Yorkston/Thorne/Khan | 03/11/15

Yorkston/Thorne/Khan release their collaborative debut album ‘Everything Sacred’ on Friday the 15th of January 2016.  Listen to their cover of Ivor Cutler’s ‘Little Black Buzzer’ featuring the trio joined by the superb and distinctive young Irish singer Lisa O’Neill below.

Yorkston/Thorne/Khan are an experimental group that includes James Yorkston, one of the most “influential singer/songwriters on the Scottish folk scene”, Suhail Yusuf Khan, award winning sarangi player and classical singer from New Delhi and Jon Thorne, best known as jazz double bass player with electro outfit Lamb.

This is Scottish-Irish-Indian-English music in the raw, Yorkston's familiar steel guitar strings pulled, pushed and bent into more unfamiliar acoustic drones, the bass dropping anchors through the floor. Rather than world music per se, this sounds more idiosyncratic, a temporary structure bivouacking by the side of the indie-folk, art music tradition, while its widening horizons extend back to the Sixties heyday of the Incredible String Band, and forward to this singular album's satellite orbit over the folk music, Indian classical and indie music of today – all these musical ley lines threaded into a new kind of eclectic, domestic setting.

“Playing together as Yorkston / Thorne / Khan, we tackle a wide array of different sounds and songs. Alongside pieces of our own, there’s a fair chunk of improvisation, plus covers of Ivor Cutler’s ‘Little Black Buzzer’ and Lal Waterson’s ‘Song For Thirza’. Jon’s jazz back-ground definitely comes to the fore, as does Suhail’s devotional singing and outstanding sarangi playing. I just do my best to keep up…” – James Yorkston

‘Everything Sacred’ will be available on CD (WIGCD367), Standard LP (WIGLP367), Deluxe LP (WIGLP367X) and digitally.  The Deluxe LP features a die cut sleeve with a bonus 7” featuring exclusive tracks ‘Peggio’ and ‘The Blues You Sang’ with download card.  You can pre-order the album  via Dom Mart HERE and iTunes HERE.

Many Moons, the debut solo album from Martin Courtney, is out now on Domino. The bright, lush, 10-song collection of soft psychedelia, which was previewed during a string of CMJ shows earlier this month, further cements the Real Estate frontman’s talent for writing deceptively affecting songs – jangly, melancholic jams touching on themes of past and present, loss and love, home and the heart.

Stream Many Moons here.

Today, Courtney is sharing a cover of Pavement’s ‘Major Leagues’. Recorded as part of a Sirius XMU session, the video can be viewed now below.

Bill Ryder-Jones is streaming acclaimed new album West Kirby County Primary in full ahead of its release on 6th November. Listen now via NPR First Listen.

Alongside the album stream, a new video for album track ‘Catharine and Huskisson’, directed by James Slater, is streaming now – watch the video below. The new video follows Slater’s videos for the albums lead single ‘Two To Birkenhead’ (watch HERE) and ‘Satellites’ (watch HERE).

West Kirby County Primary, the third full-length album from multi-instrumentalist, producer and composer, Bill Ryder-Jones, is the follow-up to A Bad Wind Blows In My Heart and was written and recorded by Ryder-Jones in his childhood bedroom at his mother’s house in West Kirby before being filtered through Liverpool’s legendary Parr Street Studios. A classic band record, West Kirby County Primary features Bill playing a multitude of instruments including the electric guitar with his trademark prowess.

Mixed by James Ford, each of West Kirby County Primary’s ten tracks offers a sneaked glance into his private world; they eavesdrop on a set of encounters that go about “turning stories into beautiful truth” set to glorious molten melody that explodes like fireworks over water. It all adds up to a remarkable record by one of our most cherished musicians – a musical polymath as at ease on stage with the Manchester Camerata (where he performed ‘If…’ as part of the Manchester Literature Festival last Autumn) or on live guitar duties with Arctic Monkeys as he is on production duties with Hooton Tennis Club and The Wytches.

The Bohicas | 27/10/15

Image: The Making Of - video still

The Bohicas have launched the action packed video for their new single ‘The Making Of’ – watch the video below.  Directed by Ozzie Pullin, the video features lead singer Dominic McGuinness dealing with a personal struggle of a very unique kind.

Pullin conceived the idea and worked with the band on how to pull it all together, enlisting McGuinness as the main protagonist.

"For me the concept is all about the battle we have with each other as individuals and I wanted to explore this idea in a kind of purgatory way, in that it's never ending. It's something we have to deal with through our lives. So when the band were keen on the concept, I knew we could make something special that we all were happy with. I couldn't have asked for more from the guys, they absolutely killed it, that completely shows in the final product", says director Pullin.

McGuinness’ acting debut made for epic behind the scenes viewing: “I basically got the crap kicked out of me by the stunt double all day as my bandmates watched on in hysterics. Luckily, it looks like I’m throwing all the punches in the final video so we did what we set out to do!”

