We are delighted to announce that VillagersDarling Arithmetic has been nominated in the category Album Award, at this year’s Ivor Novello Awards.

Conor O’Brien previously won the ‘Best Song Musically and Lyrically’ Ivor Novello Award in 2011, for his track ‘Becoming A Jackal’ taken from the debut album of the same name.

Released in April 2015, Darling Arithmetic is the third full length album from Villagers. O’Brien wrote, recorded, produced and mixed the album at his home – the loft of a converted farmhouse that he shares in the coastal town of Malahide, north of Dublin. It was a more pared-back, intimate journey compared to the multi-faceted arrangements of 2010’s Becoming A Jackal and 2013’s {Awayland} and revealed a single-minded artist at the peak of his already considerable songwriting powers.

Previously nominated twice for the Mercury Music Prize and winner of Ireland’s Choice Music Prize, O’Brien is currently working on his fourth album.

Villagers will be playing a string of festivals this summer across Europe and North America.

The Kills | 18/04/16

Image: Heart Of A Dig video still

The Kills have unveiled the second music video from their highly anticipated fifth album, Ash & Ice. Heart Of A Dog” premiered on the Coachella festival live stream immediately before the band’s blistering energetic performance on Friday evening. The video was directed by Sophie Muller who has worked with the band in the past (“U.R.A Fever,” “Cheap and Cheerful,” “Last Days of Magic” and “Satellite”). Ash & Ice will be released on June 3rd through Domino.

The band adds: We are very very especially pleased to release our new music video for “Heart of A Dog!” It was shot all day and into the night in Los Angeles by our dear friend, the tremendous talent, Sophie Muller. We love this video. We love it because it’s fucking fun. Muscle cars and backflips. Palms trees and cacti. Dogs and dice. Neon and sunshine. We hope you love it as much as we do. VROOM VROOM. Love, The Kills.

Over their almost decade-and-a-half career, The Kills have released four records. Each one a restless, reckless enigmatic art statement that bristled with tension, anxiety, sex, unstudied cool and winking ennui, yet not one of them sounded like the previous one. Ash & Ice is the follow up to 2011’s critically lauded Blood Pressures and was five years in the making.

The Kills’ forthcoming European run in May is now sold out.  The band will be returning in the autumn, for shows including London’s Roundhouse on the 7th of October  - general on-sale for the new dates is on Friday at 10am CET. All dates are listed below.

Your Friend | 15/04/16

Your Friend is currently wrapping up a tour with Porches and Alex G in support of her debut album, Gumption, out now on Domino.  Ahead of her last week on the road in the United States, The FADER has premiered a new video for title track, “Gumption,” directed by Dan Huiting.

On the video’s concept, Huiting explains, “When I first heard this song I immediately had two images come into my mind. One was person trudging through the snow from overhead, and second was an overhead shot of that person stopping in front of a burning car. There's something about fire that is so mesmerizing to me.”

Taryn Miller aka Your Friend elaborates on the making of the “Gumption” video, “"I feel really fortunate to have worked with Dan. I've been a fan of his work for a long time. It was wild getting to see the fire footage after the fact since I was facedown in the ice for those shots. It was painfully cold but I would get hit with this wave of heat as the flames grew and it felt amazing in this strange way. In that, I couldn't see but only experience it physically."

The trio of Yorkston/Thorne/Khan return with the beautiful new ‘Broken Wave Live’ EP.  The tracks on the EP are taken from the Broken Wave Live sessions recorded at The Square studio in east London. These sessions afforded the band an opportunity to showcase poignant live versions of three songs from the band’s acclaimed debut album ‘Everything Sacred’.

Lead track ‘Broken Wave (A Blues For Doogie)’ is James Yorkston’s tribute to Doogie Paul– a powerful, tender lament to his old bass player and friend. You can watch the Liam Saint Pierre directed video for the song, shot at The Square during recording, HERE.   Jon Thorne then takes the lead on his yearning composition and album title track ‘Everything Sacred’, followed by the band’s sensitive reading of legendary songwriter and singer Lal Waterson’s ‘Song For Thirza’.

