re delivering one of the most exciting debut albums this year.

The Canadian duo made up of Tom Howie and Jimmy Vallance recently stopped in London to play a sold out one-off show at The Lexington in August where they recorded a live version of current single ‘Too Much Is Never Enough’, directed by Libby Burke Wilde.

JULIA HOLTER SHARES NEW TRACK, BETSY ON THE ROOF

Julia Holter | 17/09/15

Image: Julia Holter image - photo credite Tonje Thilesen

Today Julia Holter shares the passionate torch song, Betsy On The Roof, taken from her highly anticipated forthcoming album Have You In My Wilderness, released 25th September on Domino.

Have You In My Wilderness will be available on CD (WIGCD341), Digital (WIG341D) and LP (WIGLP341). For a very limited period the vinyl LP will come with a photographic print signed by the artist, via Dom Mart only. The album is available to pre-order with an instant grat of ‘Feel You’ (watch the video HERE), ‘Sea Calls Me Home’ and ‘Betsy On The Roof’. Pre-order from Dom Mart HERE and iTunes HERE.

The album tracklisting is as follows:

  1. Feel You
  2. Silhouette
  3. How Long?
  4. Lucette Stranded On The Island
  5. Sea Calls Me Home
  6. Night Song
  7. Everytime Boots

Written, performed and produced by Georgia in its entirety and recorded in her own home-studio, ‘Georgia’ is the product of two years of obsessive work, but also a young lifetime of voracious music listening.

Elements of the glacial yet hyper-melodic tone of early 00's grime, sweltering, mid-summer west London dub and ragga, sophisticated pop, first wave post-punk agitation, the formative influence of Missy Elliott and the high-concept, illuminated sound-design work of contemporary artists such as The Knife and Hudson Mohawke run through ‘Georgia’, a record that reveals new layers of intrigue and ingenuity with every listen.

Georgiais available on CD (WIGCD357), LP (WIGLP357), Deluxe LP (WIGLP357X) and Digital (WIG357D). The Deluxe LP comes with a bonus 10”.  You can purchase the album via Dom Mart or iTunes. The album tracklisting is as follows:

Across its ten audaciously imaginative tracks, Inji reasserts Dust as a truly idiosyncratic voice in British music, applying the same frantically eclectic, mischievous and wilfully absurd spirit of his previous band, the beloved Late of the Pier, to ever more nuanced and affecting songwriting and composition.

From the obscene space-age stadium rock guitar solo of ‘Oino’, the maddeningly catchy digi-dub single that Dust leaked sample-by-sample on a suitably enigmatic website at the turn of the year (watch the video HERE), to ‘Learning To Love’ (watch the video HERE), the record's gargantuan, eight minute long prog-house centrepiece and ‘Occasion’ (watch the video HERE), a melting martian Prince come-on, Inji confounds and delights in equal measure and at every turn.

Inji is available on CD (WIGCD344), LP with download code (WIGLP344), Deluxe LP with download code (WIGLP344x) & Digital (WIG344D). Buy the album through Dom Mart HERE and through iTunes HERE.

ALEX G STREAMS NEW TRACK ‘SALT’

Alex G | 09/09/15

Image: Alex G Jeff Allen Press Shot

Alex G is pleased to share a second song from his forthcoming album Beach Music – the sweetly melancholic ‘Salt’. ‘Salt’ follows on from first single ‘Bug’, an “introverted pop gem” (Stereogum) with a video directed by Micah Van Hove.  Listen to ‘Salt’ below.

Alex G’s forthcoming new album Beach Music will be out via Domino on October 9, 2015. The album, his seventh full-length, follows on from previous beloved albums DSU (Orchid Tapes / Lucky Number Music), Trick, and Rules, which have led to a fervent cult fan base, a number of Artist To Watch designations from outlets such as Fader and Rolling Stone, and a dedicated live audience who sing along with every word.

Beach Music is available to pre-order now via the Dom Mart on limited edition deluxe vinyl LP, standard LP, CD, and digital download. Cassette offerings have already sold out, but an alternative color run of cassettes has been announced as part of this year’s International Cassette Store Day, taking place on October 17.

