THE AMAZING SNAKEHEADS ANNOUNCE BRAND NEW SINGLE FOR DECEMBER 1ST, ‘ CAN’T LET YOU GO’

The Amazing Snakeheads | 03/10/14

Image: Dale Can't Let You Go

To coincide with their UK tour which starts this Sunday in Edinburgh, The Amazing Snakeheads will release a brand new track entitled ‘Can’t Let You Go’, on 1st December 2014. The track was recorded in London with the legendary producer, Clive Langer (Madness, The Teardrop Explodes, Elvis Costello, Morrissey) and is the first release since their debut album, Amphetamine Ballads, earlier this year.

‘Can’t Let You Go’ will be available on 1st December 2014 on 7” (RUG625) backed with another new track, ‘The Virgin Mary’. Pre-order it HERE. The track will also be available on the same date as a Digital Bundle (RUG625D1) with the tracks ‘The Virgin Mary’ and ‘Jesus Freaks 2’. ‘Can’t Let You Go’ is available Digitally now as a single track, HERE.

Following tour dates with Jack White and many festival appearances over the summer including a headline slot on the BBC Introducing stage at T In The Park, The Amazing Snakeheads are currently preparing for a full UK tour which includes their biggest London show to date at The Electric Ballroom on the 23rd October.

The band’s debut album, Amphetamine Ballads, which saw its UK release in April, was featured on Pitchfork as their Advance Stream to coincide with the US release. A monument to the redemptive powers of rock 'n' roll - full of rage, romance and dark humour - Amphetamine Ballads is an uncompromising, astonishingly visceral record. Purchase it from Dom Mart HERE or from iTunes HERE.

G STANDS FOR GO-BETWEENS: VOLUME 1 1978-1984

The Go Betweens | 01/10/14

Image: Go Betweens press shot B&W

The Domino Recording Company is honoured to announce the upcoming release of an extraordinary anthology for one of the most beloved and influential Australian groups of all-time, The Go-BetweensG Stands For Go-Betweens Volume One extensively documents the band’s origins in an ambitious box containing four vinyl albums, four compact discs and an extensive 112-page book, featuring a trove of archival photos and extensive historical liner notes from founding member Robert Forster, along with additional pieces from guest essayists, fans and contemporaries.

The box set captures the band’s output from 1978 through 1984 and includes the first vinyl re-pressings of their first three studio albums in over thirty years (Send Me A Lullaby, Before Hollywood & Spring Hill Fair), all re-mastered from the original analogue tapes. G Stands For Go-Betweens also brings together their early classic and collectible singles together on a fourth vinyl LP entitled The First Five Singles featuring new artwork from its creators. Additionally, the set comes with four compact discs of rare, hard-to-find and unreleased demos, recordings, radio sessions and a complete live concert radio broadcast from 1982. If that’s not enough, the set comes with a silkscreen of their first promotional poster for their debut single, “Lee Remick", as well as a reproduction of their very first press release from their own Able Label.

For a complete tracklist and in-depth information on this release, please visit the following: http://dominorecordco.com/gobetweens/

We will begin taking pre-orders for this very special limited edition release today and will continue to do so until October 31st.  While a very small overrun may be made available to a few select retail outlets at a later date, this is a deluxe limited package and we will only be pressing this very special collection once.  The only way to guarantee your own copy is to order from Domino Mart HERE.  The stock is estimated to be delivered to customers at the beginning of January.

But here’s the special part: the first 600 orders will get a randomly selected book from the late Grant McLennan’s personal literary collection along with a specially-printed bookmark signed by Robert Forster, certifying their veracity. These books were collected by Grant through his lifetime and some were signed and dated by him on purchase (though no guarantee that every book will have said inscription...it will be the luck of the draw). Recipients will be invited to join the Grant McLennan Book Club over at www.go-betweens.net to share anecdotes and book reports on the copies they receive.

The Go-Betweens were formed by Robert Forster and Grant McLennan in Brisbane, Australia in 1978 while studying at the University of Queensland. The duo, augmented by various drummers and guests, recorded a series of acclaimed singles for seminal Australian labels such as their own Able Label and Missing Link. After a sojourn to London and Glasgow that led to their brief relationship with the legendary Postcard label, they were joined by their more permanent rhythmic counterpart, drummer Lindy Morrison, upon their return home prior to recording their debut album, Send Me A Lullaby. That release brought them to the attention of Rough Trade and a lengthy re-location to London. It was then the band recorded their breakthrough album, Before Hollywood. Produced by John Brand (Aztec Camera, The Waterboys), the album contains some of the group’s most beloved recordings, including McLennan’s “Cattle And Cane” and Forster’s “By Chance”. Shortly thereafter, McLennan would hand off bass playing duties to new member Robert Vickers, who joined the group prior to the recording of Spring Hill Fair.

