WATCH THE VIDEO FOR THE KILLS' 'HEART OF A DOG'

The Kills | 18/04/16

Image: Heart Of A Dig video still

The Kills have unveiled the second music video from their highly anticipated fifth album, Ash & Ice. Heart Of A Dog” premiered on the Coachella festival live stream immediately before the band’s blistering energetic performance on Friday evening. The video was directed by Sophie Muller who has worked with the band in the past (“U.R.A Fever,” “Cheap and Cheerful,” “Last Days of Magic” and “Satellite”). Ash & Ice will be released on June 3rd through Domino.

The band adds: We are very very especially pleased to release our new music video for “Heart of A Dog!” It was shot all day and into the night in Los Angeles by our dear friend, the tremendous talent, Sophie Muller. We love this video. We love it because it’s fucking fun. Muscle cars and backflips. Palms trees and cacti. Dogs and dice. Neon and sunshine. We hope you love it as much as we do. VROOM VROOM. Love, The Kills.

Over their almost decade-and-a-half career, The Kills have released four records. Each one a restless, reckless enigmatic art statement that bristled with tension, anxiety, sex, unstudied cool and winking ennui, yet not one of them sounded like the previous one. Ash & Ice is the follow up to 2011’s critically lauded Blood Pressures and was five years in the making.

The Kills’ forthcoming European run in May is now sold out.  The band will be returning in the autumn, for shows including London’s Roundhouse on the 7th of October  - general on-sale for the new dates is on Friday at 10am CET. All dates are listed below.

Your Friend | 15/04/16

Your Friend is currently wrapping up a tour with Porches and Alex G in support of her debut album, Gumption, out now on Domino.  Ahead of her last week on the road in the United States, The FADER has premiered a new video for title track, “Gumption,” directed by Dan Huiting.

On the video’s concept, Huiting explains, “When I first heard this song I immediately had two images come into my mind. One was person trudging through the snow from overhead, and second was an overhead shot of that person stopping in front of a burning car. There's something about fire that is so mesmerizing to me.”

Taryn Miller aka Your Friend elaborates on the making of the “Gumption” video, “"I feel really fortunate to have worked with Dan. I've been a fan of his work for a long time. It was wild getting to see the fire footage after the fact since I was facedown in the ice for those shots. It was painfully cold but I would get hit with this wave of heat as the flames grew and it felt amazing in this strange way. In that, I couldn't see but only experience it physically."

QUASI TO REISSUE R&B TRANSMOGRIFICAITON, FEATURING "BIRDS" AND FIELD STUDIES ON JUNE 10TH

Quasi | 14/04/16

Image: Quasi Bundle

Domino are proud to reissue Quasi’s first three studio albums, 1997’s R&B Transmogrification, 1998’s Featuring “Birds” and 1999’s Field Studies on June 10th.

Stream R&B Transmogrification’s ‘Ballad of Mechanical Man’, Featuring “Birds”’s ‘The Poisoned Well’ and Field Studies ‘Birds’ here.

Some bands – not every band – hit a hot streak. A year or two, or three, where they can’t do wrong for doing right; where every song suggests another two; where all the mistakes are in tune and in time, and the bandmembers are finishing each other’s riffs and fills. Talking Heads, 1978–80. The Fall, 1979–82. Sonic Youth, 1986–88. Wu-Tang, 1994–97.

Quasi, 1997-1999: R&B Transmogrification, Featuring “Birds”, Field Studies.

Indie rock had seen power duos before: Guv’ner, Royal Trux, Buckingham-Nicks, the Carpenters – but they’d never sounded like Quasi. Drumming like a controlled detonation; mutant blues coming out of an electric harpsichord or guitar by turns. Backwards through the backwoods of AM pop and Pebbles psych to create a new form: bar-room baroque. Honey-golden multitracked vocals and some of the bleakest, black-eyed, black-hearted lyrics put to paper since Lou Reed woke up in a bad mood. And all played with the kind of ramshackle ease that only comes from weeks of practice, months in the van, and serious chops.

Janet Weiss and Sam Coomes first collaborated in 1990 as Motorgoat, but by 1993 they had become Quasi. These initial excursions would later be re-released as Early Recordings, but 1997’s R&B Transmogrification is where they define their double act. On drums and harmonies, Weiss is all low-key Bonham-ie, power with poise. On top Coomes’ Roxichord makes you wonder how the electronic harpsichord never took off, its low-end crunch with top notes sounding like Ray Manzarek with a Superfuzz. A treacherous lyrical undertow is always there, catching you as you sing along to sweet pop hooks about death, hopelessness – or the illusions of the atomic family on ‘Mama, Papa, Baby’: “One plus one plus one is nothing.” Yet musically Coomes and Weiss are always greater than the sum of their parts. They just fit together, like a two-piece jigsaw puzzle. You float out of R&B Transmogrification on the dislocated cosmic guitars of ‘Clouds’, a little transmogrified yourself.