JULIA HOLTER SHARES VIDEO FOR SEA CALLS ME HOME, NEW ALBUM HAVE YOU IN MY WILDERNESS RELEASED 25TH SEPTEMBER

Julia Holter | 09/09/15

Image: Julia Holter image - photo credite Tonje Thilesen

Following its recent release, Julia Holter has shared a new video for ‘Sea Calls Me Home’, the latest track taken from her highly anticipated new album Have You In My Wilderness, released 25th September. Watch the video below.

The video – directed by Claire Marie Vogel – finds Holter in the picturesque landscape of her California habitat, and explores the surreal imagery of the song. Of the track itself, Holter says: “'Sea Calls Me Home' is about moving away from things that trap you, the scary wonder in discovering freedom.”

Have You In My Wilderness will be available on CD (WIGCD341), Digital (WIG341D) and LP (WIGLP341). For a very limited period the vinyl LP will come with a photographic print signed by the artist, via Dom Mart only. The album is available to pre-order with an instant grat of both ‘Feel You’ (watch the video HERE) and ‘Sea Calls Me Home’. Pre-order from Dom Mart HERE and iTunes HERE.

The album tracklisting is as follows:

  1. Feel You

MARTIN COURTNEY ANNOUNCES MANY MOONS, DEBUT SOLO ALBUM FROM REAL ESTATE FRONTMAN OUT OCTOBER 30TH, WATCH VIDEO FOR NEW SINGLE 'NORTHERN HIGHWAY'

Martin Courtney | 02/09/15

Image: Martin Courtney photo by ShawnBrackbill

Domino is pleased to announce the debut solo album from Real Estate songwriter and frontman Martin Courtney, titled Many Moons, out October 30th 2015

Accompanying the album’s announcement is the video for first single ‘Northern Highway’, directed by Rob Hatch-Miller and Puloma Basu. The video, shot recently in the bucolic summer landscape of upstate New York, is available to view below.

Many Moons is a bright, lush, 10-song collection of soft psychedelia that recalls the Kinks and Big Star even as it probes the depths of his own life as a family man, father, and touring musician. The album is squinting-at-the-sun bright, full of subtle introspection, an elliptical document of Courtney’s transition into family life and fatherhood, largely written while he was on the road touring Atlas, Real Estate’s third full length release.

His players on this album, including Jarvis Taveniere of Woods, who produced the album, and Julian Lynch and Matt Kallman, help bring a newfound sonic clarity, a brightness evidenced in new single ‘Northern Highway’. Songs are rounded out with orchestral arrangements, as in the previously-shared ‘Vestiges’, or the instrumental title track, a sweetly luxurious string and flute number that wouldn’t be out of place on a prime-era Pentangle record.

Listen to ‘VestigesHERE.

Courtney has long made a career of writing songs about what happens when your image of home is something you’re trying to hold on to, when the nostalgia that used to comfort you starts to feel unfamiliar.  On Many Moons, he’s moved through that. It’s not so much a rejection of nostalgia, but an embrace of what’s ahead - an album-length meditation on his life right now, which is the type of exploration Courtney has become exceptional at.

Many Moons will be released on CD, standard and limited edition LP on October 30th 2015 on Domino. The limited edition LP (of 500) is available to pre-order now from Domino and contains an alternate cover with an embossed jacket, featuring an artist logo designed by Robert Beatty and coke-bottle clear colored vinyl.  All pre-orders from Domino or iTunes include instant downloads of ‘Northern Highway’ and ‘Vestiges’.

ALEX G SHARES VIDEO FOR BUG, BEACH MUSIC OUT OCTOBER 9TH

Alex G | 27/08/15

Image: alexgpress

Bug’, the lead track from Alex G’s forthcoming album Beach Music, is now accompanied by a video. Shot in Ojai, California, and directed by Micah Van Hove, the video can be viewed below now.

Says Van Hove of the video:

“The music of Alex G carries such vivid stories, fleeting moments and cunning characterization that one can't help but think visually while listening. The idea here was to explore the cyclical nature of a relationship, the addictive quality of love and the joy and confusion it brings. To experience one full turn of the clock, toying with commitment and the flighty nature of the self. We shot over 2 days in my hometown of Ojai, CA on 4th of July weekend with an extremely hardworking and talented cast and crew.”

