LA PRIEST ANNOUNCES DEBUT ALBUM, INJI

30/04/15

Image: LA Priest announcement

Inji, released on 29th June 2015, is the debut solo album by Sam Dust, AKA LA PRIEST. Across its ten audaciously imaginative tracks, Inji reasserts Dust as a truly idiosyncratic voice in British music, applying the same frantically eclectic, mischievous and wilfully absurd spirit of his previous band, the beloved Late of the Pier, to ever more nuanced and affecting songwriting and composition. Listen to the single, “Party Zute / Learning To Love”, also released on June 29th 2015, now.

Recorded over a reclusive period spanning five years following the disbandment of Late of the Pier in which Dust travelled the world, did scientific research, worked on the creation of a number of new inventions and produced several secret musical projects, Inji is a record that has its own logic and exists in its own time zone.

From the obscene space-age stadium rock guitar solo of "Oino", the maddeningly catchy digi-dub single that Dust leaked sample-by-sample on a suitably enigmatic website at the turn of the year (watch the video HERE), to "Learning To Love", the record's gargantuan, eight minute long prog-house centrepiece and "Occasion", a melting martian Prince come-on, Inji confounds and delights in equal measure and at every turn.

"Lady's In Trouble With The Law" boasts a lithe, sensual soul chorus about getting arrested that feels at once haunted and horny whilst the insectoid instrumental ambience of "Lorry Park", twists and turns and burrows into the brain as creepily as the most classic Aphex Twin material. Elsewhere, "Fabby", another instrumental, juxtaposes a gorgeous, cascading piano figure that'd make Benjamin Britten proud with percussion that sounds like the clashing of two swords and album closer, the bubbling, aquamarine ballad "Mountain" finds Dust contorting his voice into a stratospherically high, androgynous falsetto.

Throughout all the songs there's a reliance on feeling and intimation as opposed to any one lyrical theme, and although the notion of love, its joys and trials, heaviness and absurdity, can often be glimpsed, it's in a non-linear way that recalls the disruptive, deliberately misleading pop of artists such as David Sylvian, Arthur Russell and David Byrne. So when Dust opines "was I born to love you?" on "Mountain", it's just as likely to be about the titular mountain, or his dog, or the entire world itself, or nothing at all as it is any real object of romantic affection.

If it doesn’t conform it’s because it’s not supposed to.

Inji will be available on CD (WIGCD344), LP with download code (WIGLP344), Deluxe LP with download code (WIGLP344x) & Digital (WIG344D) with an instant grat of ‘Oino’ and ‘Party Zute / Learning To Love’. Pre-order the album through Dom Mart HERE and through iTunes HERE.

FRANCOIS & THE ATLAS MOUNTAINS TO PLAY DAVID BYRNE'S MELTDOWN FESTIVAL

Fránçois & the Atlas Mountains | 28/04/15

Image: Francois1

David Byrne: award-winning music legend, Talking Heads frontman, serial collaborator and now Meltdown curator has invited Francois & The Atlas Mountains and L’homme Tranquille guest musicians Djiga Boubacar and Sanou Darra to join him and a wealth of artists including Anna Calvi and Matthew Herbert this August at London’s Southbank Centre. Francois & The Atlas Mountains will be performing tracks from African EP L’homme Tranquille on August 25th at Queen Elizabeth Hall, Southbank Centre.

David Byrne said: "I am beyond excited at how much of this has fallen into place. It’s quite eclectic and I hope there are some new discoveries for everyone – including me – in this edition of the festival’

In the summer of 2013, Francois & The Atlas Mountains took a 10 day trip to Africa to tour and meet up with local musicians, with the intention of collaborating. In Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, Francois jammed with Papa Djiga Boubacar (on ngoni), Luc Kyenbreogo (bass ngoni) and Sanou Darra (balaphon) at the French Cultural Center, building on some simple compositions Francois had already prepared that later blossomed into ‘Ayan Filé’:

"’Ayan Filé came from a spontaneous jam. I started singing words about feeling spaced out as a European traveller landing in Africa. To which Sanou joined in by singing a line from a traditional Burkinabé tune that said ‘Look at us, we're arriving, pay attention to us’.