From Weiss’s opening salvo, and the first action-painting splatter of Coomes’ keyboard on ‘Our Happiness is Guaranteed’, Featuring “Birds” is Quasi at their peak, melding jams-kicking rock’n’roll, punk action, and chord shifts that feel like the change of a season. The success of Weiss’s other group, Sleater-Kinney, in the meantime was clearly only firing up, rather than undercutting Quasi. The songs slide from science fictional dystopia on ‘Our Happiness is Guaranteed’ and ‘I Never Want to See You Again’, to wage-slave class war on ‘The Happy Prole’ and ‘Sea Shanty’. As for ‘It’s Hard to Turn Me On’ and ‘California’, how can songs about anhedonia, the inability to experience pleasure, feel so good? Mixing uppers and downers isn’t usually advised, but Weiss and Coomes use it to make a musical space that feels unique to Quasi.

Closing in on the millennium, both feet on the pedals, Field Studies arrives in 1999. Organ edges out the Roxichord, making for a sound less jagged and more floating – like the protagonist of ‘The Star You Left Behind’, drifting out into an infinite void.  Does Field Studies have an Elliott Smith turn to the harmonies? They do share that heady hit of sweet-sour power-pop – or maybe both Quasi and Smith have a Heatmiser influence, given that’s the Portland band that Coomes and Smith had played in together. As one of their biggest fans, ‘Clouds’ was one of Smith’s favourite live covers. And Smith plays bass on three of Field Studies’ tracks, returning the favour for the many live shows in which Weiss and Coomes were his backing group. “I live underground on the dark side of town”, sings Coomes, but Field Studies is brilliantly lit with tunes that positively glow, and if the settings and arrangements are little more orderly than Featuring “Birds”, it’s only to heighten those accents.

The rest is history: Sword of God, Hot Shit!, When the Going Gets Dark, American Gong, and, most recently in 2013, Mole City, the late-arriving Tusk of the American indie tradition, four sprawling sides of old joys and new directions. Don’t stop; never stop. “You won’t live long / but you may write the perfect song” sings Coomes on ‘The Poisoned Well’. Quasi wrote more than a few, so if you don’t know these three albums, come on in: your happiness is guaranteed.

These three seminal albums will be reissued on vinyl and CD plus will be available on all digital formats. All three albums are available packaged together exclusively through Domino Mart.

WHITE LUNG SHARE NEW SONG 'KISS ME WHEN I BLEED'

29/03/16

Image: White Lung

Fresh off of a victorious SXSW, White Lung release another stellar track off their upcoming fourth studio album Paradise, due out May 6th on Domino. Front woman Mish Barber-Way explains “’Kiss Me When I Bleed is about pride. That kind of steadfast, I-don't-give-a-fuck-I'm-in-love pride in that we all wish we had for someone. This song is my fairytale. Riches to rags and happily ever after because nothing else in this world really matters except love."

Listen to 'Kiss Me When I Bleed' here

Surprisingly, the track features no synthesizers – it’s all Kenny William’s guitar. He has reworked and re-pitched his parts resulting in what Annie Clark (St. Vincent) compares to evil mosquitoes - a bit off and unsettling.

This second cut, follows on from 'Hungry', which received 'Best New Track' from Pitchfork, who said "propelled by ringing guitars and Way's piercing vocals, the track is a tightly-wound, catchy-as-fuck invective played at a polished, breakneck velocity." Also, noting the band is "ostensibly teetering on the edge of a major breakthrough."

White Lung will tour extensively throughout Europe and North America this summer. Full list of tour dates below.

For the making of Paradise, vocalist Mish Barber-Way, guitarist Kenneth William and drummer Anne-Marie Vassiliou reconnected in Los Angeles to work with producer Lars Stalfors (HEALTH, Alice Glass). In October of 2015, White Lung spent a month in the studio, working closely with Stalfors to challenge what could be done with their songs. Bringing all the energy, unique guitar work and lyrical prowess the band are known for to the studio, White Lung curated their songs with a new pop sensibility, focusing in on making a record for the present - "I wanted a record that sounded like it was made in 2016", said William. Mixed by Stalfors and later mastered by Joe LaPorta, Paradise is their smartest, brightest songwriting yet.

Mish Barber-Way and Kenneth William sat down with Annie Clark aka St. Vincent to discuss the making of the album and their creative process. The entire conversation can be read here.