BOB MOSES SHARE ‘TALK’ REMIX BY MATRIXXMAN

Bob Moses | 27/08/15

Image: Bob Moses Talk Press Pic

Bob Moses recently announced their debut album Days Gone By, due for release via Domino  on Sept 18, 2015. The band has already revealed two singles from the LP, and now reveal a remix of first single ‘Talk’, courtesy of Matrixxman.

‘Talk’, along with new single ‘Too Much Is Never Enough’, exemplifies the band’s ability to skillfully combine guitar-lead songwriting and stirring electronic production to mesmerizing effect. Matrixxman hones in on the duo’s darker undertones and takes the track into deeper and ominous territory, a constant digital array of bleeps and blips as if being emitted from a combination of analytical machines.

The band returns to the UK for a headlining show at London’s Village Underground on the 26th of November, following their extensive US tour throughout the autumn. See full tour dates below.

Days Gone By will be out September 18, 2015 on Domino. Preorder the album via iTunes HERE and via Dom Mart HERE.

JULIA HOLTER STREAMS NEW SONG ‘SEA CALLS ME HOME’

Julia Holter | 26/08/15

Image: Julia Holter image - photo credite Tonje Thilesen

With the highly anticipated release of her fourth full-length Have You In My Wilderness on 25th September, Julia Holter has today released the second song to be heard from the new album in ‘Sea Calls Me Home’

Of the track, Holter says: “'Sea Calls Me Home' is about moving away from things that trap you, the scary wonder in discovering freedom.”

Have You In My Wilderness will be available on CD (WIGCD341), Digital (WIG341D) and LP (WIGLP341). For a very limited period the vinyl LP will come with a photographic print signed by the artist, via Dom Mart only. The album is available to pre-order with an instant grat of both ‘Feel You’ and ‘Sea Calls Me Home’. Pre-order from Dom Mart HERE and iTunes HERE.

The album tracklisting is as follows:

BILL RYDER-JONES TO RELEASE NEW ALBUM, ‘WEST KIRBY COUNTY PRIMARY’, ON 6TH NOVEMBER 2015

Bill Ryder-Jones | 25/08/15

Image: Bill R-J West Kirby Announce

We are pleased to announce that West Kirby County Primary, the third full-length album from multi-instrumentalist, producer and composer, Bill Ryder-Jones, will be released on 6th November 2015.

The follow-up to A Bad Wind Blows In My Heart was written and recorded by Ryder-Jones in his childhood bedroom at his mother’s house in West Kirby before being filtered through Liverpool’s legendary Parr Street Studios.

Two To Birkenhead is the first single to be shared from the album. The accompanying video was filmed by James Slater (Jamie T, Major Lazer) in and around Bill’s mother’s house in The Wirral. Watch it now.

Bill Ryder-Jones will be performing live throughout the UK in November with a date at The Lexington in London on 11th November. He is also performing as a special guest to Spector on their UK October tour. Full dates with ticket links are as follows:

24th October – Sheffield – The Leadmill *

25th October – Leeds – Brudenell Social Club *

27th October – Brighton – Patterns (formerly Audio) *

28th October – Oxford – 02 Academy *

29th October – London – Heaven *

7th November - Glasgow - Hug and Pint

9th November - Newcastle - Cluny 2

11th November - London - Lexington

13th November - Manchester - Gullivers

14th November - Liverpool - District

* with Spector

West Kirby County Primary will be available on CD (WIGCD346), Digital (WIG346D) and LP (WIGLP346). There will also be a Dom Mart and indie shop exclusive Deluxe LP (WIGLP346X) which comes with a bonus 7” featuring two exclusive new tracks. Pre-order the Deluxe Vinyl edition on Dom Mart and for a very limited period also receive a signed and numbered photo-print taken from the stage at this year’s Green Man Festival. PANDA BEAR'S 'CROSSWORDS' EP; LISTEN TO "NO MANS LAND"

Panda Bear | 20/08/15

Image: Crosswords EP

Today, we're happy to announce Panda Bear’s latest five track collection, Crosswords EP. It sees wind in his sails as we follow him on his next wide-eyed quantum leap from this year’s acclaimed album Panda Bear Meets the Grim Reaper with the escalator firmly jammed on UP.