“We had a soundcard and a few microphones with us. We plugged them in to the computer and recorded all the instruments live. Because these musicians are so skilled and inventive we only did 2 or 3 takes for each songs.”

-       Francois Marry

Francois’ existing obsession with African music led to this excursion and what emerged became L’homme Tranquille, a four-track EP recorded across Ethopia, Burkina Faso, Senegal and Benin.

Earlier this year, the EP was launched via an interactive website built with Le Monde to celebrate the launch of its new African channel. The site is now accessible in both English and French and acting as a creative and interactive tour diary, it features a range of candid photographs, information and band illustrations documenting their time in Africa. As vibrant and engaging as the EP itself, it’s a great insight into the band’s time away.

Explore L’homme Tranquille with Le Monde HERE

Francois & The Atlas Mountains will be performing at David Byrne’s Meltdown on August 25th at Queen Elizabeth Hall, Southbank Centre, London. Tickets will be available on May 6th at 10am to Southbank Centre members and on May 8th at 10am to the general public. More information can be found HERE.

L’homme Tranquille will be available on 12” vinyl (RUG638T) and available to download (RUG638D). Order via iTunes HERE and Dom Mart HERE.

Matthew E. White | 22/04/15

Image: Matthew E White Fresh Blood

'Feeling Good Is Good Enough' is the endlessly enjoyable new single from Fresh Blood (impact date May 18th) a heartfelt and deeply infectious tune that is soaked in White's affable charisma. Formed of intricate piano and soaring strings, it's a spring staple that'll have you hooked on its sing-along chorus for a long time to come. Accompanying the song is a new video, which features behind-the-scenes footage of White's extraordinary show with a 30-piece orchestra at BRIC Arts Media House in Brooklyn, New York.

Richmond, Virginia-based singer, bandleader and modern soul visionary Matthew E. White released his second album Fresh Blood to critical acclaim earlier this year, which has been lauded as being "calibrated for maximum hot-buttered gorgeousness" by the Evening Standard in a 5/5 review, as well as being described as "transcendentally beautiful" by The Independent on Sunday.

Matthew E. White will play Green Man Festival over the weekend of 20 - 23 August.

OWEN PALLETT DEBUTS NEW VIDEO THE SKY BEHIND THE FLAG

Owen Pallett | 16/04/15

Image: Sky Behind The Flag

OWEN PALLETT debuts a brand new video clip from his critically acclaimed In Conflict album. Directed by Eno Swinnen, the captivatingly animated video holds the already vivid narrative of "The Sky Behind The Flag" against an entirely different context, a sort of intergalactic missed connection all of which leaves the viewer to glean one's own personal meaning from the juxtaposition.

The video premiered yesterday with The Fader here, and Pallett said this of the song: "The song is about how great distance can exist between things that appear to be very close, like two lovers, or two halves of a brain: the extrovert that is engaging with the world, and the introvert that is providing commentary."

Pallett is currently on tour in mainland Europe and will be performing at Field Day in London on June 6th, before touring in North America. All tour dates are below. For tickets, head here.

In Conflict is full of love songs— more specifically, songs about liminal states and our loved ones locked in battle with them.  “The record is meant to approach ‘insanity’ in a positive way,” Owen says— emphasis on the ironizing scare quotes around singular notions of insanity.  “Depression, addiction, gender trouble, and the creative state are presented as positive, loveable, empathetic ways of being.  Not preferable, per se, but all as equal, valid positions that we experience, which make us human.”  Watch the album trailer for In Conflictfeaturing illuminating liner notes in an alpine landscape, HERE.

In Conflict is available on CD, digitally, standard edition LP, and on limited edition double LP (with 3 bonus tracks), through Dom Mart. You may order the album HERE.

WATCH PANDA BEAR'S "TROPIC OF CANCER" VIDEO; ON TOUR IN US NOW

Panda Bear | 08/04/15

Image: Panda Bear by Tonje Thilesen

Panda Bear is proud to present the video for ‘Tropic Of Cancer’, from the recently-released, critically acclaimed album Panda Bear Meets The Grim Reaper. The Dave Portner (of Animal Collective)-directed video, in which many of the album's leitmotifs - family, the animal kingdom, death’s inevitability – are touched on in arrestingly beautiful color.