You can catch the band live at the following shows:

Quasi | 14/04/16

Image: Quasi Bundle

Domino are proud to reissue Quasi’s first three studio albums, 1997’s R&B Transmogrification, 1998’s Featuring “Birds” and 1999’s Field Studies on June 10th.

Stream R&B Transmogrification’s ‘Ballad of Mechanical Man’, Featuring “Birds”’s ‘The Poisoned Well’ and Field Studies ‘Birds’ here.

Some bands – not every band – hit a hot streak. A year or two, or three, where they can’t do wrong for doing right; where every song suggests another two; where all the mistakes are in tune and in time, and the bandmembers are finishing each other’s riffs and fills. Talking Heads, 1978–80. The Fall, 1979–82. Sonic Youth, 1986–88. Wu-Tang, 1994–97.

Quasi, 1997-1999: R&B Transmogrification, Featuring “Birds”, Field Studies.

Indie rock had seen power duos before: Guv’ner, Royal Trux, Buckingham-Nicks, the Carpenters – but they’d never sounded like Quasi. Drumming like a controlled detonation; mutant blues coming out of an electric harpsichord or guitar by turns. Backwards through the backwoods of AM pop and Pebbles psych to create a new form: bar-room baroque. Honey-golden multitracked vocals and some of the bleakest, black-eyed, black-hearted lyrics put to paper since Lou Reed woke up in a bad mood. And all played with the kind of ramshackle ease that only comes from weeks of practice, months in the van, and serious chops.

Janet Weiss and Sam Coomes first collaborated in 1990 as Motorgoat, but by 1993 they had become Quasi. These initial excursions would later be re-released as Early Recordings, but 1997’s R&B Transmogrification is where they define their double act. On drums and harmonies, Weiss is all low-key Bonham-ie, power with poise. On top Coomes’ Roxichord makes you wonder how the electronic harpsichord never took off, its low-end crunch with top notes sounding like Ray Manzarek with a Superfuzz. A treacherous lyrical undertow is always there, catching you as you sing along to sweet pop hooks about death, hopelessness – or the illusions of the atomic family on ‘Mama, Papa, Baby’: “One plus one plus one is nothing.” Yet musically Coomes and Weiss are always greater than the sum of their parts. They just fit together, like a two-piece jigsaw puzzle. You float out of R&B Transmogrification on the dislocated cosmic guitars of ‘Clouds’, a little transmogrified yourself.

From Weiss’s opening salvo, and the first action-painting splatter of Coomes’ keyboard on ‘Our Happiness is Guaranteed’, Featuring “Birds” is Quasi at their peak, melding jams-kicking rock’n’roll, punk action, and chord shifts that feel like the change of a season. The success of Weiss’s other group, Sleater-Kinney, in the meantime was clearly only firing up, rather than undercutting Quasi. The songs slide from science fictional dystopia on ‘Our Happiness is Guaranteed’ and ‘I Never Want to See You Again’, to wage-slave class war on ‘The Happy Prole’ and ‘Sea Shanty’. As for ‘It’s Hard to Turn Me On’ and ‘California’, how can songs about anhedonia, the inability to experience pleasure, feel so good? Mixing uppers and downers isn’t usually advised, but Weiss and Coomes use it to make a musical space that feels unique to Quasi.

Closing in on the millennium, both feet on the pedals, Field Studies arrives in 1999. Organ edges out the Roxichord, making for a sound less jagged and more floating – like the protagonist of ‘The Star You Left Behind’, drifting out into an infinite void.  Does Field Studies have an Elliott Smith turn to the harmonies? They do share that heady hit of sweet-sour power-pop – or maybe both Quasi and Smith have a Heatmiser influence, given that’s the Portland band that Coomes and Smith had played in together. As one of their biggest fans, ‘Clouds’ was one of Smith’s favourite live covers. And Smith plays bass on three of Field Studies’ tracks, returning the favour for the many live shows in which Weiss and Coomes were his backing group. “I live underground on the dark side of town”, sings Coomes, but Field Studies is brilliantly lit with tunes that positively glow, and if the settings and arrangements are little more orderly than Featuring “Birds”, it’s only to heighten those accents.