During their initial phase, the group went on to record three additional albums for Beggars Banquet before splitting up in 1989 in spite of their greatest commercial success with the album 16 Lovers Lane. Forster and McLennan went on to extensive solo careers before reuniting in 2000 and making three more Go-Betweens album together, including the ARIA-winning finalé, Oceans Apart. Sadly, the reunion came to a sudden end when McLennan passed away on May 6th, 2006 from a heart attack and The Go-Betweens disbanded for good.

It would be hard to overstate the shadows cast across the musical landscape of the last three decades by the Go-Betweens’ self-ascribed “striped sunlight sound”. The duo of McLennan and Forster ranks alongside the best of the best songwriting partnerships, influencing younger musicians both expected (such as Belle & Sebastian who reference the group on “Shoot The Sexual Athlete”) and unexpected (as with the late, great Jay Reatard’s fiery cover of “Don’t Let Him Come Back”). This anthology is sure to provide inspiration to a new generation of musicians while providing a very special personal experience for the existing fans.

JON HOPKINS ASLEEP VERSIONS EP 10TH NOVEMBER 2014

Jon Hopkins | 25/09/14

Image: Jon Hopkins Asleep still

Following a sold out, euphoric performance at The Royal Festival Hall last Friday, Jon Hopkins can announce the release of a 4 track EP, entitled Asleep Versions, on 10th November 2014.

Asleep Versions was recorded at Sundlaugin Studios, near Reykjavik, in February of this year. Intended to be heard as one single 25 minute piece, it is composed of four decelerated, dreamlike re-imaginings of tracks from the Mercury-nominated

Immunity. Representing the quieter, more meditative side of the album, these new explorations take its hypnotic, transcendent qualities to a far deeper level. At times almost painfully beautiful, the EP contains a new, semi-acoustic re-interpretation of album track Form By Firelight, featuring additional vocals from the Braids and Blue Hawaii lead vocalist, Raphaelle Standell.

Watch an animated trailer for the EP, designed and directed by Robert Hunter.

Asleep Versions will be available on 12" (RUG622T), CD (RUG622CD) & Digital(RUG622D). The tracklisting is as follows:

  1. Immunity (with King Creosote)

ANNA CALVI ONE BREATH NOMINATED FOR MERCURY MUSIC PRIZE 2014

Anna Calvi | 11/09/14

Image: One Breath

We are very pleased to announce that Anna Calvi has been nominated for the Mercury Music Prize for her critically acclaimed second album, One Breath. Anna’s eponymous debut album also picked up a nomination for the coveted prize in 2011.

Produced by John Congleton in Blackbox Studios, France and mixed in Dallas, Texas, USA, One Breath was written in a year and recorded over a few intense weeks. One Breath is a more personal record than its predecessor. Reflective and vulnerable, it strikes a balance between optimism and despair, beauty and ugliness. The fiery elements of Anna’s debut remain, but One Breath is more instinctive and urgent, revealing a wider spectrum of textures and emotion.

Following standout performances at Isle Of Wight, Glastonbury, Latitude and Green Man, Anna Calvi has been invited to support Morrissey for a string of his UK and European dates, including a show at the O2 Arena in London on Saturday 29th November. Full dates with ticket links are as follows:

KING CREOSOTE SHARES VIDEO FOR SOMETHING TO BELIEVE IN PLUS UNION CHAPEL DATE

King Creosote | 20/08/14

Image: King Creosote 2

Something To Believe In will be released as the new single from King Creosote on 20th October 2014. The track is the elegiac album opener from From Scotland With Love, which critics described as ‘a lovingly crafted thing’ (Independent on Sunday), ‘consistently superb’ (Loud & Quiet – 9/10) and ‘a beautiful thing, flitting between affecting, inspiring, amusing and enchanting’ (Time Out – 4* lead review).

King Creosote can also announce a show at London’s Union Chapel on 3rd February 2015. Kenny will be accompanied by a six-piece band for what promises to be a very special night. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased HERE. Both the matinee and evening shows on Saturday 27th September at London’s Barbican venue, Milton Court, are now sold out.