Says Portner of the video: "Its always been in the spirit of Animal Collective to want to collaborate in many artistic ways with each other. Having been a fan of Noah’s music since we were teenagers, it’s sweet to finally be able to collaborate with him on something other than just making sounds and songs. I also am thankful to get my first shot at making something a little more long running in the visual/video world. This is one of my favorite songs on the record, hence my being involved with it. I’m grateful and excited to have worked on every moment of it and to have worked with all the sweet people who helped me put it together."

THE BOHICAS SET TO RELEASE NEW SINGLE, WHERE YOU AT

The Bohicas | 07/04/15

Image: Bohicas where you at

After tearing through their homeland on the ‘Swarm Over Essexxx’ tour and impressing as guests to Royal Blood and Drenge, The Bohicas are now set to release their next single ‘Where You At’ which impacts on June 1st.

Produced by Mark Rankin, ‘Where You At’ is an insistent blast of re-energised rock ‘n’ roll which is delivered  with a rhythmic rush of melody and frontman Dominic McGuinness’s coolly understated vocals. ‘Where You At’ follows their recent tracks ‘To Die For’ and XXX’, ‘Swarm’ as The Bohicas continue to snap up disparate elements from the history of guitar music and forge them into something urgent and refreshing.

The accompanying video, directed by Chris Turner, captures the band in their natural element with a stripped-back performance which captures the attitude and exuberance of their live shows.

For 'Where You At' we eschewed all narrative and conceptual tropes in favour of creating a simple yet stylish and energetic performance video to capture what The Bohicas do best - play. When a band and track are this good I felt it muddied the waters to do anything else.” – Chris Turner

You can buy ‘Where You AtHERE and listen to it HERE.

This month sees The Bohicas commence their first ever residency. They’ll play The Deep Hum At The Heart Of It All club night at The Social on four consecutive Wednesdays – April 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th - alongside special guests and Domino DJs.

FFS (FRANZ FERDINAND AND SPARKS) ANNOUNCE SELF-TITLED DEBUT ALBUM RELEASED JUNE 8TH

FFS | 31/03/15

Image: FFS

FFS – the unique collaboration between Franz Ferdinand and Sparks - have announced details of the release of their self-titled album on Monday June 8th 2015 on Domino.

The first single will be released in April – details to follow shortly. In the meantime FFS are slaking fans’ thirst by previewing the album’s closing track ‘Piss Off’, fittingly the first song written for the album and the first song now to be heard in its entirety.

Listen to ‘Piss Off’ HERE

FFS, the album, is available on CD and download and also as 16 track double vinyl + limited edition double colour vinyl special edition & deluxe CD editions featuring the extra tracks ‘So Many Bridges’, ‘King Of The Song’, ‘Look At Me’ and ‘A Violent Death’.  You can pre-order FFS via DomMart and iTunes.

Produced by Grammy-award winner John Congleton (St Vincent, David Byrne, Anna Calvi) and recorded at London’s RAK Studios, the tracklisting of the 12-track album is as follows:

1.   Johnny Delusional

2.   Call Girl

3.   Dictator’s Son

4.   Little Guy From The Suburbs

5.   Police Encounters

6.   Save Me From Myself

7.   So Desu Ne

8.   The Man Without A Tan

9.   Things I Won’t Get

10. The Power Couple

11. Collaborations Don’t Work

12. Piss Off

The seed of FFS was sown around the time of Franz’s debut album when word got back to the Maels that the band were big Sparks fans. “We thought ‘Take Me Out’ was very cool, and wouldn’t it be nice to say hello when they came to Los Angeles?” recalls Russell Mael. “We met and decided then it would be great to do something together. We put forward a couple demos, one was ‘Piss Off’. But they got swept up by everything, and it didn’t happen at that time.”

Fast-forward to 2013 when both Sparks and Franz Ferdinand appeared at Coachella. On the day of Sparks’ warm-up show in San Francisco, Kapranos was in the city trying to locate a dentist when he heard a voice behind him: “’Alex, is that you?’ It was Ron and Russell. They invited us down to see them play that night. We said hello after, and everyone agreed that the 10-year gestation period for this idea was long enough------- we should try and make it happen now.”