THE RANGE SHARES 'COPPER WIRE', TAKEN FROM NEW ALBUM POTENTIAL

The Range | 22/03/16

Image: Photo credit Alexandra Gavillet

James Hinton’s The Range has shared the latest cut from forthcoming new album Potential, out March 25th on Domino, in the form of ‘Copper Wire’. Listen to it now below.

Hinton says of ‘Copper Wire’, which features vocals from a young London rapper called Kruddy Zak:

“I think a lot of my favorite lyrics on Potential allude to coming to terms with a difficult time in your life - that moment of acceptance when you finally allow yourself to drop your guard and admit you’ve been hit with something hard. Zak's verse has a piece in it that states '09 was emotional / it's a memory / I wish that everything was still the same' and that hit me particularly deeply as that was the year I lost my mom. Writing this song was the first time I ever talked about that moment in my music, and I think it was an important step in dealing with how I was feeling to finally get some words about it down on paper.”

Additionally, the track ‘1804’ featuring Jamaican rapper Naturaliss will be premiering tonight on Sun City Radio in Jamaica at 8:30pm Eastern Standard Time / 9:30pm Eastern Daylight Time.

As its backbone, the album Potential utilizes a series of vocal samples that Hinton found in the deep corners of YouTube. The new single, “Five Four”, finds Hinton exploring his love of early ’00s grime and mid ‘00s electronica while bringing it to a new sonic and emotional whole.  The music video, directed by Daniel Kaufman, features the London, UK-based grime MCs Ophqi and Superior Thought, the musicians from the original YouTube sourced clip that Hinton used to write and produce “Five Four.”

In addition to the forthcoming album Potential, a documentary titled Superimpose, directed by Daniel Kaufman, out this spring, will look at the human stories behind Ophqi, Superior Thought, and the other unknown artists included on the album. As Hinton states, “I am very conscious that these people who I have sampled elevate what I do, just as much as my record brings their work somewhere else.”

THE KILLS ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM ASH & ICE, TO BE RELEASED 3RD JUNE

The Kills | 01/03/16

Image: The Kills launch shot

The Kills have unveiled details of their highly anticipated fifth album. Entitled Ash & Ice, the album will be released on June 3rd through Domino. Accompanying today’s announcement is the video for brand new single ‘Doing It To Death’, directed by Wendy Morgan (Janelle Monae, Laura Mvula) and shot in Los Angeles last month.

Over their almost decade-and-a-half career, The Kills have released four records. Each one a restless, reckless enigmatic art statement that bristled with tension, anxiety, sex, unstudied cool and winking ennui, yet not one of them sounded like the previous one. Ash & Ice is the follow up to 2011’s critically lauded Blood Pressures and was five years in the making in part due to Jamie Hince’s five hand surgeries, which resulted in him having to re-learn how to play guitar with a permanently damaged finger.

Unlike earlier albums, which have largely been written and recorded at Key Club Studio in Benton Harbor, Michigan, the bulk of the recording for Ash & Ice took place in a rented house in LA and at the world famous Electric Lady Studios in NYC. The album was produced by Jamie Hince and co-produced by John O’Mahony (Metric & The Cribs), and mixed by Tom Elmhirst (Adele, Arcade Fire, Amy Winehouse) and Tchad Blake (Black Keys, Arctic Monkeys).

It was during Hince’s recuperation from surgery that he first started sketching out what would become the songs for the album. To shake up the writing process, Hince booked a solo trip on the infamous Trans-Siberian Express for inspiration while Alison Mosshart, now residing in Nashville, TN, wrote some of the most affecting, poetically candid lyrics that she ever has, painting word pictures that mine the dangerous terrain between romantic obsession, prophecy and tough love. Where previous albums had an air of detachment and emotional austerity, underpinned by an uneasy self-awareness and unexpressed anger, the 13 songs on Ash & Ice are more understated, less tempestuous and more affecting because of that, exposing the kind of push-pull you feel when you find yourself in a complicated but all-consuming relationship. Ash & Ice is The Kills at their emotionally charged, arresting best. Prepare to be slayed.

The album details come with additional tour dates, including dates in DC, Boston, Detroit, Chicago and San Francisco. All dates are listed below, and new shows go on sale this coming Friday, March 4.

THE RANGE SHARES 'FIVE FOUR' VIDEO, NEW ALBUM POTENTIAL RELEASED 25TH MARCH

The Range | 29/02/16

Image: The Range press photo

Following the release of the first single “Florida” from his forthcoming album Potential, Brooklyn, NY-based musician The Range (AKA James Hinton), has shared the second single, “Five Four”, with an accompanying video. Watch it below now.

The music video, directed by Daniel Kaufman, features the London, UK-based grime MCs Ophqi and Super Thought, the musicians from the original YouTube sourced clip that Hinton used to write and produce “Five Four.”

