THE KILLS

"We were physically ill, mentally ill. So...we just ran away to Mexico. We were just going to hide there for as long as we could. We had these visions of drinking mojitos on the beach. And when we got there... it was hurricane season." - Jamie Hince

The Kills make music that sounds like the stripped-to-the-bone nub of the crux of the sex and death and madness at the heart of the very best rock 'n' roll.

BONNIE PRINCE BILLY

Hearing Arise Therefore for the first time is akin to experiencing an organic carrot for the first time. One recognises immediately that the object being observed is a carrot, but somehow unlike the processed, sanitised and chemically-neutered carrots common on supermarket shelves. All this time, one realises, I have been accepting this poor substitute for a carrot while the real thing has been kept from me! At first there is something spooky about the carrot - might it actually be some crazy medieval hallucinogenic root, used by witches to brew demonic potions?

JUNIOR BOYS

Junior Boys manage to tease soul and longing out of their machines in a way that few have dared try. Jeremy's gently vulnerable vocal hooks glide over synthesizer melodies creating a sensuous, melancholic and very human sound. With influences as diverse as Hall & Oates, Japan and Timbaland they manage to distill the last twenty five years of electronic pop music into one potent potable.

QUASI

Quasi flings words and notes relentlessly, hurling music across the stage like grenades. It is explosive and electrifying. Quasi are consummate players who let go of the reins to let the wildness accumulate; who space out and make the music disintegrate, blur and tumble before it falls back into the groove. Quasi provide the unofficial soundtrack to our hopelessly hopeful lives. Rise up!

FOUR TET

Four Tet represents a high watermark in new forms of pioneering musical creativity. His recordings fine-tune the techniques of electronic music: sampling, sequencing, tweaking and injected them with an almost alchemical warmth. Disparate forms such as free jazz, hip hop, concrete tape research music and open string folk tunings are distilled into something that can only be described as sounding like Four Tet.

COUNT & SINDEN

The Count & Sinden fuse an instinctive mix of house, electro, garage, R'n'B, booty bass, and techno. Imagine speed switching the dial on your radio, where all the spellbinding shapes and sounds of the pirate stations come hurtling towards you at breakneck pace, and you'll get some idea of their alluring charms of two of dance music's foremost sonic experimentalists.

CLINIC

Clinic sound like The Beatles never happened, as if pop remained in permanent thrall to Joe Meek before jumping straight to Studio One dub. Or as if The Shangri-Las drifted into Crime. Because Clinic sound like no other band. As individual as Suicide or The Monks, as self-sufficient as The Residents, they describe a twilit place: the streets surrounding John Carpenter's Precinct 13, the disco on the inhabited side of the moon.

FRIDGE

Fridge are Sam Jeffers, Kieran Hebden and Adem Ilhan, childhood friends who have released several albums of head-rawk. Meanwhile, alongside this group, its workaholic members have also cooked up other projects; Kieran Hebden, as Four Tet, and Adem have both recorded extensively for the Domino.

KIERAN HEBDEN &
STEVE REID

Steve Reid made his recording debut in 1964, aged 19, playing on Martha and the Vandella's 'Dancing in the Street' while Kieran Hebden developed Four Tet's sample-based collage of jazz, folk and soul textures. NYC, with its garrulous give and take, its musical questions and answers is Kieran and Steve's best work yet. The only question it leaves the listener with at the close is: what's the next destination?

MOUSE ON MARS

If Mouse on Mars ever devised a manifesto, it must be this: music should be molten and moulded anew. Making records that are stylistically diverse affairs and adding pastoral tones to their blend of playfully processed pop and bleeding edge electronics.

A passport out of the artificial wonderland and proof it was impossible to guess where this mercurial unit is headed next.

ARCHIE BRONSON OUTFIT

Archie Bronson Outfit generate molten heat with their music full of deep riffs, spaced loops and their strange, dark, space disco. Their head-nodding spaced funk-not-funk pulse and rhythmic dexterity is a portal to some strange nocturnal location. This is real after dark music; a sonic testament for a new decade's dawn. Get your freak on.

WILD BEASTS

Wild Beasts make records that ring with the sound of earthly pleasures, thrillingly widescreen, open and in awe of life; equally intoxicated and disturbed by the possibilities of pleasure. The sound is both suggestive and abstract, capturing the fine art of feeling weird by shimmering in a twilight cadence. The sound captured is pure liquid energy.

FRANZ FERDINAND

Class and charm, exhilaration and ecstasy, wit and wonder: Franz Ferdinand are masters of modern pop music sound tracking the music of the night: to fling yourself around your room to as you psyche yourself for an evening of hedonism, for the dance-floor, flirtation, for your desolate heart-stop, for losing it and loving losing it, for the chemical surge in your bloodstream. It's for that lonely hour gently rocking yourself, waiting for dawn and it all to be even again.

MAX TUNDRA

There are more ideas crammed into one minute of Max Tundra's music than most bands manage in their whole careers. A tsunami of micro-melodies and sound-bytes; a triumph of splicing, dicing and editing. It's an intricate mosaic of sounds and styles; pop, rock, prog, disco, funk, techno, rap, metal and soul. . The attention to detail, and the sheer speed at which ideas whizz past you in the mix, will leave you stunned.

JUANA MOLINA

In a career dedicated to following a most inspired and inspirational muse, Juana has encouraged us to open our ears to her hypnotic music which can't help but beguile and where joyous 'pop' elements burrow into your brain, never to leave. Her ever shifting and polymorphous sense of groove and rhythms and played out on wood and cymbal and woven from electronic glitches.