FFS was recorded during an intense 15-day period in late 2014. “We approached it the way bands do with their first record,” says Kapranos. “We had the songs first, rehearsed them and then recorded it all together, in a room. So no hanging around or fannying about.”

Very much a ‘new’ project, FFS doesn’t truly sound like either band, but a striking and fascinating mutation. “The real motivation was to make something new, not ‘Franz featuring Russell Mael’, or ‘Sparks with Franz Ferdinand backing them,” says Alex Kapranos.

“You can’t chart what is Sparks and what is Franz Ferdinand,” suggests Ron Mael. “I think each band unconsciously relinquished a little of who they were in order to enter new territory.”

FFS also play a handful of UK dates on their European tour this summer, including an appearance at this year’s Edinburgh International Festival.

LA PRIEST ANNOUNCES UK & EUROPEAN TOUR DATES, LONDON SHOW AT ELECTROWERKZ ON 28TH APRIL

LA Priest | 31/03/15

Image: LA PRIEST

We are pleased to announce that Sam Dust AKA LA PRIEST will be playing live in the UK and Europe in the coming months. The tour will kick off with a date at Electrowerkz in London on 28th April and will follow with appearances at The Great Escape, Field Day and Iceland Airwaves with more dates TBA.  Full live dates are as follows:

Tue 28 Apr 2015 UK London Electrowerkz

Mon 04 May 2015 UK Manchester Sounds from the Other City Festival at Islington Mill

Thu 14 May 2015 UK Brighton The Great Escape at The Haunt

Sat 06 Jun 2015 UK London Field Day

Fri 03 Jul 2015 Netherlands Amsterdam Pitch Festival

Wed 04 Nov 2015 Iceland Reykjavik Iceland Airwaves

LA PRIEST (pronounced ‘Lah Pree-st’) is a project from reclusive electronic musician Sam Dust. Having previously used the moniker for a 12" release on Erol Alkan's Phantasy label in 2007, ‘Oino’, Dust's new single, is the first material to surface from the artist since the hiatus of Late Of The Pier, his previous band, in 2009.

Sam spent much of his time after 2010 in Greenland, studying the effects of the Ivittuut region's electro-magnetic phenomena on recorded sound, and producing more than five secret uncredited projects - some of which have already trickled out into the world to public acclaim.

Evoking the disruptive pop spirit of musicians like David Byrne, Prince, Arthur Russell or Aphex Twin, Dust's revived LA PRIEST project once again sets him apart as a true outlying original. ‘Oino’ marks the beginning of this long over-due re-emergence and is just a glimpse of the gloriously alluring hole in the fabric of the universe he's torn for himself.

The video for ‘Oino’ was shot by Dust’s brother, director Isaac Eastgate, during the pair’s travels recently and was “inspired by a story our grandad told us about a man imprisoned in the desert who escapes by singing to a wizard”, according to the artist. Watch it below.

GEORGIA SIGNS TO DOMINO, ‘MOVE SYSTEMS’ RELEASED AS FIRST SINGLE ON 25TH MAY 2015

Georgia | 31/03/15

Image: Georgia Press shot

Following its worldwide premiere on Radio 1, we are pleased to announce the first release from Domino’s latest signing - multi-instrumentalist, producer and songwriter, Georgia

Built on a truly monstrous rhythm section, ‘Move Systems’ (released as a single on 25th May 2015), is a frenetic,  forceful and hugely imaginative track – offering as much cerebral charm as it does pure physical impact in the way it channels elements of early 00’s grime, dub, post-punk and hip hop into a genuinely new-sounding, globally minded brand of pop. The accompanying video, directed by Rollo Jackson (Hot Chip, Angel Haze, Danny Brown), is available to view now below.

Born and raised in north west London, the last few years have seen Georgia steadily establish herself as an important fixture in the city's most singular and imaginative artistic circles, playing drums for Kwes and Kate Tempest among others before emerging as an irresistible creative force in her own right with last year's Come In EP.

Newly signed to Domino, Georgia is currently putting the final touches to her debut album which she entirely wrote, performed and self-produced - details of which will be announced soon.

Georgia will be performing live at this year’s The Great Escape in Brighton on May 15th, and as a special guest of Kelela at XOYO on May 26th. Further dates are to be announced.