Hinton had the following to say about the inspiration behind the song, and how it incorporates Ophqi and Superior Thought’s lyrics:

“Five Four is about the frustration of not being able to change the circumstances of a situation.

I think ST captures it well - “Scarred from the hard tasks and dreams that never came to pass … And yet he tried to walk the straight and narrow path but he fiend for the lights and the drama need an arsenal and an armor to inflict the force and cause trauma.”

In addition to the forthcoming album Potential, a documentary titled Superimpose, directed by Daniel Kaufman, out this spring, will look at the human stories behind Ophqi, Super Thought, and the other unknown artists included on the album. As Hinton states, “I am very conscious that these people who I have sampled elevate what I do, just as much as my record brings their work somewhere else.”

In addition to recently being announced on the lineups of Osheaga Festival, Pitchfork Music Festival, and FORM Arcosanti, The Range will be playing a handful of pre-release shows this month in Los Angeles, New York City, London and Austin for SXSW. More dates to be announced soon.

WHITE LUNG ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM PARADISE OUT MAY 6TH, SHARE VIDEO FOR NEW SINGLE ‘HUNGRY’

White Lung | 24/02/16

Image: White Lung

After the critically acclaimed release Deep Fantasy (2014), White Lung return with their fourth studio album Paradise, due out May 6, 2016 on Domino. Coming in at a succinct yet powerful 28 minutes, the album simmers with desire and pain, love and beauty, and a seething urgency, hurtling towards the album closer and title track Paradise at signature breakneck speed.

In addition to today’s album announcement, White Lung are pleased to share the video for first single ‘Hungry’, which was scripted by Mish Barber-Way and Justin Gradin, directed by Gradin, and stars Amber Tamblyn (Sisterhood Of The Travelling Pants, The Ring, 127 Hours, House).

Says Gradin on the video:

“’Hungry’ plays with identity and perception, and the idea that sometimes public attention can create more isolation and delusion. The video focuses on a self-obsessed girl (who is barely famous as the model on a brand of canned condensed milk) as she struggles to seem important while being haunted by the ghosts of fame until her eventual epiphany of disposability."

For the making of Paradise, vocalist Mish Barber-Way, guitarist Kenneth William and drummer Anne-Marie Vassiliou reconnected in Los Angeles to work with producer Lars Stalfors (HEALTH, Cold War Kids, Alice Glass). In October of 2015, White Lung spent a month in the studio, working closely with Stalfors to challenge what could be done with their songs. Bringing all the energy, unique guitar work and lyrical prowess the band are known for to the studio, White Lung curated their songs with a new pop sensibility, focusing in on making a record for the present - “I wanted a record that sounded like it was made in 2016”, said William.

“There’s this really stupid attitude that only punks have where it’s somehow uncool to become a better songwriter. In no other musical genre are your fans going to drop you when you start progressing. That would be like parents being disappointed in their child for graduating from kindergarten to the first grade. Paradise is the best songwriting we have ever done, and I expect the next record to be the same. I have no interest in staying in kindergarten.”Mish Barber-Way, in conversation with Annie Clark.

GEORGIA SHARES VIDEO FOR NEW SINGLE 'HEART WRECKING ANIMALS'

22/02/16

Image: Georgia Heart Wrecking Animals video still

Georgia has today shared the brand new video for ‘Heart Wrecking Animals’, one of the stand out tracks to be taken from her eponymous debut album, which is out now. The video was directed by award-winning London based artist, Kate Moross (Disclosure, Jessie Ware, Wild Beasts). Watch it now below.

Inspired by the spacious ambience and sporadic bursts of colourful chaos of an Oneohtrix Point Never concert she attended, ‘Heart Wrecking Animals’ sees Georgia wearing her heart on her sleeve, delivering an emotively raw-edged love song. Georgia’s performance here equally showcases her unfeigned emotion.

On the video, Georgia says, “This song means a lot to me and it seemed that Kate got inside the emotions of the song and her vision for it feels so right. ‘Heart Wrecking Animals’ marked a certain part of my life and helped shape my debut album. It feels like a good time to share this with you all.”

HIGHER AUTHORITIES ANNOUNCE DEBUT ALBUM NEPTUNE OUT 20TH APRIL 2016, SHARE NEW SONG 'COLOUR'

Higher Authorities | 10/02/16

Image: Higher Authorities press photo

Shadowy, psychedelic adventurers, Higher Authorities, are happy to announce their forthcoming debut album, Neptune, for 20th April 2016.

Listen to debut track, ‘Colour’, below now.

Neptune, a collection of warped psychedelic dub and electronic explorations will be available on CD & digitally on 20th April 2016. The release date – 4/20, a day of huge significance in cannabis culture – is no coincidence. Neptune is proper head music, an old-fashioned headphones album where the devil is in the lo-fi details.