From Scotland With Love was created in collaboration with director Virginia Heath and Producer Grant Keir as an audio-accompaniment to a poetic documentary film of the same name, which was commissioned for the Commonwealth Games. Featuring archive footage but no narration or interview, the film works around themes of love and loss, war, resistance, emigration, work and play, and is driven as much by the music as it is the images. For the first time King Creosote found himself being able to write from other people’s perspectives. The result is From Scotland With Love, one of King Creosote’s most widescreen cinematic and finest pieces of work to date. From Scotland With Love is available now through Dom Mart, and iTunes, with an extended version available HERE.

AUSTRA SHARE VIDEO FOR 'DOEPFER'; 'HABITAT' EP OUT NOW

Austra | 06/08/14

Image: austra habitat

Following on from videos for EP tracks ‘Habitat’ and ‘Hulluu’, Austra are pleased to share a video for ‘Doepfer’. Directed by Adrienne Crossman and filmed in various locations around Toronto, the ‘Doepfer’ video premiered with THUMP today and can be viewed here.

Made up of footage taken in Toronto and Berlin, the video for Austra’s Doepfer acts as a disruptive visual meditation on the third released track from their Habitat EP. Accompanying the percussive-heavy dark synth soundtrack, the visual landscape of the video is made up of eerie footage of dark hallways, a dead mouse, silhouetted figures and mysterious textured surfaces, including a pixelated close up of billowing tin foil. As the music intensifies so do the visuals, with an increased frequency of anamorphic glitched disruption. Shot, edited and co-directed (with drummer Maya Postepski) by Adrienne Crossman, the video for Doepfer is a glance into the distorted intricacies of the band’s increasingly experimental musical nature.

Toronto-based Austra’s Habitat, a four-track EP, is out now on Domino. Order the limited-edition hand-numbered 12” here from Austra or download from iTunes.

FRANZ FERDINAND SHARE VIDEO FOR STAND ON THE HORIZON

Franz Ferdinand | 04/08/14

Image: Stand On The Horizon

Franz Ferdinand have revealed the new video to their new single, Stand On The Horizon , which is released through Domino.

Directed by Karan Kandhari , the director of the award winning film Bye Bye Miss Goodnight and more recently The Vaccines Melody Calling video, the stunningly shot video is based around a live performance in an old-fashioned club. Kandhari said of the video:

An awkward look at innocence and experience.  An attempt to capture a sparkle in the melancholy and a warmth in the strangeness.  I hope people find it both sad and funny / hopeful and human.  We either achieved all of this, or totally failed and ended up with an alternative universe version of Franz Ferdinand.

Taken from their much acclaimed fourth album, Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action, the song is inspired by Alex’s time in Sunderland as a child, mentioning both the local Marsden Rock and South Shields Metro station.

This summer has already seen the band play a rapturous show at T in the Park, perform as part of this year’s Somerset House series in London and headline Fuji Rock in Japan. Currently playing festivals across Europe, the band head to South America for a run of shows in September.

Eugene McGuinness | 24/07/14

Image: EUGENE ANNOUNCE 2

Eugene McGuinness has announced details of the release of a new single. The Crueler Kind will be released on Domino Records on Monday September 15th 2014.

The single is taken from his recent album, Chroma, which was released in July.

Recorded and produced by Dan Carey at his South London studio as part of the album sessions, the single features arguably one of the best rhythm sections in the UK, Tom and Leo from The Invisible.

Chroma, his Eugene’s album, following his self-titled debut in 2008, Glue (2009) and The Invitation To The Voyage (2012) treads a much more Spontaneous, stripped-back and raw path, perfectly showcasing his songwriting talent.

Blood Orange | 09/07/14

Image: Blood Orange High Street

Devonté Hynes – aka Blood Orange – released his sophomore album Cupid Deluxe to critical acclaim last year. Today, he releases a new music video for Cupid Deluxe's grime-inspired track, "High Street" featuring British rapper, Skepta. Click HERE to watch the video exclusively via ssense.com.

Subsequent to the release of Cupid Deluxe, Hynes has quickly established himself as one of the most prolific musicians, songwriters, and producers in contemporary music: Cupid Deluxe earned recognition from both NPR Music and Pitchfork in their Top 50 Albums of the Year compilations. Known as "2014's answer to Lou Reed" according to GQ, 2014 has undoubtedly been the year of Devonté Hynes.