The rest is history: Sword of God, Hot Shit!, When the Going Gets Dark, American Gong, and, most recently in 2013, Mole City, the late-arriving Tusk of the American indie tradition, four sprawling sides of old joys and new directions. Don’t stop; never stop. “You won’t live long / but you may write the perfect song” sings Coomes on ‘The Poisoned Well’. Quasi wrote more than a few, so if you don’t know these three albums, come on in: your happiness is guaranteed.

These three seminal albums will be reissued on vinyl and CD plus will be available on all digital formats. All three albums are available packaged together exclusively through Domino Mart.

Image: White Lung

Fresh off of a victorious SXSW, White Lung release another stellar track off their upcoming fourth studio album Paradise, due out May 6th on Domino. Front woman Mish Barber-Way explains “’Kiss Me When I Bleed is about pride. That kind of steadfast, I-don't-give-a-fuck-I'm-in-love pride in that we all wish we had for someone. This song is my fairytale. Riches to rags and happily ever after because nothing else in this world really matters except love."

Listen to 'Kiss Me When I Bleed' here

Surprisingly, the track features no synthesizers – it’s all Kenny William’s guitar. He has reworked and re-pitched his parts resulting in what Annie Clark (St. Vincent) compares to evil mosquitoes - a bit off and unsettling.

This second cut, follows on from 'Hungry', which received 'Best New Track' from Pitchfork, who said "propelled by ringing guitars and Way's piercing vocals, the track is a tightly-wound, catchy-as-fuck invective played at a polished, breakneck velocity." Also, noting the band is "ostensibly teetering on the edge of a major breakthrough."

White Lung will tour extensively throughout Europe and North America this summer. Full list of tour dates below.

For the making of Paradise, vocalist Mish Barber-Way, guitarist Kenneth William and drummer Anne-Marie Vassiliou reconnected in Los Angeles to work with producer Lars Stalfors (HEALTH, Alice Glass). In October of 2015, White Lung spent a month in the studio, working closely with Stalfors to challenge what could be done with their songs. Bringing all the energy, unique guitar work and lyrical prowess the band are known for to the studio, White Lung curated their songs with a new pop sensibility, focusing in on making a record for the present - "I wanted a record that sounded like it was made in 2016", said William. Mixed by Stalfors and later mastered by Joe LaPorta, Paradise is their smartest, brightest songwriting yet.

Mish Barber-Way and Kenneth William sat down with Annie Clark aka St. Vincent to discuss the making of the album and their creative process. The entire conversation can be read here.

The Range | 22/03/16

Image: Photo credit Alexandra Gavillet

James Hinton’s The Range has shared the latest cut from forthcoming new album Potential, out March 25th on Domino, in the form of ‘Copper Wire’. Listen to it now below.

Hinton says of ‘Copper Wire’, which features vocals from a young London rapper called Kruddy Zak:

“I think a lot of my favorite lyrics on Potential allude to coming to terms with a difficult time in your life - that moment of acceptance when you finally allow yourself to drop your guard and admit you’ve been hit with something hard. Zak's verse has a piece in it that states '09 was emotional / it's a memory / I wish that everything was still the same' and that hit me particularly deeply as that was the year I lost my mom. Writing this song was the first time I ever talked about that moment in my music, and I think it was an important step in dealing with how I was feeling to finally get some words about it down on paper.”

Additionally, the track ‘1804’ featuring Jamaican rapper Naturaliss will be premiering tonight on Sun City Radio in Jamaica at 8:30pm Eastern Standard Time / 9:30pm Eastern Daylight Time.

As its backbone, the album Potential utilizes a series of vocal samples that Hinton found in the deep corners of YouTube. The new single, “Five Four”, finds Hinton exploring his love of early ’00s grime and mid ‘00s electronica while bringing it to a new sonic and emotional whole.  The music video, directed by Daniel Kaufman, features the London, UK-based grime MCs Ophqi and Superior Thought, the musicians from the original YouTube sourced clip that Hinton used to write and produce “Five Four.”

In addition to the forthcoming album Potential, a documentary titled Superimpose, directed by Daniel Kaufman, out this spring, will look at the human stories behind Ophqi, Superior Thought, and the other unknown artists included on the album. As Hinton states, “I am very conscious that these people who I have sampled elevate what I do, just as much as my record brings their work somewhere else.”