Produced by the Higher Authorities, the album was augmented by legendary dub producer Adrian Sherwood, who brought his mad box of sound effects to proceedings.

For Higher Authorities, visual identity is important. There is symbolism at work here, the pineapples on the album artwork possibly refer to Liverpool's wealthy merchant's houses who had pineapples on the gateposts. One of the pineapples is smoking, it all ties in.

‘Colour’ is the first single the duo has shared from the album, and the first window into their cosmic world.

FLYING SAUCER ATTACK RE-ISSUE DISTANCE, FURTHER AND CHORUS

Flying Saucer Attack | 03/02/16

Image: FSA

Following last year’s re-emergence with Instrumentals 2015, three of Flying Saucer Attack’s most revered albums - Distance, Further and Chorus – are to be re-issued on Domino on March 18th 2016.

Stream Distance’s ‘Ocean’, Further’s ‘In The Light of Time’ and Chorus’ ‘Feedback Song’ via fsa.space now HERE.

David Pearce re-materialised last year with the beautiful Instrumentals 2015 and attracted all manner of attention - as one does when one emerges from self-imposed exile holding a glittering prize. Without warning he became part of the musical landscape once again, heralding a new phase of the project he initiated in the early 1990s. Interviews and retrospective features assessed his importance in the continually unfolding story of British music, referring back to the music contained within these three artifacts, which sound as untainted - even more so, in fact - as they did on their initial release.

There are many that believe the concept of electric folk to have died at some point in the 1970s following the heyday of bands and artists such as Fairport Convention, Roy Harper and John Martyn. These three reissues give the lie to that commonly held misconception. For while Distance, Further and Chorus do not cleave all that faithfully to the folk rock template established by the electrified rovers of that supposed golden age, and incorporate elements absorbed from musics as varied as krautrock, drone and dub, they can be considered in that lineage, with its Arcadian attitude to the unsullied landscapes of Britain and romanticised idea that old traditions may, at some point, produce something fresh and unheard.

All three are essential listening for those who are still capable of dreaming even as our dreams are co-opted and second guessed in a digital era which is revealing itself to be monstrously voracious and venal. Distance, Further and Chorus open up spaces in the mind where one may wander at will, Pearce’s excoriating feedback serving as a dream weapon designed to cleanse the grit from the mind’s eye. The melodies beyond the noise reassure us that it’s okay to take this route away from the superhighway and explore paths trodden only by a few, Pearce and collaborators included. This may be derided by some as escapism; rather it is parallelism. The search for alternatives, when the very term ‘alternative’ has been devalued beyond all recognition.

Each of the three albums come in a 20th Anniversary Vinyl Repress format, cut in 180gm heavyweight virgin vinyl from original masters by Matt Colton at Alchemy. The albums will also be available on CD & digital formats.

All three albums are available packaged together exclusively through Domino Mart. Purchases through Domino Mart are also eligible to win test pressings of Instrumentals 2015, of which there are two pairs to win.

PORCHES SHARES NEW SONG 'CAR', NEW ALBUM POOL OUT FRIDAY FEBRUARY 5TH

Porches | 01/02/16

Image: Porches - photo credit Jessica Lehrman

Porches’ new album Pool is out via Domino this Friday, February 5th. Ahead of its release, listen to the album’s latest track ‘Car’ below. It follows the singles ‘Hour’ (watch the video HERE) and ‘Be Apart’ (watch the video HERE).

Says Maine on ‘Car’:

“’Car’ is about leaving a place where you're unhappy and the beauty of arriving somewhere where you feel good.  Whether you escape physically or mentally it's just about using your facilities to take control of your situation. Positive mental attitude.”

Pool, Porches’ (aka Aaron Maine) debut full-length for Domino, and a major step forward for Maine —as an evolving singer/songwriter, and as a nascent producer. Written and recorded almost entirely in his Manhattan apartment, and mixed by Chris Coady (Beach House, Grizzly Bear, Tobias Jesso Jr) in Los Angeles, Pool was influenced, in part, by settling in the city as an artist and a person. Says Maine, “there was something special about recording this album in my new home. To be surrounded by the city and in my own world at the same time. I quickly became obsessed with the energy around me, and my experience of New York - I was forced to see my music in an entirely different context.  This was challenging, but also exciting, when the songs started to sound like a true reflection of what I was feeling in my new surroundings."

Pool is available to pre-order now on limited pressing clear vinyl, CD, and digital download.