It’s been a busy time for the band; recently nominated for Best New Act at the Q Awards, they are currently on the last leg of their UK and Europe headline tour. The band will also be heading back to Japan in November where they will play the Hostess Weekender in Tokyo and Osaka alongside the likes of Bloc Party, Mystery Jets and Daughter.

The Bohicas are rock and roll painted in vivid primary colours. Hi def, loud, fast and shiny. A barrage of killer hooks, razor blade riffs and choruses that slap you in the face, grab your hand and lead you onto the dance floor. All shot through with pulp imagery torn from the pages of a graphic novel.

Blood Orange | 27/10/15

Image: Blood Orange_Apollo Show Announce

Blood Orange – aka Devonté Hynes – today releases a new song, titled ‘Sandra’s Smile’, accompanied by a video shot last week in New York. Directed and edited by Hynes himself, and featuring cameos from Junglepussy, Ian Isiah, and Waffle Crew, the ‘Sandra’s Smile’ video can be seen below.

Blood Orange will perform his first U.S. show of 2015 on December 12, 2015 when he returns to the stage at Harlem’s World Famous Apollo Theater in NYC alongside a cast of friends and collaborators.

The show at Harlem’s World Famous Apollo Theater will feature not only music from Hynes’ critically acclaimed first two albums under the Blood Orange moniker, but will also include the live debut of brand new Blood Orange material.

All proceeds from the show will benefit the Opus 118 Harlem School of Music, a program that transforms the lives of their students and families through access to quality music education both in-school and after-school.

Says Hynes, “Playing music saved my life; if it wasn't for the chance to play cello or piano when I was a kid growing up in Essex, I shudder to think where I'd be right now. At this point in my life, all that matters to me is giving back to communities and making people happy, so I have decided to put on a fun night of performances at the legendary Apollo Theatre in Harlem that is hopefully affordable to all, with all proceeds going to the Opus 118 Harlem School of Music.  New York City, let's have some fun!"

Villagers | 19/10/15

Image: Villagers WHYBAML packshot

Where Have You Been All My Life?, released on 8th January 2016, is a collection of songs that distils five years and three albums of Villagers’ songwriting into one flowing narrative.

Recorded in one day at London’s RAK Studio with Richard Woodcraft (Radiohead, The Last Shadow Puppets) and Villagers live engineer Ber Quinn, the album is a re-imagining of older material seamlessly woven with present glories from Villagers’ most recent studio album, Darling Arithmetic.

Released in April 2015, Conor O’Brien’s third album under the guise of Villagers was a more pared-back, intimate journey compared to the multi-faceted arrangements of Becoming A Jackal (2010) and {Awayland} (2013). This fresh approach was extended on subsequent Villagers tours, where old songs were reinvented to match the new. Then for one day in July 2015, 18 songs were quickly captured and 12 songs chosen for the final album, making it Villagers’ most intense, but satisfying, session to date. These recordings are all first or second takes, and the immediacy of the occasion was part of the magic that day, live and unadorned by overdubs or studio trickery.

The unique nature of these arrangements is due in no small part to the musicians in the room at the time of recording: Cormac Curran on grand piano and analogue synthesizer, Danny Snow on double bass, Mali Llywelyn on harp, mellotron and vocals, and Gwion Llewelyn on drums, flugelhorn and vocals. The result is a lush, harmony-laden and vibrant document of a time and a place.

Included in the album is a new recording of ‘Memoir’, which O’Brien wrote for Charlotte Gainsbourg; it can be found on her 2011 album Stage Whisper, but has never before been recorded as a live cut by Villagers until now.

‘Where Have You Been All My Life?’ will be available on LP (WIGLP368), CD (WIGCD368), Digital (WIG368D) and Deluxe LP (green coloured vinyl  with two bonus tracks on the download card, ‘Pieces’ & ‘No-one to Blame’). Pre-order the album from Dom Mart HERE and iTunes HERE.

Cass McCombs | 13/10/15

Image: Cass McCombs photo credit Pony Cassels

December 11th marks the release of A Folk Set Apart: Rarities, B-Sides & Space Junk, Etc., an alternate retelling of the last decade in the life of extraordinary songwriter Cass McCombs.

Comprising songs from 2003-2014, the album showcases McCombs’ thematic and emotional diversity. A black mirror to his catalogue, there are varying moments of reflection, madness, and dark humor. Also of politics - “Bradley Manning,” which debuted on Democracy Now, is a modern folk ballad of the convicted Army whistleblower, and directly quotes Manning’s own Facebook posts. McCombs has a unique ability to stitch together ancient techniques with our current primitive mind.