Blood Orange's partnership with SSENSE is part of the international online retailer's series of bi-weekly music-based videos, a project that has seen collaborations between established artists and creatives from every corner of the industry. So far, SSENSE has premiered videos for artists like Sky Ferreira, Hercules & Love Affair, and Henry Krinkle. In their most recent release, Maryam L'Ange directed Chloë Sevigny in a noir-inspired fashion film featuring music by electronica three-piece, Eaux. Every video allows viewers to shop the fashion featured on screen, while Blood Orange and Skepta's "High Street" offers an exclusive preview of the upcoming Fall season.

WHITE LUNG SHARE NEW VIDEO FOR IN YOUR HOME

White Lung | 08/07/14

Image: White Lung In Your Home video still

Fresh from touring Australia and New Zealand, White Lung are poised to release new single ‘In Your Home’ on August 25th before tearing up North America with a string of live dates once again. Mish Way explains the video:

“This video was created by Justin Gradin and Ben Jacques. Justin has done all our album art since our first LP so ‘In Your Home’ is funny, demented and uncomfortable, it's perfect. The star of the video is my dear friend Christina Kenton who pushes the baby cart and smiles at the end. She's an incredible artist herself. This video is filled with people way more talented than the four of us.”

Watch the new video for ‘In Your Home’ below.

Deep Fantasy is their third full length and proves White Lung to be every bit as confrontational as before, but it appears that Vancouver’s hard hitting rock n’ roll outfit have opened their sound up just enough to draw listeners in:

“I wanted it to sound more like a rock record than a punk record. I didn't want to lose any of the speed and aggression that we have, but I wanted more melodies,” says Way, “But it's still a really hard record.”

Way is more provocative and melodic than ever on Deep Fantasy, lyrically surveying addiction (“Drown With the Monster”), body dysmorphia (“Snake Jaw”) and sexual dynamics (“Down It Goes,”) amongst other dinner table topics.  Guitarist Kenneth William, a devotee of Johnny Marr “plays with the speed of an 80s hardcore dude” whirled in Anne-Marie Vassiliou’s relentless and seemingly effortless approach to drumming.

Mish compiled a playlist: ‘Songs That Inspired Deep Fantasy’, listen  HERE

AUSTRA SHARE NEW VIDEO FOR HULLUU

Austra | 03/07/14

Image: Austra Hul

Toronto-based Austra have shared a video for Hulluu, directed by Zeesy Powers and featuring choreography and dancing from Emily Law

Hulluu is the last track on Habitat, a brand-new four-track EP which is out now. Order the limited-edition hand-numbered 12" here from Austra or download from iTunes

Katie Stelmanis from Austra said the following about the video:

I knew that I wanted the video for Hulluu to focus on movement. I've known Emily since I was 12 and she is the best dancer/waacker in Toronto so I definitely wanted her to be a part of it. Zeesy is a super-talented artist who I used to live with and collaborate with all the time making soundtracks for her performance art pieces (and who was actually the one to encourage me to start performing my own music in the first place). I thought it would be cool to work together again. We used a green screen and filmed Emily dancing to the track for about 4 hours.

In director Powers' words: "The spirit self is unleashed in the nightclub in your mind. The beat hits and time stops, speeds up, slows down. On the dance floor do you compete with others or only yourself? True freedom fills the body with what we have been, are, and could be. Shedding psychic bodies reveals the person always there. Move."

The band recently completed US west coast dates with Chvrches after having performed at Coachella and Sasquatch and have upcoming festivals in Canada and Europe including a show at Oval Space in London on 10th July. The band has also announced North American dates supporting Broken Bells. Full dates are below.

“'Habitat' is an old song that we've waited almost three years to release," says the band's Katie Stelmanis. "It didn't seem to fit with the sounds of Feel it Break or Olympia, so we decided to finally put it out as a single along with 3 new instrumental tracks. There's a lot of live versions of the song online but people have always pressed us to make a proper recording, so we are especially excited to announce these limited-edition physical copies of the EP. It’s a euro-style computer music experiment produced with love from me, Maya, and Dorian."

The new single from Francois & The Atlas Mountains will be ‘The Way To The Forest’. Out now, the track will be accompanied by remixes by Petite Noir and Ibibio Sound Machine.

Petite Noir brings the spirit of the carnival to the track, adding samba influenced drums and adjusting the song’s synths and vocals to create something summery and uplifting. Listen to it HERE.

The single is also accompanied by the magical video directed by Elliot Dear and produced by the team at BlinkInk, who were the creative minds behind last year’s ‘The Bear & The Hare’ advert for John Lewis. Watch HERE.