Pre-order: Dom Mart / Bandcamp / iTunes

BONNIE ‘PRINCE’ BILLY SHARES NEW VIDEO FOR ‘WHEN THY SONG FLOWS THROUGH ME’, NEW ALBUM POND SCUM RELEASED TODAY

22/01/16

Image: Bonnie 'Prince' Billy Pond Scum photo

Pond Scum is an integral piece in the evolution of Bonnie 'Prince' Billy's progressive and prolific catalogue. A collection of sessions recorded for John Peel’s influential BBC show, it spans eight years of Bonnie's career and is essential for longtime fans and first-time listeners alike. Released today, Pond Scum captures Will Oldham’s powerful and compelling songwriting, accompanied only by a single guitar and a few subtle, yet captivating harmonies.

Recorded in 2001, ‘When Thy Song Flows Through Me’ is one of the finest paradigms of Bonnie 'Prince' Billy's illustrious career. Inspired by the devotional chant by Paramahansa Yogananda, the Pond Scum version is every bit as spiritual and moving as the original. To accompany such a poignant adaptation, Bonnie enlisted the help of Louisville based director Ryan Daly to construct moving images that soothe the mind and body. Partly inspirited by the works of Nathaniel Dorsky and Jerome Hiler, the video for ‘When Thy Song Flows Through Me’ is dazzling in its simplicity.

Watch ‘When Thy Song Flows Through Me’ here.

Additionally, Oldham shared another Pond Scum cut via NPR last week, a cover of Prince’s ‘The Cross’. Listen to it here.

Pond Scum is available on CD (WIGCD374), vinyl (WIGLP374) and digitally (WIG374D).  You can purchase Pond Scum via Dom Mart or iTunes.

THE RANGE ANNOUNCES NEW ALBUM POTENTIAL RELEASED 25TH MARCH, LISTEN TO "FLORIDA" AND WATCH ALBUM TRAILER

The Range | 20/01/16

Image: The Range photo by Alexandra Gavillet

We're happy to announce the Domino debut Potential from Brooklyn, NY-based musician James Hinton, aka The Range, out March 25, 2016.

The magic of Potential, following 2013’s Nonfiction - is as a document of its time. The Range has made an electronic record inspired by Baltimore club, early ‘00s grime and mid ‘00s electronica, but also as a member of the last generation that will remember going online for the first time. Listen to lead single “Florida” below.

As its backbone, Potential utilizes a series of vocal samples that Hinton found in the deep corners of YouTube, introducing us to unknown artists expressing themselves unfettered by the constraints of industry. He might be fascinated by the code that determines his YouTube searches, but what truly grips him are the human stories behind the samples. Hinton explains, “I found each person by using a small set of search terms on YouTube. Each song is inextricably linked to the point in time that I came across each video. I endeavored to tie the songs of Potential together by telling my own story alongside the stories of the people I sampled. Every song tries to acknowledge a sense of vulnerability or difficulty in life, as well as an intense drive to cope with problems in ways that don't drag you into the abyss.”

In addition to the forthcoming album Potential, a documentary titled Superimpose, directed by Daniel Kaufman, out this spring, will look at the human stories behind the unknown artists included on the album. As Hinton states, “I am very conscious that these people who I have sampled elevate what I do, just as much as my record brings their work somewhere else.” Watch the documentary trailer below.

Potential will be available in CD, LP, deluxe double LP edition, and digital formats. The deluxe double LP edition, pictured above, is available to pre-order exclusively from the Domino Mart and includes a bonus 4 track Strings 12” EP and instant download of “Florida.” It will be limited to 1000 copies worldwide.

NIGHT MOVES ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM PENNIED DAYS, SHARE VIDEO FOR NEW SINGLE 'DENISE, DON'T WANNA SEE YOU CRY'

Night Moves | 19/01/16

Image: Night Moves - photo credit Bryan Derballa

Minneapolis band Night Moves are pleased to announce their new album, Pennied Days, due for release on March 25, 2016 on Domino. The first single from the forthcoming album, ‘Denise, Don’t Wanna See You Cry’, is released today alongside a music video, directed by Anthony Sylvester (director of Shamir’s ‘In For The Kill’ and ‘On The Regular’ videos) and shot in upstate New York late last year. Watch the video below now.

Formed in 2009 in the Twin Cities, Night Moves is composed at its core of John Pelant and Micky Alfano. Friends since high school, their bond was solidified when Alfano lent Pelant his copy of George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass, a luminous classic of turn-the-page melancholy that echoes through Pennied Days. Over time, Pelant and Alfano broadened their scope to allow for a wide array of maverick influences, ranging from traditionalist heroes like Leon Russell and The Band to r’n’b originators Curtis Mayfield and Sly Stone to pre-punk experimentalists Suicide. (They also love Joe Walsh, like all free-thinking Americans.)

For Pennied Days, Pelant channeled both his disillusionment and his quiet resolve into a set of beautiful, melodic songs whose sunny surface obscures an inner darkness. Pennied Days might ultimately be as breezy and pleasurable as the records Pelant grew up loving, but that description belies the years of work the band put into making the album.