For all their differences, this collection of songs reveals the artist as navigator of avoidance. They have been unearthed from the so-called underground - culled from the various limited, rare sources from which they were initially released on different independent labels on both sides of the pond, now compiled by Domino. For the past decade, most of these have been next to impossible to find, and for the first time are now readily available. Many were first unveiled as split 7”s, only sold at shows, whose artist pairings are as diverse as McCombs’ own musical tendencies: e.g. Meat Puppets (“Evangeline,” “Night of the World”), Michael Hurley (“Three Men Sitting On A Hollow Log”) and White Magic (“If You Loved Me Before”).

McCombs is a perennial favorite of many acclaimed musicians - as evidenced by the broad range of guests who appear on the tracks: Mike Gordon (Phish) co-wrote and lent his unmistakable vocal to the bizarre experiment, “Texas”; PREfection-era drummer, Tim Dewit aka Dutch E. Germ (Gang Gang Dance) on “A.Y.D.”; drummer Joe Russo (Furthur) on “Evangeline” and “Night Of The World”; Chris Cohen (Deerhoof) plays guitar on “Poet’s Day” and “An Other”; Tim Cedar (from noise/punk band Ligament) drums on “Twins”; among many other anti-heroes from the musical underground, proving community defies classification.

Parallel universes obviously exist, but where are they before we experience them? The occult world stalks us until the final coup-de-gras. But McCombs is not a mystic but a brutal realist, exposing himself warts and all, in the punk tradition.

These songs will both satiate and perplex those already familiar with McCombs, while compelling and rewarding new listeners, pointing a way towards his back catalog. It’s a glimpse behind the studio curtain at one of the greatest songwriters of the 21st Century. True trash esoterica.

A Folk Set Apart includes 19 songs (19 on CD, 11 on LP + 8 digital bonus tracks) all remastered for this release. Five of these songs are previously unreleased. The LP is a single vinyl in a gatefold jacket, which includes a printed inner sleeve and an MP3 download card.

Pre-order via Dom Mart or iTunes.

McCombs will be playing a string of US dates in the coming weeks. October sees him open for Kurt Vile on the West Coast, and November he’ll be opening for My Morning Jacket on one night of their four-night run at New York’s famed Beacon Theatre. Details below.

We're proud to share another track, from the forthcoming debut solo album from Real Estate songwriter and frontman Martin Courtney, titled Many Moons, out October 30, 2015. The wistful, elegantly arranged "Airport Bar" deals with the yearning for loved ones whilst away from home, and displays again Courtney’s deft hand in songwriting, and his move towards more personal lyrics on this solo album. Listen to the track below.

This track follows the release of previously shared tracks "Vestiges" and "Northern Highway."

Martin Courtney has also announced his first band shows during CMJ in New York this week, appearing at events for the Fader, KEXP, WFUV, Brooklyn Vegan, and Urban Outfitters. All details below.

Many Moons will be released on CD, standard and limited edition LP. The limited edition LP (of 500) is available to pre-order now from Domino Mart and contains an alternate cover with an embossed jacket featuring an artist logo designed by Robert Beatty, layout by Rob Carmichael of SEEN and coke-bottle clear color vinyl. All pre-orders from Domino or iTunes include instant downloads of "Airport Bar," "Northern Highway," and "Vestiges."

Alex G’s new album, Beach Music, is out today and in celebration, he’s pleased to share the video for Beach Music standout ‘Kicker’. Directed by John Vizzone, a previous collaborator (on DSU’s ‘Hollow’ video), the video has a distinctly 90s feel whilst also simultaneously feeling very Alex G.

Beach Music was written and recorded in Alex G’s apartment between the Autumn of 2014 and the Spring of 2015, and is the prolific songwriter’s seventh full length in five years. The first three singles, ‘Bug’, ‘Salt’ and ‘Kicker’, were greeted with genuine enthusiasm and loads of emojis from fans, making Beach Music one of the most anticipated albums of the year.

Porches | 08/10/15

Image: Porches - press shot

Porches is the proliferation of Aaron Maine’s love affair with music. Never quite landing in any particular niche, Maine navigates through genres, learning, obsessing, and absorbing. Great victories and great defeats, cosmic or tangible, are the underlying elements that remain constant through his music.

Today, Maine has released the first song from his anticipated forthcoming album, the first via his new home at Domino. The track, titled “Hour”, streaming below now, features Frankie Cosmos, Maine’s long time musical and life collaborator. Together their voices weave through the layers of synth and keyboards, pulsing at every turn. The song touches on the music Maine is known for, with his previous releases on Double Double Whammy, Exploding In Sound and Terrible Records, but also shows a progression and maturity for an artist who has delivered his strongest work to date.

Porches will be playing CMJ in New York next week including stops at the FADER, Ad Hoc, Brooklyn Vegan and Terrible Records events. Maine and his band will also play at the special invite only Domino showcase on Wednesday October 14th. Porches will then head to Iceland Airwaves festival in November before a London headline show at Moth Club on Monday November 9th.