Crosswords EP is digitally out today, and physically on CD & 12” on November 13, 2015. All pre-orders from the Animal Collective Mart or Domino Mart come with an instant download of the five track Crosswords EP in MP3, 16-bit or 24-bit WAV files. Listen to "No Mans Land" below.

On Crosswords EP, Noah Lennox bequeaths five fresh and finely observed body-pop wonders - three new songs: “No Mans Land,” “Jabberwocky” and “Cosplay”  - and two re-castings of previous ore  - "The Preakness" - previously heard in spirited demo form on 2012's Tomboy LP boxset  -  and the whole shebang treasure-topped with a fresh take on his PBVSGR soul tour de force “Crosswords.”

Logic would appear to dictate, that if the collective noun for Ravens is a Wake, the collective noun for Panda Bear songs might surely be an Honesty.

The EP explores Noah Lennox's alchemical use of earthy base elements and life affirming ‘reports from the front’ to conjure up his trademark transports to the Goldilock's zone and comes appropriately enveloped in eye-popping fashion with artwork by Swiss artist Marco Papiro and with custom type-faces by Black Dice's Bjorn Copeland.

Aided on studio production duties by Sonic Boom, the five EP tracks take us tumbling down the metaphorical rabbit hole once more… as Noah's latest Adventures in Wonderland continue .

The effects are instant. Mighty morphing power arrangements emerge blinking from flick-flack intros that you'd swear were aided and abetted by the Mad Hatter himself. Time-lapse transitions spin past with a ‘blink and you'll miss it’ accuracy. Caffeinated rhythms, filtered from an apparently over-sized and uniquely patinated pot, spill out throughout. Zero point shudders of synthesized springs conspire with globular spongiform basslines, bustling at the seams. All circled by a hovering confidence of voices, oblivious to the chaos surrounding, conducting the controlled confusion of the improbably arranged tones and textures  - like Space Family Robinson yodels for the 21st century.

The Crosswords EP follows on the release of the PBVSGR Remixes EP compiling remixes from Pete Rock, Andy Stott and more.

Panda Bear’s Crosswords EP tracklisting:
1. Crosswords (EP mix)
2. No Mans Land
3. Jabberwocky
4. The Preakness
5. Cosplay

Love Songs For Robots was recorded at Capitol Studios in Los Angeles and Pierre Marchand Studio in Montreal. Of the record, some of which debuted at private concerts in small loft spaces, Watson explains, “I wanted to make a science fiction R n’ B meets Vangelis erotica with a zest of folk kind of record.” It was only halfway through writing the record when the artist found himself having, by his own submission, “a bad year” did more personal themes begin to creep in. “I started thinking about how emotional reactions were more mechanical than we think and the only thing left between us and artificial intelligence is the act of inspiration. Just food for thought.” Watch the official video for “Places You Will Gohere and see below for track listing.

Love Songs For Robots is available on iTunes. The vinyl edition comes with an additional 7”, featuring a non-album track, and can be found along with the CD on the Domino Mart.

ALEX G ANNOUNCES NEW ALBUM BEACH MUSIC RELEASED 9TH OCTOBER, STREAM NEW SONG 'BUG' NOW, ANNOUNCES UK AND EUROPEAN TOUR DATES

Alex G | 13/08/15

Image: Alex G press shot - photo credit Jeff Allen

Philadelphia’s Alex Giannascoli aka Alex G is pleased to announce his forthcoming new full-length album and his first for Domino, Beach Music, on October 9, 2015.  Listen to the album’s debut track ‘Bug’ below and get more info on the album here www.sandyalexg.com

Beach Music was written and recorded in Giannascoli’s apartment, between the Fall of 2014 and the Spring of 2015, during breaks from touring with the likes of Speedy Ortiz, Cymbals Eat Guitars and Elvis Depressedly. It’s not something I do intentionally, but I’m the common thread."

Beach Music is available to pre-order now on limited edition deluxe coloured vinyl with exclusive Alex G Live at The Headroom bootleg LP, limited edition cassette (exclusive to Bandcamp), CD, and digital download.