“A lot of the songs are about trying to find yourself and what your future will look like and who you are – life overall,” Pelant says now — a seemingly simple statement about the most complicated of personal journeys. After releasing their 2012 debut, Colored Emotions — and touring with the likes of Father John Misty, Lord Huron, Django Django, and Poliça — Pelant set about recording demos for the follow-up. Originally, he planned on making another record quickly — Pelant is compulsively creative, writing loads of hooky pop songs in short bursts. (The band has few hobbies outside of music, beyond “drinking, wasting time talking about life, girls, and partying.”). But sessions for Pennied Days stretched far longer than anticipated, with the music veering from Flaming Lips-influenced doomsday dirges to the folky, laidback material the band were known for, and so eventually producer John Agnello was introduced to help steer things back on course, resulting in a 9 song collection of future folk-rock, paisley-tinged guitar licks, and even a piano jam or two.

Pre-order Pennied Days via iTunes HERE, or via the Domino Mart HERE. The deluxe LP - limited to 500 copies worldwide and available via the Dom Mart - comes in a single jacket with a printed inner sleeve, and includes a limited edition 10 inch with three bonus tracks. YOUR FRIEND SHARES NEW SINGLE COME BACK FROM IT, DEBUT ALBUM GUMPTION OUT JANUARY 29TH

Your Friend | 14/01/16

Image: Your Friend - photo credit Crystal Lee Ferris

Taryn Miller, aka Your Friend, will release her debut album, Gumption, on January 29th via Domino. The second single from Gumption, “Come Back From It,” debuts today on Noisey with an accompanying video directed by Christophe Acker / Thatfilm and shot at the end of last year in Paris.

Says Miller, “We shot the footage on my last day in Paris, when I was there last November for Red Bull Music Academy, which was postponed following the awful events in November. It was freezing, and wild. He (the motorcycle driver) was weaving between highway traffic and at times, splitting the space between semis. It all came together at the very end of my trip, and was a really lovely way to leave after seeing what so many endured. There was this juxtaposition of the time that I arrived, and the night before I left. The streets were empty on my first day there, and it was exhilarating to be riding back into the city like that, and to have witnessed such resilience during such a dark time.”

“Come Back From It,” was composed of salvaged pieces of an almost entirely scrapped song during Gumption’s demoing process. The whirling, dark, drum loop (arguably the backbone) and the crackling drone were the only original pieces of audio from the demo. Producer Nicolas Vernhes encouraged that there was something about the lurching nature of those elements that was worth pursuing. Miller already had a sense of verses, but there wasn’t a “relief,” as Vernhes said, when referring to a chorus. Vernhes sat her in the control room of Rare Book Room in Brooklyn and played Lou Reed’s “Pale Blue Eyes,” with the both of them in silence, then said, “You have thirty minutes, go write a chorus.” After the structure was formed, Miller took on the task of creating several, separate loops for each chord in the entire song, and Vernhes collaging them and achieving an overall cinematic type of texture.

“Come Back From It” follows the album opener and first single, “Heathering,” a brooding track Miller had been working on long before entering the studio. The opening acoustic guitar sample was something that Vernhes had caught before she knew they were tracking. It was left as somewhat of a playful placeholder initially, but then ultimately became an endearing and important part of the opening.

Gumption deals with the dualities and nuances of human interaction, and questions how much we, as individuals, are responsible for in the ways we are perceived. It’s a record of courage, as its title suggests - of having the willingness to make necessary shifts, and to have a sense of self-awareness that ultimately leads to growth.

---

Gumption will be available on CD and standard LP via the Domino Mart. Pre-order the album from the Domino Mart HERE or iTunes HERE and receive an instant download of “Heathering.” The standard LP comes in a single jacket with a printed inner sleeve and is accompanied by a MP3 download card.

PORCHES SHARE VIDEO FOR NEW SINGLE 'BE APART', NEW ALBUM POOL RELEASED 5TH FEBRUARY

Porches | 06/01/16

Image: Porches - photo credit Jessica Lehrman

Porches’ new album Pool is out via Domino on February 5th, and ahead of its release, the band is pleased to share a video for its latest single, ‘Be Apart’. Premiered via Fader earlier today, ‘Be Apart’ can be viewed below now.

The video was directed by Daniel Brereton (Connan Mockasin, Django Django, Kindness, Metronomy) and was filmed outside London during a recent UK/EU tour.

Says Maine on ‘Be Apart’:

“’Be Apart’ is sort of about moving to New York City and wanting to belong. It's about nightlife, about being taken away, losing control, longing for acceptance, and letting go. I imagine the music video portraying some sort of cult or family living in a mansion. The cult/mansion represent both what you might long to be a part of and also the sentiment of longing to be elsewhere, a part of what is outside.”

This video comes off the back of the previously released ‘Hour’ (watch HERE), which features Maine's partner and frequent collaborator, Greta Kline a.k.a Frankie Cosmos.

Next month marks the much-anticipated release of Pool, Porches’ debut full-length for Domino and a major step forward for Maine —as an evolving singer/songwriter, and as a nascent producer.

Porches will be taking off on an extensive 2016 North American tour, starting March 9 in Washington, DC. The tour is a co-headline with label-mate Alex G, and will feature Your Friend, another fellow Domino artist, on support for all dates. Tickets to all shows are on sale now.

BONNIE 'PRINCE' BILLY TO RELEASE POND SCUM, A NEW COLLECTION OF JOHN PEEL SESSIONS, 22ND JANUARY

Bonnie 'Prince' Billy | 06/01/16

Image: Pond Scum

There are no Peel sessions anymore - that tradition was buried in the pyramids with John Peel himself upon the great man's passing. Of the thousands left in the wake, six are ascribed to Bonnie 'Prince' Billy - and of those six, three have been combined to form the deeply congruous experience of Pond Scum.

A span of eight years is covered, in reverse, and many chestnuts are rolled out, freed of former contexts with sparse arrangements. "(I Was Drunk at the) Pulpit" feels, ten years from inception, more vividly worn; "Death to Everyone" is loosed from its frame, the bones decoupled and spread out, giving the song a reflective air (as opposed the biting declamation of the original); "Arise, Therefore" adapts its metronomic base, the evangelic twist of its roots made palpable. With the centre of the performance in stark relief, the gnomic qualities of two "Get On Jolly" pieces are intensified. Further accenting the devoted spirit of this collection is the inclusion of Bonnie's take on Prince's "The Cross", as well as the previously-unreleased original "Beezle."

Bonnie's lone shadow casts over this lot, accompanied on the first four tracks by David Heumann, but otherwise playing solo through a set of original songs (and two covers) representing a decade of progress in the almost unbearably intimate-yet-unknowable manner that was so often the vibe of those strange and wondrous days.

Layers peel to reveal the subtle artistry and refinement contained within these sessions, so begin to dig deep into the vault on January 22nd, 2016! But wait, there's more! You can download a new arrangement of "Rich Wife Full of Happiness", (which is similar in tone, but not found on Pond Scum!)!

Listen to and download “Rich Wife Full Of Happiness” HERE

Pond Scum is available on CD (WIGCD374), vinyl (WIGLP374) and digitally (WIG374D).  You can purchase Pond Scum via Dom Mart or iTunes.

BILL RYDER-JONES SHARES VIDEO FOR NEW SINGLE WILD ROSES, NEW ALBUM WEST KIRBY COUNTY PRIMARY OUT NOW, FORTHCOMING HEADLINE DATES INCLUDE LONDON'S SCALA MARCH 3RD, TICKETS ON SALE NOW

Bill Ryder-Jones | 14/12/15

Image: Wild Roses video still

Bill Ryder-Jones has today shared a video for ‘Wild Roses’, the latest single taken from his highly acclaimed album, West Kirby County Primary.

The new video, again directed by James Slater, finds Ryder-Jones captaining a 5-a-side football team featuring his live band members against a team of local Evertonian heroes. Watch the video now below.

West Kirby County Primary, the third full-length album from multi-instrumentalist, producer and composer, Bill Ryder-Jones, is the follow-up to A Bad Wind Blows In My Heart and was written and recorded by Ryder-Jones in his childhood bedroom at his mother’s house in West Kirby before being filtered through Liverpool’s legendary Parr Street Studios. A classic band record, West Kirby County Primary features Bill playing a multitude of instruments including the electric guitar with his trademark prowess.

Mixed by James Ford, each of West Kirby County Primary’s ten tracks offers a sneaked glance into his private world; they eavesdrop on a set of encounters that go about “turning stories into beautiful truth” set to glorious molten melody that explodes like fireworks over water. It all adds up to a remarkable record by one of our most cherished musicians – a musical polymath as at ease on stage with the Manchester Camerata (where he performed ‘If…’ as part of the Manchester Literature Festival last Autumn) or on live guitar duties with Arctic Monkeys as he is on production duties with Hooton Tennis Club and The Wytches.

Bill Ryder-Jones supports the release of West Kirby County Primary and the new single with new live dates throughout 2016. The new dates include a run of UK headline dates in March, including London’s Scala on March 3rd. New European support dates with Mumford and Sons throughout May have also been announced. Tickets for all listed dates are on sale now, with UK dates highlighted in bold.
